You have to be in a right mood to enjoy all high-quality albums that are inferior to the stuff that is the best(while when you listen to shitty albums you feel that they lack soul). But, maybe you haven't found anything that is superior to it? Lack of experience I guess

I got in TH since the first listen so please don't teach me.

Fenriz has released a downloadable comp of primarily 80's thrash and proto-death bands entitled Trapped Under Vice Volume I for Vice Magazine.

Fenriz' comments and playlist follow:

I started the comp by thinking of some acts that should definitely be on there. Then I mulled it over for a week. I then sat down to structure it, and I had several darlings to kill and new ones to include. I am not making a ONE STYLE comp here, like 'occult thrash' or something. I chose numbers mostly from bands that are/were old and rough and soulfully sounding, but thrash is one of the most intense genres, so it sort of HAS TO be varied WHEN I MAKE 78+ minutes here! I was thinking of dropping three of the songs to make it more like a hit parade, but one needs some ups and downs in life, ha ha. Better to leave the mix untampered with. So it is sort of a whole labyrinth of songs, a world to get lost in. I also start with two tracks that have a really underground sound, so I will lose all posers that try to listen to the mix.

TRACK LISTING:

01. Necrovore (USA) 'Mutilated Death' (1987)
02. Mental Decay (Denmark) 'Eat the Posers Guts' (1987)
03. Pentagram (Chile) 'Profaner' (1987)
04. Necrodeath (Italy) 'Agony/Flag of the Inverted Cross' (1987)
05. Morbid (Sweden) 'Wings of Funeral' (1987)
06. Poison (Germany) 'Yog-Sothoth' (1987)
07. Devastation (USA) 'Devastation' (1987)
08. Merciless (Sweden) 'The Awakening' (1989)
09. Minotaur (Germany) 'Fall of the Gods' (1988)
10. Mutilated (France) 'Funerarium' (1988)
11. Deathhammer (Norway) 'Toxic Radiation' (2008)
12. Obliveon (Canada) 'Whimsical Uproar' (1987)
13. Obscurity (Sweden) 'Demented' (1987)
14. Morbid Saint (USA) 'Beyond the Gates of Hell' (1988)
15. Vulcano (Brazil) 'Guerreiros de Sata' (2003)
16. Whiplash (USA) 'The Burning of Atlanta' (1985)
17. Infernö (Norway) 'Thrash Metal Dogs of Hell' (2004)
18. Aura Noir (Norway) Iron Night/Torment Storm' (2008)

This is his second compilation right? I guess that if anyone is going make old-school black/death/thrash albums it should be him. I like the look of that tracklist too...Morbid, Pentagram (very unknown, very cool), Aura Noir. Definitely gonna be checking this out.

Although I've always been a big fan of their earlier work, I personally feel that Darkthrones best work has been from '99 through '04. Those albums still have a very raw black metal feel and sound to them but, with some more experiance and provide a bit more diversity from their earlier work. The Cult Is Alive is a good piece of work, especially Fenriz's "Graveyard Sluts", but about half or so of FOAD was a bit bland, Dark Thrones & Black Flags however is a bit more of an acquired taste and should have been what FOAD lacked.

I think the Darkthrone of yester-year is long gone, yet it'll be interesting to see what the guys release in the future - Fenriz's "Red Planet" is surprisingly decent after listening to it a couple of times.

He does a good job actually. The vocals are nothing like any thing he's done on Darkthrone, and his use of instruments is pretty good, it's a shame it's not a LP.

Terrorizer reviewed a split of that as well as some material by Nattefrost a couple issues back. They scored it an 8 and had nice things to say about Red Planet (Fenriz' was added to the name later after it came out there was another band of the same name) and not as much nice to say about Nattefrost's half of the split... so it must/will exist on a tangible release soon, if not already.

Hm, good to know thanks for the info man. I'm an avid Nattefrost listener, and meanwhile there is recycled material on "Engangsgrill" I very much enjoy it, it's time for him to release another proper LP instead of EP releases, the last thing Natte released was a b-sides & live track album - again good, but not satisfying enough.

I've been loving the hell out of the last three Darkthrone records. Transilvanian who? A Blaze in the Northern what? F.O.A.D, The Cult is Alive and Dark Thrones and Black Flags slay everything they've done, save for Panzerfaust and Under a Funeral Moon. I like everything about the new albums...awesomely shitty lyrics, awesomely shitty clean vocals, awesomely shitty "not-give-a-fuck" attitude.

If that's your personal taste, then fair enough - but Transilvanian Hunger and A Blaze in the Northern Sky made much more of an impact, and have more historical importance. Their recent stuff is unlikely to have the same lasting value IMO.

It's interesting to note that when they started going out of their way to present a 'we don't give a fuck' punk-like attitude, that was also the time when they made their first music video.

I won't deny either albums impact and I still spin "A Blaze..." with mild frequency. Maybe I was a little over zealous, I just got home from the bar. I will say, though, that I haven't been able to listen to Transilvanian Hunger in it's entirety for several years.

I guess I just really like the fact that they don't take black metal seriously anymore, at least not in the 'classic' norse sense of te term....because I sure as hell don't take it seriously anymore.

same. i really don't care for the album closers... i usually am done with TH after 5 tracks. don't like Panzerfaust particularly when compared against the rest of their discography.

i like their new direction, but i think "Hate Them" is my favorite release of theirs.

I'd just come back from the pub as well, and was/am wearing my old Transilvanian Hunger shirt, so that put in me in that frame of mind!

But whilst I stand by what I said, I also take your point. The old albums captured that moment in time, and have a certain value attached to them, and that's what I associate Darkthrone with.. but realistically, things aren't the same now. Nocturno and Fenriz must be in their mid/late 30's now, and after so many albums, trying to remain 'necro' and obscure, still wearing corpsepaint and everything probably wouldn't seem quite right!

I haven't come from a pub, but I'm at work drinking whiskey, so hopefully I'm on the same mental level

The problem is that their "new" direction just isn't new anymore. Since the brilliant Sardonic Wrath, they've gone very slowly downhill, still releasing quality albums until Circle the Wagons. Just too boring

Yeah, Sardonic Wrath was the last album of theirs that appealed to me enough to buy the CD. It's fine that they have their current attitude, but a new Darkthrone album isn't like a big thing anymore - it's just another album.

BTW, you must have a good job if you can get away with drinking at work..!

Ha, a bit predictable but still fairly amusing. I also didn't know until now that they had another album out and, while the track listing seems to have a few cheesy titles, the ideology behind the album is intriguing.

Just listened to the holy trinity of "ABitNS", "UaFM" and Transilvanian Hunger" again for the first time in way too long and now I'm freezing. For all the talk of Darkthrone clones in the BM scene, not a single one of them have managed to come close to matching this atmosphere. Darkthrone Holy Darkthrone indeed...
