I don't know why I didn't think of it when you posted this, but if you want crazy Nam war stories as well as lame humour, you should watch Tropic Thunder. Which I am sure, judging by the level of kitsch action movies you watch, must be one of your favourite already.

Seen Tropic Thunder. Didn't really like it, it's basically a very, very, very poor man's version of Hot Fuzz. Both of those movies sort of parody action movies in one way or another being what I mean by that. RDJ being in a movie basically makes me want to not like it from the get-go as well, what an annoying actor he is.

And yeah, K7 and I had a chat on skype, and I agree with his sentiment that his name should be "Bad Spelling" instead of "Bad English". Speaking, his English is actually pretty good.

I suppose you're gonna quote the book at me now =P I loved it. Even Canoe Reeves somehow worked in it. Maybe I just love rotoscoping.

Nah, I read the book in a hurry to be able to watch the movie as it went out. So I just have a fuzzy memory of the book and a very bad opinion on the adaptation.

On the topic of memes, how do you all pronounce it? Meem, or like memé? I've heard people use the latter (which I think might have been the original pronunciation) but it just makes me want to punch a baby. Not out of rage or anything. I just really want an excuse to punch a baby one time.

I always find film adaptations are better without knowledge of the books. As a psychedelic comedy-drama type thing I can't really fault the film to be honest.

Meem. I've done extensive research a couple years ago. The latter is wrong.

This. Like no matter what the films are going to be different in some way or another, even if only minor details. You have to be able to separate the two, otherwise you'll pretty much be inherently disappointed.

Although I can think of some examples (like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, for instance) that do a great job of satisfying both parties.

Not that I would ever question the quality of your research, but are you 100% positive? I could have sworn there was an air of legitimacy to the latter.

Yeah a film is never going to best a book (though I've heard some people say Children of Men outdoes the book, which I've never read) so it's pretty much best to give it its dues as a film. After all it's a totally different medium.

Of course. But I was bookworm before becoming a movie buff. I actually haven't thought about that movie in years. I mean 2006 is a long time ago. I'll give it another try since you two seem to have lost all respect for me because of that.

But I really do think the average Moroccan still has this idea of the former glory of the '70s in Iran and doesn't want to forget it. I mean I remember my mother talking about how everyone, herself included, wanted to study there, and how my grand-mother loved going there... etc.. But you know, before... everything happened .

Was there any truth to this "former glory"?

I've seen plenty of Shah propaganda and know all about his military expansionism and adventurism.

But what was really happening in Iran and especially with regards to the lives of ordinary people as clearly things weren't good enough to keep the man in power?

I can see where the argument comes from: memetics. Although if English has taught as anything, it's that a shortened form of a word doesn't always sound the same.

Otherwise it'd be called Spesh Ops. And that just sounds awful.

I don't seek consensus that much, but after almost ten years, I don't see why I couldn't reconsider watching something I didn't like to see if my tastes didn't evolve.

True. For me though it was just a nice escapist dystopian sci-fi. I don't profress that it's a film that demands to be respected or anything =P
