All these bands have been known for being elite both outside and inside metal world, but sometimes they got the wrong idea
Remeber when you were waiting even 3 years for your favorite band's brand new album, you run to the store buy the album (in a higher price cause is hot, you don't even want to wait until it gets cheaper) and back to your home or in your car you put that disc with that smell of new and push "Play" and you say WTF IS THIS??? Did I got a wrong album??, you check the cover and nop your nightmare is not, this albums sucks, well, that happened to me with last Sonata's album, I was about to crash my father's car because of the shock, well, I think you got my point, lets talk about your experience, tell us which album dissappointed you the most and how was your experience. C'mon ppl talk and get back here

I really don't think St. Anger is that bad. Granted, I hated it when it was first released, and it did take several years for it to grow on me, but there are some rockingly good tunes on the album. To name a few:

Frantic
St. Anger
The Un-named Feeling

For me, Risk is the worst metal album I own. Which is a shame, because I love Megadeth.

First metal album I owned was AYDY and didn't believe the reviews of how bad it was until I started listening to older Children Of Bodom.

Not quite a letdown, as I wasn't aware of the band at the time, but for being my grand opus to heavy metal it was.

Kamelot's latest is the biggest disappointment ever for me, but some of the others include The Heart Of Everything by Within Temptation, Unia by Sonata Arctica, The Divine Conspiracy by Epica and Are You Dead Yet by Children Of Bodom.

Kreator - Renewal (such a piece of shit, after the masterpiece that was "Coma of Souls")

But I could post dozens of albums that sucked donkey balls compared to a band's earlier works.

yeah. i still think anyone who voted for Saint Anger is a fool. it's not exactly like Metallica was trending up with prior releases. if you thought that album was going to be 'all that', you deserve to be let down.

I think I know where you're coming from. I wonder how St Anger could be a letdown because, imo, a letdown is a very bad album released IMMEDIATELY after a string of great ones. And, since Metallica released shitty albums long before St Anger, I wonder how it can be considered a letdown.

not sure why anyone was expecting anything other than shit to be in the bottom of that downward spiral/toilet flush.

gonna take a shot in the dark and say people are just bashing on the album to bash on it, rather than answer the question itself... what's the biggest let down?

Unia was crap after Reckoning Day, Reckoning Night which was awesome. But, no one can beat the masterpiece of crappy albums that is St.Anger... Awful songs, awful production, awful coverart.... I bought it only cause some stupid critics said it was a return to form for Metallicrap. How could they record such a piece of crap???

I'll vote for Reload. I like Metallica's 6 albums prior to that disaster, including the black album and Load, but Reload has 5 listenable songs surrounded by a load of shit. St. Anger is very tollerable to my ears.

Slayer: Divine Intervention

Pungent Stench: Club Mondo Bizarre
Morgoth: Feel Sorry For The Fanatic
Pestilence: Spheres
and so on...

I'd agree it was a letdown compared to Consuming and Testimony, but on its own it really isn't a bad release.

for me and my friends it wasn't a letdown compared to Consuming and Testimony. It was something mindblowing and awesome and unexpected. Compared to those albums it's as much a classic as it is on its own. It's up there with Cynic's Focus, both back in the day and now.

St. Anger is very tollerable to my ears.

It would be very tolerable to my ears as well, if it weren't for the terrible drum sound! Listening to the drum sound on "St. Anger" hurts my ears, (literally) almost as bad as hearing something being scratched across a blackboard. lol

As for "Spheres" being a disappointment... well, "Testimony Of The Ancients" is one of my fave albums of all time, so just about anything they released after that would be a letdown to me. I remember seeing the video for "Mind Reflections" around the time the album came out, and thinking it was a great song, and I absolutely loved the riffs! The first time I heard the album, I was a bit surprised and perplexed, if also very intrigued by it. Once I fully got into it, I saw it as a fine Pestilence album. It certainly should be hailed as one of the true tech-death classics, and is unfortunately very underrated I feel. I suppose you could class it as a letdown, seeing as Testimony... is still my fave Pestilence album, but it's a great album on it's own merits. xD "Resurrection Macabre" on the other hand, was a massive disappointment to me... I just hope their new album is better, cos at their best, Pestilence are one of the best bands out there!

Sonata Arctica - Unia - This one gets my vote hands down. It's like Celene Dion took over their singers mind and corrupted their writing. Cover to cover it was complete and utter sappy shit...total letdown. The talent of this band did not seem to make much appearance...along with everything else good about Sonata Arctica.

Metallica - St. Anger - I can't really say this album was a letdown to me, since it was part of my introduction to metal. I didn't realize how bad it was till later when I forsook it...there are a couple tracks that aren't total garbage, but still...they would never find their way into my collection. I believe someone else mentioned my second point on this album, being that their two preceding albums were utter crap (arguably crappier), this album can't really qualify as much of a letdown, seeing as Metallica had lost all hope many years prior.

Megadeth - Risk - As much of a head-shaker as this album was, imo it was not something that was particularly out of Mustaine's character. Not so much of a letdown, more of a 'come on Dave, this is gay.'

Children of Bodom - Are You Dead Yet - Their other albums would have to be good for this shit to have been a letdown. It is just lazy, trying too hard, lackluster music that is completely at home in the CoB discography.

In Flames - Come Clarity - As much as this album was not my cup of tea (aka totally gay), you have to step back and respect that this was a quality album and had a suitable place in the natural progression of In Flames' sound. They were moving toward it over the span of several albums...I would either say that everything after The Jester Race was a letdown, or none of it was.

So the letdown award goes to..........(drumroll)........

Sonata Arctica's Unia.

Fortunately I have never purchased any of these albums; therefore, these albums never disappointed me.

However, I have wasted my money on pretty shitty music in the past. I purchased an Underoath album in an attempt to become a metal head (What the fuck was I thinking?), two albums by an "Oi! Rock" group called Flatfoot 56, and a cheesy record by a Christian hip-hop group (Again, I did not know what I was thinking.). Indeed I have experienced my fair share of crappy music purchases.

It got a lot of shit from die hard death metallers but not from the press and fans that didn't mind change. Those two groups loved it.

It's a bit sad to see how Priest have been unable to follow on Painkiller's path. They released this album (which I consider their best by far), then they disapappeared in limbo for the entire 90s.

No Prayer deserves a mention when talking about shittyness in general imo. The album wasnt a let down for me personally because i was simply too young. But i can imagine a lot of the bands older fans being seriously dissapointed by this.... Especially coming after seventh son.

Absolutely agreed. The No Prayer drum sound doesn't literally hurt my ears, so it's not quite as awful as the "St. Anger" drum sound, but it is pretty awful. It sound's like Nicko's usual kit was replaced by a few cardboard boxes! lol I'm one of the few who actually likes No Prayer, but the drum sound is crap, and definitely detracts something from the songs. As you know, I'm not a fan of remastering at all, but the drum sound on that album really could use remixing...

My goal was not to start a discussion about NPFTD but, yes, it's a shitty album.
As for older fans being seriously disappointed by it after SSOASS, I was there back then and I remember.
