Metal Storm's Favourite Album Art: Round 4!

300, then 50, then 20. Now 10. We're drawing ever closer to figuring out Metal Storm's collective favorite album artwork!

We've changed the voting scheme around every round so far, how is this one going to work? Well, it's going to be a lot like last round, but instead it's going to be 5 and 5. 5 you like/are ok with/find least reprehensible, and 5 you want to see gone. 5 thumbs up, 5 thumbs down.

In order to have your votes counted, you MUST choose both 5 thumbs down, and 5 thumbs up. If you can only find 1 or 2 you'd give a thumbs up to, then fill out the remainder with the ones you find least ugly.

Here is the top 10:
Alcest - Ecailles de Lune
Amon Amarth - Twilight Of The Thundergod
Amorphis - Skyforger
Cormorant - Dwellings
Immortal - At The Heart Of Winter
Les Discrets - Septembre Et Ses Dernières Pensées
Mastodon - Leviathan
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Swallow The Sun - The Morning Never Came
Vildhjarta - Måsstaden

Tune in on August 22nd for Round 5 when we reveal the final 3!

Remember, only picks PM'd to Doc Godin will be counted.

that was a question about the picture, it had nothing to do with the story

The comparison was valid since the disney movie displayed similar things when it comes to characters although obviously more childish looking... and both are obviously very surrealistic.

Also... I've been a child too, just like yourself and I have been around children as well... Personally I haven't seen an artwork like that ever.

did i say anything about the music on that album? no
it clearly doesn"t matter when talking about the look of the cover

you might have different experiences, but when i was in elementary school i got boks with illustrations containing colours and creatures quite similar to those in the vildhjarta cover, and my little siblings do from time to time as well
of course in earlier stages that would probably not be appropriate, yet stuff like the children"s artwork you posted was something neither i, nor anyone i knew, liked after about the first or second year of elementary school

But saying it's not artwork "aimed" at people on here makes no sense whatsoever. You seem to have a very black and white perspective: if it has animals on the front it has no place here amongst generic pictures of dragons and overdone themes. What you don't seem to get is that adults have an appreciation for fairy-tale art in its various forms. The fact it's unusual for an album of its type and that it differs from most metal artworks (and the fact much more work clearly when into its design and execution) more than trounces everything about the AA one.

Do books with illustrations for little children have dark and misty, sinister-looking villages with skulls scattered on the ground?

That's the entire point and the charm of the Masstaden artwork, it is a fairy tale artwork twisted to be something sinister.

didn"t notice the skulls before
but without those, not for pre school kids but for elementary school kids, at least in my experience yes

how is that picture obviously surrealistic?
i asked exactly that already, just getting the answer that it is

ok, then you had different experiences

it isn"t the animals that bother me, it"s the drawing style
different doesn"t necessarily mean good
there"s a reason why metal covers look the ways they do, it simply fits
of course that"s a way to make a safe bet and nothing unusually great, but still it looks good to the listeners
and just like we"d consider some experimental bands as failed, i see that cover as a failed experiment

That's like saying bands should just stick to safe and ordinary music. Music that people will expect. Hey, if you want yet another generic melodeath album then that's your tastes but artwork, like music, is best when it sparks the imagination. Not conveys what everyone has already seen and heard a thousand times before.

Seeing that Joe explained what Surrealism is (which takes as much work as looking it up in a dictionary) surrealism means exactly that: A reality that is completely different from what our world really is, like a dream.

It's not much more complicated than that.

no, that"s just saying some experiments fail

well, i saw far less stars and planets in different colours close up than i saw dark fairy tale illustrations

Meh, In the Nightside Eclipse and Storm of the Light's Bane are gone... no longer interested
Pretty much every album that's on here now is simply here because of the band's popularity, not because of the quality of the artwork, with the possible exception of At the Heart of Winter.

really? i was unaware Vildhjarta or Cormorant were more popular than kvlt acts like Emperor and Dissection...

Not to mention Immortal, Dissection, and Emperor are all dreadful album covers.

Les Discrets, Vildhjarta, Cormorant, and even Swallow The Sun are lesser known bands than the 3 I just mentioned.
