Drummer Mike Smith has reportedly parted ways with US death metallers Suffocation. He posted the following message on his website: "There are not many things related to the Suffocation brand I can honestly say brings me sadness. Except, the lack of pride that exists within those who have the 'right' to claim the name as their own. This battle has been one that to any focused being, should make obvious sense but has evaded some for 2 decades. Within any foundation the weakest link will always cause all structure to crumble."
New York death metal pioneers Suffocation have begun working on their new album, which they plan to release sometime next year through Nuclear Blast. Currently the band is writing new material for the follow-up to their most recent release, Blood Oath.

Suffocation have uploaded a video clip for the track "Cataclysmic Purification". The footage was directed by David Brodsky (Arsis, God Forbid, Kataklysm, Swashbuckle), with animation by Tim Kellen. When asked about the new track and their soon to be released 6th full-length album Blood Oath, Suffocation bassist Derek Boyer stated:
"Cataclysmic Purification" audibly portrays a calamitous future approaching. With this song and the rest of the album I think we've maintained the musical integrity of the band while still having comprehensible brutality. Blood Oath combines straight forward crushing movements with unsuspecting twists that will certainly entertain everyone from the avid Suffocation listener to the 1st time innocent bystanders."
