Angelus Apatrida - Evil Unleashed March 2006
01. Overture: The Dictate 02. Versus The World 03. Fuck You 04. Backbone Crusher 05. Gone Away 06. Time To Rise Hell 07. Negotiating The Clowns 08. The Thornmaker 09. Sons Of Revolution 10. Hereditary Genius 11. Killers And Killed 12. Domination [Pantera cover]
When one thinks of the words "triumphant" and "epic", and is then asked to associate those words with a musical genre, thrash metal doesn't usually show up in the top three... Angelus Apatrida prove themselves a very aggressive exception to that rule with their full-length debut, Evil Unleashed, an impressive assault that shows Thrash metal can make you pump your fist as much as bang your head.
Evil Unleashed starts out with a clean, mostly instrumental intro, reminiscent of Iced Earth, "Overture: The Dictate", and then explodes into the first real song, "Versus The World". And the song truly makes you feel like you could take on the world. Aggressive, chugging guitars over a steady, aggressive pace into the chorus, with Guillermo Izquierdo's gruff - yet melodic - vocals soaring over the hanging power chords of Izquierdo and second guitarist David G. Alvarez.
"Gone Away" is a perfect song to illustrate a little different direction for the record, with a chorus that seems almost heartfelt. The main drive of the song comes in the fast, pedaling guitar riff, which passes through the pre-chorus, into a slow, rhythmic guitar riff topped with aggressive-yet-emotional vocals, and eerie lyrics. To pay homage to their forefathers, and demonstrate their love for the classics, they included a cover of "Domination" by Pantera.
All in all, this album starts Angelus Apatrida's discography out with a killer punch. Plenty of modern flavor, to keep the feeling fresh and plenty of classic elements to show these Spanish metalheads' loyalty to tradition. If you don't have this album, or haven't heard it: Get it!

My friend you are most definitely not hearing all the thrash bands you should be if you think it's only average... I'd be happy to do some band-name dropping if you're interested. |
