What goes on in the head of Chino Moreno? Now this is not just about the lyrics of this album, this said-to-be the best Deftones album till now. And I agree. But still, from where does he get the inspiration, from where does he get the mood? Chino himself has said that the lyrics are just emotions from an instant of time, a shard of an event. But what makes the lyrics so complete and special is the vocabulary Chino uses - what words he uses, how he lines them up, how he pronounces and how he twists them. And again, it's not only about lyrics.

The guitar-riffs are rather simple (as I've tried to play some of Deftones' songs) but they are very effective and atmospheric. Long distorted riffs mixed with some experimental guitar-playing and the result is rather amazing. The drums are never too overplayed, always just backing up, giving power when needed and taking it slow when wanted. That goes for the bass as well - giving depth to the sounds of Deftones - lines that work silently with the listeners ears and sometimes attack from behind, just to leave 'the victim' floating among the tunes and sounds. And the final push comes from the digital tunes and turntable sounds that are hidden amongst everything else - comes to connect the listener with Deftones.

Now about the album specifically. It is true, 'White Pony' is said to be the best Deftones album. With songs like 'Digital Bath', 'Knife Party', 'Passanger' and 'Pink Maggit' the album sinks into the mind of the listener. And while these are the songs that make one listen to the album again and again then after a while one may find oneself humming songs like 'Change (In the House of Flies)', 'Teenager' and 'RX Queen' - they just need a bit more time to digest them.

What's interesting about this album is that it has rather many 'limited' and 'enhanced' versions. While the original cover is dark-grey with the white pony on it, there are also covers in blue, red and white - each of them having a slightly different tracklist. I especially like the version with 'Back to School (Mini-Maggot)' on it - so to say a follow-up track for 'Pink Maggit'.

The whole album has this 'Passanger' effect, I can say. It goes on and on, and you actually never want it to end. 'Now to calm me, Take me around again, Don't pull over , This time won't you please, Drive faster!'
And again.. And again..

This isn't their best album, but I still really like it. Back to School, Passenger, Teenager, and Change are damn good songs. The lyrics are pretty cool too, from what I remember.

This was the album that introduced me to deftones! The first song I ever heard by them was "Knife Party" and I was hooked ever since... I also love the song pink maggot (hence the name). Though I would have to say that "deftones" was their best CD yet... But I havn't listened to "Saturday Night Wrist", so I can't really say that with the confidence I had before that album came out. !!

deftones is a nice band... i can enjoy some of their songs. This is their worst work on my opinion. The best is Around the fur, that has my favorite song ''Headup''.

member of the true crusade against old school heavy metal, early 80s thrash, NWOBHM, traditional doom, first and second wave black metal, old school death metal, US power metal, 70s prog rock and atmospheric doomsludgestoner. o/

White Pony is one the best albums I ever heard. They don't need to show off skill habilities to make a great riff. Many metalheads don't understand this and it's a shame. I like a lot that deep warm vocals and plus the atmospheric and psycho guitars creates the sound that you can hear through this amazing album.

Around the Fur and White Pony are great albums IMO.
Liked the Deftones since I first saw them in '96
