One could be forgiven for ignoring Obituary's new album Inked In Blood. After all, how different can one expect it to be, given that the band effectively stalled their sound in 1990 and seldom bothered adding anything new? In some ways they would be right, but Inked In Blood somewhat rejuvenates the Obituary sound.

I actually have good hope for this album. 2014 has been a great year for (most) old school death metal, hoping Obituary is another example.

Excellent peace, classic sound, classic singing style, classic Obituary, great DM ... maybe most ''calmest'' Florida DM vocalist, because seems to me he is more singing , less 100% growing and its easy to understand what he sings

Weak Cunt
Agree with what Bad English said, old school Obituary with cleaner vocals. Yet it doesn't take the aggression away from the songs.
Not mindblowingly great but still a good Obituary album.
As a fan that backed this album, I am fully satisfied.

Same here, the vocal is pretty weak and why is the guitar so low on the mix ? They could have done much more than this.

As someone who hasn't liked anything this band has put out since Cause Of Death, I'm pleasantly surprised with this. Very old-fashioned sounding, but manages to not bore me as most old-school worshiping death metal does and keeps me interested. Also, the riffs are glorious.

I'll likely get bored with it later but for now I'm satisfied.

Obituary can't rely on Tom Hardy's vocals anymore. He's not as potent as he used to be but that's old age for you I guess

However, my problem with this is that the riffs are so banal that I feel that they spent virtually no time constructing each song. Hell, I feel that almost anyone can churn out something similar to this if they're thrown onto a stage and simply told to 'play death metal'.

That being said, this is not a terrible album. Its just painstakingly average.

Wow! I'm surprised with the very high overall rating. It's not that good, but not that bad either. When at moments it reminds me why I fell in love with this band at the first place as it has that old school feeling, overall it sounds repetitive and uninspired. And I have to agree with the weak vocals, but that can only be attributed to age I guess. Also what's the deal with those song titles? they sound very amateur and childish.
I think 'Visions in My Head' and 'Violence" are the highlights of the album. I'll give it a few more spins but I don't think that my opinion will change much

This album feels like it's one mid-tempo old-school Obituary song on loop.

Decent album, but for me it's practically Obituary going through the motions. A few songs really stand out though, like 'centuries of torment' and ' deny you'.

Inked in Blood is saturated with punk influences and I am digging it. I can see why some wouldn't like it. If Obituary had not tried something different then might as well just listen to Slowly We Rot. If you are somebody that likes to keep their favourite bands in a box this may not be for you.

Punk influences? What? Besides the small amount of punk that is naturally incorporated in death metal, I hear absolutely no punk in this at all. Which is a shame.

Apart from the opener, track #6 and track#10, there is virtually no punk in this. But as Fear said, that's just because those songs are thrashier.

They just went back to their older sound, but god, this must be the least menacing and the most boring osdm I've listening to in a good while.

Sorry you can't recognize it. I can though. That's what makes music great! For example you may hear something different than I do and could point something out that I or anybody else may not have made the connection. When I say influences I don't mean its suddenly punk. I can hear it in the instruments and how they are being played. To much to discuss in a forum post so I will leave it at that. Cheers!

1) Check out the label behind an album
