QOTSA Album Ranking

Thumbs up: 0
They are one of the few “mainstream” rock bands that are widely accepted by many metal heads. They have yet to release an album I dislike. Here is my “personal” ranking of all of QOTSA’s studio albums. They’ve been one of my favorite band for over 15 years now. Maybe this will also help some new fans discover more of their discography. Feel free to discuss. I know many will disagree.

1. Queens Of The Stone Age - Songs For The Deaf
This album is definitely the goat, universally acclaimed and well respected. Also where I’d tell anyone new fan to start.
2. Queens Of The Stone Age - ...Like Clockwork
Another example of how their best albums seem to have significant collaboration from outside musicians. This album has a pretty impressive guest list. It also has one of the weirdest, most non-traditional opening songs you’ll hear on a mainstream rock album. Every song stands out, it’s a close second.
3. Queens Of The Stone Age - Era Vulgaris
This is not the popular pick for third place, but it might actually be my favorite QOTSA album. It is the the underdog. In my opinion, incredibly underrated. It is their most dark, weird, raw and experimental. This is probably what turned some people off. Give it a chance!
4. Queens Of The Stone Age - Rated R
Many people will say that this is their best album, and I can easily see why. Next to Songs for the Deaf this would be the album I’d recommend to new fans. It is quintessential QOTSA.
5. Queens Of The Stone Age - Lullabies To Paralyze
Another album with some mixed opinions. There’s a lot going on here. It’s long, diverse, and a bit dense at points, but that’s what I love about it. Also one of their darker albums…but paradoxically, not one of their heaviest. I guess the name fits.
6. Queens Of The Stone Age - Queens Of The Stone Age
An absolutely awesome debut. Nothing else they’ve released has sounded quite like this. This would be my top recommendation for any haze loving fan of stoner rock/metal. The desert rock vibes are strong on this one.
7. Queens Of The Stone Age - In Times New Roman...
Their latest album shows that they still got it. Definitely a step up from Villains. The songs almost seem to pull a little bit from all their previous albums. I really like this release, it’s just hard to out rank their earlier stuff.
8. Queens Of The Stone Age - Villains
I don’t think Villains is a bad album, I just think it’s the biggest misstep in their discography. I seem to start to lose attention about half way through. As I pointed out earlier, QOTSA seems to write and record their best stuff when they collaborate with guest musicians, and this album has zero guests.
