Written by Richard on 01.02.2010 at 01:57 Ah, interesting. Carved in Stone was a solid album - not spectacular, but a strong Metal album - so something like that, yet 'harder', seems a very promising prospect. Their orchestral/symphonic stuff can be very good, but generally I tend to prefer their more straight-ahead Metal approach.
The main difference between 'Strings To A Web' and 'Carved In Stone', is the choruses in general aren't as 'sugary' on the new album. 'Purified' does have a very melodic chorus, but it's offest by the rest of the song being a throwback to their thrashier days. 'Tomorrow Never Comes' is probably the song that could have came straight off 'Carved In Stone'. Out of all their albums, that is the one it's closest to though. I also prefer their straight ahead metal approach, but they do the more symphonic stuff very well too. So the 'Empty Hollow' suite is a great part of the album for those fans who enjoyed Rage's more experimental side. I thought 'Carved In Stone' was a good album, and the new one is like that, just overall a bit more adventurous and heavy. Its definitely a good album, and a grower too!
