Appearance Of Nothing is a new progressive band from Germany. It's not so easy to put a real label on this combo because they mix a really complex technical Prog a la Dream Theater with some vocals that remind me some US thrash American bands. Weird isn't it? Yes sure, but well at least it's original and even if "Behind Closed Doors" isn't perfect, there are a lot of good things on this release so…
For sure Appearance Of Nothing plays Prog Metal. I mean that you'll find all the ingredients of the style, that are super melodic riffs, technical soli (Guitars and Keyboards) with some really complex musical structures on each songs. But it's not "happy", their music is Dark and a bit depressive on a side and above all, we flirt with Thrash a lot of time. Don't misunderstand me, it' Prog, it's not Thrash and doesn't sound like Thrash but there are some influences in the music. The voice of the singer for example cannot be compared to the nice beautiful standard ones of the genre and at the opposite it's a bit like a good hoarse "rock" one. It's cool, new and original and since that the songs are good…
On the other hand, if you have a lot of good points on this release, there are also some average things in this release. The production for example is a bit average, and the sound isn't perfect. The album is also a bit short (only 36 minutes). Also if some songs are clearly catchy, some others can be a bit boring at the end. The album is a bit unequal, but overall it's ok so don't worry a lot.
"Behind Closed Doors" is a nice try. Original and authentic I really believe that we should hear some good things about this band if they know how to correct those little mistakes. Fans of Prog who want something "else", have a look on Appearance Of Nothing's last effort.
