Bands that choose to take literary works as the thematic inspiration behind their music can tend be pretty hit or miss. It's an interesting idea, this fusion of artistic mediums, but it's not always executed in a way that makes the music feel relevant to the writing. Fortunately, BM Frenchies The Great Old Ones are proving this year that they know very well how to do just that, and they're doing H.P. Lovecraft proud yet again.

What a nice surprise. Admittedly this artwork isn't especially impressive (I prefer more dark and oceanic visuals of previous album) but nevertheless, after a really successful debut, hope for a good stuff.

Bizarrely, I have the impression I heard this song at their show last september. I like it, the second half has a really cool riff and beginnig is quite crushing.

There's been a few very nice records this year but by this time in 2013 we'd already had Abyssal, Moon, Evoke Thy Lords, Dream Death, Octopus, Wormlust and Tribulation (well, in a week or so). Extremely strong start.

Over here it was more like Riverside, Steven Wilson, Wormlust yeah... and that's all the (not so) highlights I can think of This year I already have around five 9s to give, possibly.

EDIT: Remove Riverside from that list, I just remembered how I'm trying to avoid the impulse of changing the rating to a 6.

Just thought I'd post both the cover art for the Digipack and LP here since I find them both rather beautiful. I'm listening to the two released tracks right now, and barring Agalloch, this is becoming my most anticipated release of the year.

Pretty spectacular stuff. They really went for a massive sound on this one, encompassing epic harmonies in conjunction with twisting dissonance. I very much doubt many bands could pull off that combo so well but they seem to do it in their sleep. It's a little intense and relentless at times; they could probably have broken it up a little more with some creepy ambient sections but that's a minor niggle. The last track alone could have been a standalone EP. Definitely the highlight.

I loved the debut so I am stocked for this.

Plus the guy also sent me some badges with the band name on it when I ordered the debut hahah.
I also fucking love the artwork.

Very solid work. Followed the guys since they started and they evolved fast, this sounds so massive ! Antarctica has everything for song of the year (the album will also be up there me thinks...), crushing start and the second half has the most kwel guitar I've heard in a long time (the last minute or two... had to change pants).

Two albums, two masterpieces! These Tekeli-li's artworks fit perfectly with their music and the world of Lovecraft.

I just can't get anough of Antartica. Listening to it makes you feel like you were on an icy alien world like Enceladus, the frozen moon of Saturn. Makes me wana read "At The Mountains of Madness" again. Absolutely amazing stuff!

This song is massively massive. The whole album is unreal as well!

WTF is up with the spoken French parts? They sound horrible and ruin it a bit for me. The French language and metal are such a bad combination.

Musically it's great though. Let's see if more spins change my opinion.
