Bands that choose to take literary works as the thematic inspiration behind their music can tend be pretty hit or miss. It's an interesting idea, this fusion of artistic mediums, but it's not always executed in a way that makes the music feel relevant to the writing. Fortunately, BM Frenchies The Great Old Ones are proving this year that they know very well how to do just that, and they're doing H.P. Lovecraft proud yet again.

The French language and metal are such a bad combination.

I haven't heard this album yet but I'm calling bullshit here from all my previous experiences. I really dig how french sounds with metal. It can sound beautiful but also extremely raw/ugly (the good kind of ugly) depending of the sort of metal.

You can call bullshit all you want, but it's still a matter of opinion. I think at least in this particular case, the French spoken parts sound horrible, combined with the music. They seem unnecessary and don't fit the music at all. That definitely brings down the album for me. The good thing is, those parts aren't very long and frequent, so it's not all that bad.

So what? Still bullshit.

Nah, just pulling your leg, buddy (still disagree though).
How much french do they have here btw? Because I only see the first one having a french title and lyrics.

I'm not your buddy, friend!

Seriously though. The intro indeed has French in it and a couple of songs (3 I think) contain some French spoken parts. About 5-10 minutes in total I'd guess, so not a lot at all. Honestly I haven't kept track of it.

Absolute solid stuff. Finally got the chance(and Internet speed) to spun the disc.

What a superb album. Need to dig more. I'm still lust-y but other new albums are in pipeline so need to cover up that.

I loved the wobbling bass part from 6.27 to 6.48 in "The Elder Things". But, need to get in more for more hidden patches. Overall, spectacular record.

I don't really understand this post... In any case, if we sum up their entire sound, Black metal is still the major part of the sound by far. Some post moments might appear every once in a while but nothing that should require more than 1-2 lines in a review for example.

Specially live... They sound even less post.

I was just teasing a bit. No doubt this is black metal but I want to lean more towards post-black. We all hear what we want to hear...

Last time you used that line it was to call P.H.O.B.O.S. industrial sludge. So I'm not going to buy that line AT ALL.

But Doc, I really don't know what generic black metal is supposed to sound like. You know me and check my collection, anything having to do with black metal is usually in a sub-genre of it...or I stupidly confuse something that is black with another genre....PHOBOS a great example!

I guess bad in this case.

Not sure what would be a good generic black metal band. 1349 or Watain, maybe?

The good context for generic would be the bands that are considered ultimate classics that defined the genre. With black it would be stuff like Mayhem, Darkthrone, Immortal, Emperor, Burzum, etc.

I'm aware what "good context" means. I just don't listen to a bunch of the generic black. Out of those bands, the only albums I like are Ordo Ad Chao, At The Heart Of Winter and Emperor's first two.

Fuck I love this album. It's still my favorite release of 2014 at the moment, despite Infestus' latest offering being absolutely magnificent. Agalloch or Mayhem may be able to dethrone this beast, but I'm honestly not sure.

Holding this above Agalloch's latest as my current AOTY. Holds more replay value, and has a much more interesting atmosphere that is a tad more unique. Unbelievable musicianship.

Listened to this in full finally. What an album. Favorite tracks are #3 and #6. So many tempo changes and arrangements. The production is perfect; nice symmetry between all the instruments.

Nice album, very powerful. Atmospheric black / ambient doesn't cover this thought. This is clearly post-black.

I'm just going to leave this comment without response. Arguments about who is more knowledgeable about something are silly anyway.
Again, I don't know what something is because I disagree with you. Gotta love the logic

Lulz man don't really know if you are serious. It has post element but it certainly is more rooted in atmospheric black metal.
I don't really know what to say about your "sources". If you think that youtube or band itself are relieable when it comes to classification of music, then keep thinking that this is post black.
some "sources" which don't think this is post black and are as relieable as the ones you posted:
one
two
three
four
your argument is just as funny, if not more.
