@corrupt: OK, but you seem to think that one inevitably leads to the other. Local patriotism, patriotism, national identity, chauvinism, nationalism and fascism may have a common root, but IMO they are fundamentally different.
But I see similar things in art. People who say "I separate the art from the artist" abuse the Death of the Author concept as a cop-out to just do what they like without accepting what that means for other people.
I have a hard time in general with people who only choose to see one aspect of something. National pride tends to ignore a lot of history and responsibility to even be possible.
Some of my friends sit somewhere in the middle of patriotism and nationalism. Is extreme patriotism a thing? Personally aussie pride makes me sick and it gets rammed down your throat
