What is the most depressing, sad song, either lyrically, instrumentally or likewise, in any genre?

Most of you should know/recognise this, I don't think you can beat classical music in terms of the sheer magnitude of emotion.

Song of Cherubim, by Krzysztof Penderecki

I don't understand a word in the singing, and haven't found a proper lyric, but anyway, it sounds so sad, as someome who's at the gates of death or something... it makes me think of someone seriosly ill, in it's deathbed. As far as I know the guy who composed it is still alive, thought

if that's not sad enough tears of an angel (don't know who's it by)
if mad world doesn't make you cry believe me tears of an angel will.

This is classical melancholy despair in it's grandeur. You can't beat this song if you want to feel the depressing grief that comes with mourning and death:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1-TrAvp_xs

This one starts off hopeful, but then casts you into a pit of dejection and despair as you drown in grief. The contrast is what makes it work so well.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OFHXmiZP38

This one is depressing because, well... it's just sad. It feels desolate, like a musical representation of some ultimate loss, something beautiful that withered away and can never be regained:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgFpHs5dGdg

This is horrible because it's filled with the personal emotion of the writer. It's about her sister. While the writer was still very young, her baby sister died in her sleep. When people told her that her sister had died, she didn't react at first because it was so surreal. People thought that she was psychotic or broken because she didn't care. Finally her sister's death hit her, and that's when you hear the stabbing pain of grief in the music. This event has afflicted Amy Lee (the singer/songwriter) ever since and the wound has never really healed:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqvJhSIHu9Q

This one is depressing because it's really personal for me, and has become intimately connected with one of the worst experiences of my life:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9JwcuSZbpk

Anyway, that was probably waaaaaay more than you wanted, but I got a pretty good list of depressing songs. You want melancholy, gloomy, grieving, depressing shit? Here you go.

P.S. Maybe it's because I tried to put too many videos on one post, but the /youtube tags wouldn't work for me, so I just had to go with plain old links to each video.

Oh man. Into the Night by Motorhomes. Kills me every time.

My personal choice for most depressive song is Kettering, by the Antlers. That entire album is depressing as fuck - it's about a hospice worker that falls in love with a girl with terminal bone cancer. The twist is that, aside from being terminal, the girl has major emotional issues, and the relationship is completely dysfunctional.

Off the top of my head, Porcupine Tree's "Heartattack In A Layby" is probably one of the most sad songs for me. But as PT would do, it still sounds beautiful. Or at least it makes me sad.
