Apart from Running Wild, no Pirate themed Metal band springs to mind. Of course having pirate metal as a style is completely ridiculous. I was listening to a Folk Metal band the other day (it could've been The Meads Of Asphodel, I can't exactly remember) anyway, I heard this...actually I remember now, it was Moonsorrow. Anyway, I heard them being described as 'Epic Heathen Metal'. I just laughed.

Verbal Deception is Pirate Metal band, and a pretty decent one as well, though I haven't got to listen to their album yet, I hope I can soon. They got a MySpace profile. I don't find it dumb, it's entertaining, in one way or another

Yeah, but as entertaining as it may be, you can't call 'Pirate Metal' a style of metal. Can you imagine how many styles there would be if everyone went along those lines! :-O

Its mostly that they call themselves 'Pirate Metal', and I guess you can't call it a genre, its more a theme. And well, if we would believe all what the bands describe themselves as we already would have a billion genres.

But still, to a certain extent it is 'Pirate Metal' imo, but it doesn't cover the bands genre, just the theme.

Anyway, speaking of Pirate Metal, there's actually a number of bands that started to play it recently (meaning having lyrical theme like that). But what totally cracked me up was Battleheart's "True Scottish Pirate Metal" xD

Your post count is higher than your IQ...and that's a fact. We'll show 'moe' respect when you stop trolling...you can hardly claim that black metal is any less 'gay' than power or gothic...the BM genre is a ridiculous self-parody, thanks to people like you who view all other genres as 'false'.

As for stupid genre names, although it's probably been mentionned before, Unblack metal is pretty stupid. There's nothing wrong with being black musically, but Christian lyrically.

Math metal is the most horrible genre name I have ever heard... maybe it's just because I hate maths, but come on, metal is supposed to be mean much more than numbers... it's an emotion!

I have to admit, before you posting this, I ad no idea that there was such a thing as Math Metal. I checked it out on Wikipedia[here's the link], however, after reading the page, I came to believe it has nothing to do with this thread, since it does describe the genre/sub-genre [whatever] pretty well. You're argument sounds, to me, more like an argument whether it is metal or not at all.

I believe metal is whatever they make it, so long as they label their genre correctly, and art isn't always about feeling and emotions but also thought and expression. Have you ever heard the term "to demystify"?

I can describe viking metal much deeper than how that page describes math metal. Not to mention if this description is correct, then math metal is no different from progressive metal.

I don't think any metal genres are silly, they're all awesome in their own special way. Viking fits that description perfectly tbh, as does math metal and other genres. As Bluecifer said, it's all about feelings and emotions and thoughts and expressions, genres are just trying to generalise these feelings to match the ones you're in the mood for, as a general example. If I'm in the mood for some pirate metal I know what to look for!

Pay attention to the original post. I totaly agree with it. I believe Viking Metal is a stupid name made up because of bands singing about vikin' tales and such... From an instrumental point of view, its either Folk Metal or Black Metal IMHO. I say again, lyrics don't define a genre [e.g. I could be playing music with terrorizingly heavy, dynamic guitar riffs, outrageously complex drumming and sing in a growling vocal about Little Red Riding Hood or Cinderella, it wouldn't be "Fairytale Metal" it would be kickass Death Metal ]

And dig deeper into that Math Metal thing. It is what the name says, the whole music is very technical, abiding from a traditional heavy metal structure, and the vocals [read carefully] are most of the times indescifreble, and not emos whyning about math class

Some go as far as saying it ain't metal. Well it sure as hell ain't anything else! Only problem, most of you believe metal means something in a certain spirit...

Windmill metal or pencil metal? No? Dosen't exist? too bad, would be funny.
Althought i don't find any metal genre funny(98%), becouse if so called 'Pirate Metal' was born at the time when metal just begun to exist, and something like Power some time later, i think you would be laughin now at Power metal.
And i think lyrics deserve to have some influence on the genre as well as the guitar imo dot

Chuck Shuldiner invented Technical Death Metal, and he himself said he hates catagories. Venom coined the term black metal with an album name, and a unique sound. But bands like "Between the Buried and Me" think that they're original, by calling themselves mathcore, it's a joke.

I had no idea that BTBAM considered themselves "mathcore." That's lol-worthy. What a complete joke! Mathcore? Thats almost as bad as the band "Devourment" with their genital grind songs.
