All Tomorrow's Funerals is essentially all yesterday's funerals, with a few new ones.
Huh?
Ok, it goes like this. Death metal stalwarts Autopsy wrote and recorded four new songs and while they were at it, they re-mastered a bunch of their older EPs, and tossed them all into this ugly 22 song, 72 minute package.
Autopsy is one of those old school death metal bands that still play it the old school way (see also: Bolt Thrower, Asphyx, Obituary, skip Morbid Angel), which is to say raw. Add in adjectives like fast, slow grind, chaotic, and angry. You know, the traits one might expect from a form of music with "death" as a prefix. Rawr.
Their approach encapsulates mixtures of warp speed tempos followed by shifts to slower grinds, Slayer-esque solos, and their own pretty identifiable vocal approach. Chris Reifert is not only the rare drummer/vocalist, his stylings combine standard grunt/growls with over the top antics that make him immediately recognizable, as well as one of those "love him/hate him" types.
While an hour and change of death metal - whether the raw old approach or the sterile, crystal-clear current approach - is perhaps overkill for a single release, this collection benefits from being a combination of their current incarnation and prior EP's. Every 4 songs the sound shifts slightly. This prevents the album from getting terribly stale, unlike the later releases of, say, Nile or Behemoth.
I never really was into Autopsy back in the day, as they say. Not sure why. In retrospect I'm glad I didn't stumble on to them. While modern death metal is good enough, I guess, I prefer the old approach I grew up with. Thanks to shit I overlooked then, I have some old new (or is it new old?) stuff to check out.
Now if you will excuse me, I'm destined to fester.

I am a huge dm fan and I have to agree with Troy on this one. To me the only interesting and genuinely good albums by Autopsy are the first two. |

The Tomb Within EP definitely tops that imo. |

| I enjoy the first two the most, but the other ones have here and there tracks that are really good. They did set the bar wayyy high for themselves after putting out Mental Funeral. |
