This album makes Lucifer cry.

1782 marks the year in which a woman named Anna Göldi was decapitated for supposedly being a witch. It was the last time in Europe that a "witch" was executed . In honor of this falsely accused woman, this Italian stoner doom band have named themselves simply 1782. In alignment with their namesake, the two musicians center their music around the occult lyrical themes of demons, sacrificial rites, and — you guessed it! — Satan.

Since their inception in 2018, 1782 have produced two albums as well as a split release with Greek stoner band Acid Mammoth. Musically, they pursue a path heavily inspired by the droning, fuzzy soundscapes of Electric Wizard. Now, with their third full-length release, Clamor Luciferi (or The Cry of Lucifer), I was personally hoping that the band would branch off in their musical development and create an identity of their own. Sadly, I was disappointed in this regard.

Sure, the guitar-work is solid. They've certainly mastered the art form of buzzing, mesmerizing riffs … but so have countless other bands. What sets 1782 apart? Not much, if anything. The vocals, more hidden behind the instruments in this mix than on previous releases, are especially monotone and thus irritating. They are presumably meant to sound mysterious and nebulous, but instead come off as disinterested and bland. Except for the eerie organ intro at the start of the album and some melodies on the song "Devil's Blood", there is no musical element that is particularly memorable.

In conclusion, 1782 waste their potential on Clamor Luciferi with 40 minutes of ultra-fuzzy yet bog-standard stoner doom. A disappointing offering for the Prince of Darkness.
