There was music in the twenties?

Not metal, but definitely music.

There was music in The Middle Ages. Probably before that, back to Ancient Greece.

EDIT: Definitely in Ancient Greece, probably before that.

Ancient Egypt had music, performed by butt-naked porcupines for the Pharaoh.

Actually the origins of music date way back in the prehistoric time, it is to be believed (unfortunatelly not de facto) the oldest piece of instrument, so called ''Flavta Divje babe'' or the ''Divbe babe flute'' was found in Slovenia and it dates 40.000 years back. We may be a sucky country now, but man in the prehistoric times, we rocked

Ok, joke at the side, this poll is somewhat.... Weird As fot the whole music goes, i would probably choose the 80s, even though I like the music form the 70s, 90s and even 00s as well. In metal, I couldn't choose either, most of the music I like is from 90s and the firts half of 00, but then again I like some stuff from the 80s as well. So, as the poll is aking about music, I'm giving it to the 80s.

Personally couldn't care less about techniques, genre, lyrics, fashion, style ect. All that should matter in making the choice of which era you prefer should be, when your favourite music was written. For me it's hard to choose between the 80's and 90's. Most of my favourite stuff is from the 90's but my 80's collection gets an equal listening. Not a big fan of the modern era. I do like to find new bands that play good music, but wading through the amount crap today is very annoying. Prefered the days of trading and fanzines.

I think this question can't be answered in an absolute way. It all depends on what genre you like.

Black Metal: Most likely the 90s. I'm a BM fan and most albums in my collection are from the 90s. Though I believe we get many new great BM albums year after year.

Old-school Death Metal: the 90s, no doubt.

Melodeath: The 90s, no doubt.

Thrash: The 80s, no doubt.

Powermetal: The 90s.

Traditional Heavy Metal: The 80s, no doubt.

...and so on.

However, if we're speaking of the availability of albums and accessibility of metal, I would say now.
Also, personnally, I think the 80s are the most overrated decade when it comes to metal. Metal developped and branched a lot after that. Technically, 80s metal is quite outdated by today's standards.

this picture has been taken probably last year or the year before -_- Lol but if it was a joke, then good one

Now going back on topic. Way too hard to decide !!! I'd say its between 70's and 80's but ya know alot of the 90's was ''etremely'' good (haha) and theres new metal bands that kicks major asses. yep too hard

This was a tossup for me. Becuase i love thrash which was all 80's, But I'm really getting into Death Metal and Black Metal, which was mainly the 90's. And even current time, i love the metal thats going around right now! There are some great bands right now! And old bands releasing good stuff! So i couldn't vote for any of them!???

There is alot of thrash bands that started up in the 90s that are really good as well, plus many 80s thrash bands were still kicking ass in the 90s, (not Metallica though, and Megadeth in '99 either)

Lots of 80s stuff is bad, but that's really when metal started coming together, so 80's first for me. The 90's had some pretty good stuff too, so I'll give that decade 2nd. The 70's put out some great bands like Kansas, Yes, Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, etc. but lots of other classic rock is dull, so I'll give the 70's third place.

Yes very true, i guess that just adds to the tossup haha. But if i took my favorite albums of all time i think i would have to go for the 90's, most of them are in that range.

Its funny, 1980s produced many of metals classics, Metallica, Megadeth and Maiden all release gems during that time. However, it was the 1990s that i think I have to give my vote. It was a time of experimentation in metal. As the Pop era took over on the surface, the like of My Dying Bride, Opeth, Katatonia, Iced Earth, Nightwish, The Gathering, and any number of bands discovered their sound. Lets not overlook Black Metal here either, Emperor, Satyricon, Immortal and dozens of others also defined the BM genre. The 1990's also saw the obscure Tristania emerge with a fascinating sound which has been lost over recent years, Widows Weeds and Beyond the Veil were extraordinary albums. Lets not forget that there was also a wave of great thrash albums of the early 1990s as well with Slayer, Testament and Megadeth releasing some great work, with Seasons in the Abyss, The Ritual, and Rust in Peace.

For me, it would be either the 90s or the 00s. The first because I like old-school death metal, and the latter because I'm quite enjoying the hipster black metal scene that's growing day by day. I won't vote.

Music in general.....hard to say probably stuff from the mid 60's, 70's and 80's.....something happend in the 90's that made most music sound awful
In Metal I've to say late 70's and 80's...like the general music something happend in the 90's that made metal sound boring and awful

I'd agree with the '90s being bad with the exception of extreme metal (specifically black and death). I definitely wouldn't say the late '70s for metal is a great era since the only real metal band that was active was Black Sabbath, and their post-1975 releases weren't anything to get excited about (at least for me).

I know it's blasphemous for a metal fan to find fault in Priest's back catalog, but I really didn't enjoy their material from the '70s. And I've never liked Van Halen.

I voted for the 90's, it seems to have more of what I like about metal. Many of the classic prog metal albums were being released in this time period, along with several amazing black metal records.

I'm gonna say 70's, because that's when Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and others came around and really got heavy metal going.

For those of you that say 80's, let me remind you of GLAM metal. Anyone heard of Poison?

I'm pretty sure Glam is the reason it's winning, next to the fact that most of the bands you listed didn't get in gear until the 80's (Including Iron Maiden, who didn't even release their first album until 1980).

Maybe they didn't release their first album until 1980, but that doesn't mean that they weren't underground playing for a lot of heavy metal fans and thus starting the whole metal scene in the first place.

Just because a band doesn't have studio albums doesn't mean that it's not active or important.

And you're right, a lot of people like hair metal. Hell, I even like Def Leppard and such, but if Dave Mustaine is gonna say "GLAM means Gay L.A. Music" and Ronnie James Dio is gonna say "Poison killed metal" then by the gods, I'm gonna go with that!

Maiden important in the 70s?

Jeez, their demo was released in November 1979 and only then did they start to get important.

Def Leppard is not glam metal (or hair metal for that matter). They're NWOBHM.
And Dave Mustaine is the last person to bash glam, considering how much selling out he did himself. Remember Risk?
And I don't know where you're paraphrasing Dio from.

They got that poppy glam sound. The reason I like them is probably because they're not all that glam, just kinda riding the border.

80ties by all means...rock and metal was golden in those days...even many from pop music was Something back then...also movies were great

i believe it has many to do with the fact, that the atmosphere all around the world was somehow more happy and optimistic...the issue of global nuclear war was slowly becoming obsolete, everyone were expecting Soviet Russia to fall...90ties were the years of sobering and discovering new threats and enemies and then after 9/11 we fell into the new decade of terrorism, global warming, economical crisis...

of course there is good and excellent music every time, even nowadays, but 80ties were the best, i think

It is clear you idn't live in the Eighties. The atmosphere was more negative and pessimistic, the cold war was at its height, the threat of nuclear war was higher than ever. The econmic crisis was worse than it is now, more unemployed, totally beak future. Only at the end of the decade did it change somewhat

Well...obviously cant question your personal experience, but what i wrote, is basically what my mother told be about situation in our country...so dunno, maybe our socialistic paradise in Czechoslovakia was better than yours (so-called) capitalistic in Netherlands in the end

anyway here still were Commies in unquestionable lead, there were still some political prisoners, still the Party tried to control...but most people somehow knew it is going to an end, the question wasnt "if", but "when"...so there were expectations...and about the economy - it didnt worked for 30 years, so people may have been used already...

another thing - if the situation really was that bad globally, then i dont know, where did all the stuff came from...it must be sort of a miracle then
