Agathodaimon - Serpent's Embrace 21 June 2004
01. Cellos For The Insatiable 02. Serpent's Embrace 03. Rebirth 04. Light Reborn 05. Faded Years 06. Solitude 07. Limbs Of A Stare 08. The Darkness Inside 09. Bitter End 10. Feelings
This is the come back of Agathodaimon, three years after "Chapter III", with their 4th new release "Serpent's Embrace" through the German Label Nuclear Blast. This combo from Germany did a real evolution in its music through the years, and this new album confirms this feeling again. For sure "Serpent's Embrace" will provoke a real controversy between all the fans of the band. The fact is that this release keeps evidently the roots of their music, but also goes in some other new directions like Gothic music or pure Power/Death metal. And of course when there are changes, some fans are disappointed, but on the other hand some new ones can be touched…
In my opinion this is maybe a new Agathodaimon that we have here. If it was real Black Metal in the past, I could say that their music is more and more closer to Extreme Gothic metal than anything else. The proof with this new album comes with some tracks, which sound more like a really dark and extreme Crematory than anything else. The song "Serpent's Embrace" for example with a lot of clean vocals and a lot of Keyboards [which really sound electronic] could be the best example to show my feeling. And it's the same with a track like "Solitude"… No Black Metal vocals here, only the nice voice of a female singer for a piano ballad which should be done by well … Evergrey maybe . All is really well done the songs are catchy, but the only stuff which could recall the old Agathodaimon are certainly the excellent guitars riffs and solo, and the Black Metal vocals of Sathonys. For the rest no doubt that the band is changing its musical direction. And is it a real problem ? Well in my opinion, yes… For the old fans of the band who are at 100% into black metal, but for the other ones, who want something catchy and really easy of access, this album is perfect. However some songs are really heavy and close to the extreme metal classification. "Limb Of A Sare" for example is violent, with strong vocals and strong riffs. At the end I could say that this album is varied.
"Serpent's Embrace" is a really big production, this kind of album will hit the charts without any doubt, and of course you know like me that with Nuclear Blast, there is again a great production. Great cover, great sound etc, but this is an habit with the bands of the German team, and this is not a surprise…[keep this good work and don't change anything for me please]
At the end this album will have two publics. The ones who will say that the band is now just a commercial stuff, and the other ones who will find it more than catchy and who will love it. This is not a bad album at the opposite, but it's just different and in my opinion the band just follow the direction of a lot of the actual Metal bands. For my parts, I find some tracks really good, and I have no doubt that this album will be for you, the ones who like this kind of music and this kind of bands.
