The Cult Ranked 🪙

The Cult it is one of my favorite band.
Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy band, it had a really unique style mix gothic, hard, heavy Rock. Maybe The Cult doesn’t fit in MS standards but their originality made that lots of metal heads or music lovers follow their discography,

1. The Cult - The Cult
1994 This record it’s really amazing the mix of sounds and textures heavy and sometime alternative, shows a band more mature and they can reinvent their own music. One the greatest guitar work of Bill Duffy.
2. The Cult - Sonic Temple
1989 Sonic Temple is their best record at that time the band goes harder than ever with more complex songs great guitar riffs and the record it’s plenty of classics.
3. The Cult - Electric
1987 Great production the sound is great the songs are amazing maybe the best shape of the band and a comercial success, but the cover of Born To Be Wild was a wrong decision, no one wants a hear that song even in 1987.
4. The Cult - Choice Of Weapon
2012 This is one of the heaviest and darker record of The Cult the guys back in a sound that made in the early 80”s but more heavy.
5. The Cult - Ceremony
1991 back in those days I was really excited by the release of Ceremony I had a lot of expectations, the record it’s really good unfortunately this record fails in charts cause that year the music change to a new sound and the cult wrongly was consider for some people as a glam band, Ceremony was great in a bad band moment.
6. The Cult - Love
1985 This records remains me a first works from Ian Astbury, Death Cult, is a rock dark gothic in the way of Peter Murphy’s Vampire Rock, It is a really good record. For most of the fans it’s a number one.
7. The Cult - Under The Midnight Sun
2022 This is the last record… You don’t need to listen too much to notes that this is a classic and the best record in the last years
8. The Cult - Beyond Good And Evil
2001 after a long hiatus of 7 long years the band comeback was a really hard rock record, great songs and great drums from Matt Sorum.
9. The Cult - Born Into This
2007 Good hard rock, second comeback the band doesn’t work as is expected to much noise and experimentation but under this it’s still The Cult.
10. The Cult - Hidden City
2016 I felt that this record it is totally unnecessary and sounds like a compromise with the musical industry. The record have their moments but it dissolves in the oblivion.
11. The Cult - Dreamtime
1984 I’ve note the existence of this record after years of listening the band, I always thought that their debut was Love .

Hi !
Nice to see a list about the cult which is one of my favorite group also !
I agree with you the 1994 album is underestimated and is one of the best album from their discography. I also like the 1rst album very much wich is a the low bottom of your list. I bought this album when it was out back in 84 and at that time i was listening to hard rock and new wave bands like early U2 and the cure. Also liked siouxsie and the banshees or other groups like killing joke or the mission. It's maybe why this first album sounds familiar to me.
All i can say is that the cult is one of the rare bands where you don't have any stinker albums. Even Hidden city which is in my option the worst album they did is a correct album i think !
At the moment i'm rediscovering "ceremony" and i like it more and more...

Reminds me I want to do the marathon trough all their albums. Back at the time I was only going with the compilation Pure Cult (1993) and I loved it. I am unaware of any other of their albums (with the exception of Ceremony, which I used to own, but got rid off for some reason). Really time to go through their catalogue. Writing it down now, will do asap...

So, I have done the marathon now. And I can say that I really like this band. Almost naturally my preference lies clearly on their pre 1994 albums, since before the marathon I have only been really familiar with the 1993 compilation, which compiles all their best songs up to that point and which I all like quite a bit.
My favourite albums are probably Sonic Temple and Love. Then come Ceremony and Electric. Now, the 1994 and the 2001 albums are interesting since they mark quite cut in their style. A cut I dont really appreciate, but they are good albums despite of that. The debut is quite alright, but they hadnt quite reached their style yet I would say. In the 2007, 2012 and 2016 albums I didnt find much to dig unfortunately.
