so whats your favorite growl singer for me is Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth the reason is simply is the deepest, stronger and no one can compare to him i belive
I picked Opeth despite my strong dislike of them. The singers vocals are definitely some of the deepest and strongest ever. Their music just sucks though. It's like they're trying to hit the mainstream by mixing a jam-band with interspersion's of death metal, as if their intended audience can't handle too much aggression. Sounds like the thinking behind nu-metal to me.
Also, I know Bloodbath is his pure death metal band but I never got into them. (Though I respect the purer intentions behind them.)

Yeah, because they were thinking about mainstream even back in 1995...
Yeah, right....

Yeah, maybe they were thinking about mainstream in '95. Metallica and Megadeth were. This metal stuff's been around a while...

I won't discuss this too much. But this is something to laugh at. Being objective: Growls have never been mainstream. The extreme side of metal is incredibly smaller than the melodic scene. The way you compared their music to Nu-metal is also absurd. If I totally dislike a band, I try to make good arguments, not mindless hatred

I give my vote to Chris Barnes (just waiting for the impending stream of hate-mail) because not only has he been the biggest growler in metal for 20 years, he still holds up to the new guys. My second place probably goes to Jeff Walker of Carcass, although calling him a "growler" is debatable.

Ill go for Christian Alvestam..
for those who say that Mikael is trongest and deepest growl just listen to this song where Alvestam is guest vocal and Mikael lead singer..
its obvious Alvestam is much better than Mikael, who is also great (no.2)
and also Psycho (does anyone knows hes real name?) from Gloria Mortia have fucking great growl
What I really like about Hegg is that his articulation is so clear that you can comprehend almost all the lyrics, which I think is rare amongst growlers.

some metalheads would call that a downside, when you think about Gorgoroth who even take legal actions to stop their lyrics from being posted

but I agree with you!
My favourite, if I had to choose, is Grutle Kjellson of Enslaved. Those raspy vocals are pleasing to this ear.

Yeah, Jeff Walker was who popped into my head first, but yeah he might be able to be classified as a "growler" like you said. So I'd go with Barney from Napalm Death, he has a really distict growl.
I am guessing you mean Martin van Drunen. Or do you mean Patrick Mameli for Pesitlence and Theo Loomans for Asphyx? Imo Theo's growls are stronger than those of Martin.
