Demon Hunter have the dubious pleasure of being the very personification of that which most metalheads these days hate - they are both metalcore and Christian. The truth; however, is that musically Demon Hunter doesn't really deserve all the bashing they will inevitably receive from prejudiced metal fans.
Although Triptych contains songs written mainly on the familiar metalcore formula of mixing screamed and aggressive verses with whiny, atonally 'sung' refrains, Demon Hunter does still manage to sound fairly unique. This could be due to the production, which is more 'clinical' than most metalcore, or the fact that Ryan Clark possesses a deeper and unusually profound tone of voice. The band even includes some symphonic elements here and there. All of this makes the feeling of deja vu that so many metalcore bands out there inspire quite minimal when listening to Triptych. It might be the same stuff but it sounds fresh and this is a pretty big trait in this genre. The band also reveals some unusual influences by covering Prong's "Snap Your Finger Snap Your Neck". All in all, while this isn't exactly the most original music out there, it is listenable and doesn't bore as quickly as other representatives of the style would.
Demon Hunter's Triptych is a decent album in a style that is largely eating its own tail. The band isn't able to be completely unique but at least they try.

| I found this to be the weakest of their four albums, but still a good record, I would give it much higher than a 6.5. |
