Dimmu Borgir - Premiere New Video And Song

After more than seven years of silence, symphonic black metallers Dimmu Borgir mark their return and unveil the first song of their new full-length album, Eonian, due to be released on May 4th via Nuclear Blast. This first track off the new record "Interdimensional Summit" comes with a music video shot by Patric Ullaeus, who had previously worked with the band for the clips of "Progenies of the Great Apocalypse", "Sorgens Kammer - Del II" and the award-winning "The Serpentine Offering". Was it worth the wait?

The song represents the "more epic side of a devilish and diverse album, which pays tribute to all eras of the band's 25-years-long history."

Tracklist:

01. The Unveiling
02. Interdimensional Summit
03. Ætheric
04. Council Of Wolves And Snakes
05. The Empyrean Phoenix
06. Lightbringer
07. I Am Sovereign

Bemused by people who think you gotta be a "trve kvlt pvrist" to not like this song. Of course! What's not to love about this masterpiece!? I mean, they gotta have a problem, right? Come on...

I don't really like this song either, the point is rather that it's the same story everytime there's news about Dimmu. I guess it comes with success, after all, people are still nagging about Megallica drama that happened 35 years ago.

It's an ok song. The production is a lot better especially since the guitars and drumming aren't drowned out by the symphonic elements however it's also a little boring.

I was hoping for a bit more considering it's been 8 years since their last album. Here's hoping it's at least an improvement over Abrahadrabra.

I understand what you're saying but that's not my case. In Sorte Diaboli and Abrahadabra are not my favorite albums by any means, but I enjoyed some ideas from those 2; and after 8 years, all this talk about honoring their roots and bringing back old elements (since I'm a huge fan of their early work), let me expecting something completely different. I know this is just one track from the album, but if this song was the one they chose to promote it, I don't think the rest can be much better.

I can clearly hear Symphonic and a bit of catchy melodic solos but where is the Black Metal part here?
Is Black Metal now is only just about the costumes and image?

Just started off listening to that song on 1.5x speed and then tried on 2.x - sounds much better this way but on 1.25x kinda like more optimal.
Should I may be trying to listen to this song backwards to get more satisfied?

However there is still hope that this song could be the worst song in the entire album, but anyway I am really skeptical about that to happened.

Are they going to go to Eurovision 2018 contest with that thing?

To be fair a lot of metal videos are very funny, even when the songs are good, which this one is not in my opinion. The way Galder looks at his guitar got me laughing more and more. I mean if the song was really intense, it might not be too out of place, but it seems like he has too much time and just does silly faces.

I wasn't expecting something like they used to do, since they departed from that style slowly but surely. But this is like SepticFlesh, with bad composition. I mean, I get that you tone down the guitars to let the symphonic side of the music shine, but SepticFlesh does it well. For example Persepolis is not really complicated in the guitar department, but it's very intense and well done. I compare with that song, because it's one of my favorites in the symphonic metal department. This is just very much lacking in energy. Hopefully the whole album will be better.

One really can't judge the "black metal purists" for going hard on Dimmu Borgir; they still claim those black metal aesthetics while presenting a completely different style of music. This song has very little in common with black metal yet they are trying to convince you they're making something akin to Enthrone Darkness Triumphant. And they're doing it badly, because the visuals for this are laughable, as the entirety of their image. They're really bad in this aspect, the quality of the music being a totally different topic on it's own.

Blackened power metal? I still enjoyed the song, but this is no longer symphonic black metal. Galder's facial expressions are the highlight of the video for me. I completely understand why people may not like it, it isn't in their more traditional style and they made it sound like they were going back to their roots.

And yet, the tweens will line up for this dog turd. If it proves me wrong and this track was a fluke, which I don't understand how you can just crawl out of your cave and put that out after an 8-year hiatus, then I will apologize for my criticism, but that is a strong IF with these guys nowadays and I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Shagrath and the band are on suicide watch. The same criticism is being said everywhere. I'm sure that they know what the fans are saying

I can't speak for everyone, but what I understand when someone accuses a band of making "pop" metal is that they're making generic music with the sole purpose of reaching a wider audience, that they're compromising their sound to become more popular. I don't think they're saying Dimmu now sounds like Lady Gaga, and I bet you also don't.

Most of the disappointed people say that this is "pop", etc. My question - what did you expect after "Abrahadabra"? This song is exactly what everyone should expect. Dimmu has evolved over the years, probably not into something their old fans wanted to hear. But they did evolve, so take them or leave them.
The song itself isn't great, but it's not too bad either. Some people would see it if they actually listened to the song, as opposed to their expectations about what a Dimmu song should like.

I have no real idea of what they used to sound like or sounded like on recent albums. Only song I listen to is Xibir, an instrumental track.

Really did not enjoy this. Found it very derivative, bland, and cheesy (in a bad way).

Of course. Was just responding to the last sentence in your post. I had an expectation of what they are meant to sound like without really having listened in the past, though.

Surely some of them will, looking back I wasn't very much better at some point. As long as it was a bit evil and the best thing I heard so far(which wasn't a lot at some point), I would listen to it vehemently and think:"Wow this is the best.". And looking back at albums I've bought.... well I would never have made those purchases today. But you either evolve your music taste or leave the genre/band behind, when you change. I feel that everyone does change.

As per your criticism, I think it's on point for this song/video. The rest of the album.. we'll see, but I did stop following Dimmu Borgir after In Sorte Diaboli... That one had a few good songs, but after that I didn't really follow them. But I feel that even Death Cult Armageddon was in this vein, just done way better(Eradication Instincts Defined for example). But that song/album was rather stronger. This is just weak.

I agree, but what I meant to say was that I understand the direction they went into.. similar approach that SepticFlesh has, just done in a very bad way. I wasn't trying to say that SepticFlesh are bad, even though they are more of a frequent listen to my taste. Not something I'd like to hear every day, but that's not a matter of quality in this case.

Another example of why I detest most music videos. If I ever hear this song again, I'm going to have mental images of that guitarist's stupid expression. And while I don't hate the song, it really didn't do much me either. Maybe it'll grow on me, but I doubt it.

Noo, it's not bad. After all, it's catchy right? Almost cheesy? Mid tempo groovy remains of something that was called black metal once... It has about 3 melody lines that are in stark contrast with each other? Production is okay? Yeah it's not bad - I'm sure they will acquire a horde of new fans. Just hope they don't find their earlier work. Compared to what this band outlined before, this is just garbage.
