Obscura - Guitarist Working On Instrumental Solo Album

As posted on Blabbermouth, guitarist Christian Muenzner of German progressive death metallers Obscura is working on an instrumental guitar record for a tentative spring release.

The album will feature Hannes Grossmann (Obscura, Blotted Science) on drums, Steve DiGiorgio (Sadus, Death, Iced Earth) on bass and Daniel Galmarini (Mercury Falling) on keyboards, with guest appearances by Ryan Knight (The Black Dahlia Murder, ex-Arsis), Per Nilsson (Scar Symmetry, Kaipa) and Bob Katsionis (Firewind). Vic Santura (Dark Fortress, Triptykon) will handle the production duties on the CD, the drums for which will be laid down starting on December 27.

Commented Muenzner: "Being a fan of instrumental guitar music for many years, this has always been a dream of mine. After I finished recording my guitar parts for the upcoming Obscura album Omnivium, I felt quite inspired and spent all of my free time working on the songs for this project.

The CD is gonna contain 12 instrumental songs. Stylistically, the music is quite diverse and has influences from various genres such as neoclassical shred, fusion, power metal, hard rock, prog and thrash metal. And, of course, the songs will have guitar all over it! I like to describe it as '80s Shrapnel Records shred meets modern metal.

I am super-happy and honored that some of the world's best metal musicians agreed to work on this album with me! I'm very excited and can't wait to hear their contributions!"

Obscura - Album Recording Completed

Obscura has recently completed work on their brand new album Omnivium. Omnivium was recorded at Woodshed Studio in southern Germany with engineer V. Santura (Triptykon, Dark Fortress) and is expected to see a March 2011 release date via Relapse Records. Additional album details will be announced shortly.

Obscura drummer Hannes Grossman commented on recording Omnivium: "The recording process was intense and time-consuming, but it brought us many steps forward as musicians both individually and collectively. The songs are still catchy, but there are more epic parts involved, as well as faster and more melodic songs. The extremes of the band's sound extend on all sides, so to say. Expect some things which have never been done before like this in Death Metal!"

Additionally, Grossman is working on his first instructional drum DVD titled "Progressive Concepts for the Modern Metal Drummer". The DVD will feature different chapters about hand/foot techniques, blast beats, advanced double bass drumming, rhythmic modulations, and song and performance tutorials.

Grossman commented on his forthcoming DVD: "After the recordings for Obscura's new album I decided to start filming because the energy of the recording process was still valid. The final motivation came from Nile drummer George Kollias, with whom we toured in Japan. Thanks again, Bro'! Of course the DVD will not only feature solo and song performances, but also very deep advice about the things that I use, like finger control technique, hybrid techniques, advanced foot technique or odd-time signatures."

Omnivium tracklist:

01. Septuagint
02. Vortex Omnivium
03. Ocean Gateways
04. Euclidean Elements
05. Prismal Dawn
06. Celestial Spheres
07. Velocity
08. A Transcendental Serenade
09. Aevum

Obscura - Unveil New Album Title

Progressive death metal act Obscura has unveiled the name of their forthcoming full-length as Omnivium.

Omnivium was recently recorded and now being mixed at Woodshed Studio in southern Germany with engineer V. Santura (Triptykon, Dark Fortress). The nine-track album will see an early 2011 release date. Additional album details will be made available shortly.

Obscura's Steffen Kummerer issued the following update from the studio: "Although we recorded again with our long time friend and producer V. Santura in the Woodshed Studios, the studio sessions were hard work and lots of sweat. It was for the best though since Omnivium is definitely the next step for this band."

Christian (Muenzer - guitar) recorded some outstanding solos with a new 8 finger tapping technique, Jeroen (Paul Thesseling - bass) brought his own stamp of fretless tone into the mix again, and Hannes (Grossmann - drums) recorded his heaviest session to date and broke through the 260 bpm line. Everyone brought lots of great ideas to the table and made Omnivium a truly collaborative band effort. Omnivium sounds solely like Obscura, and brings us a step closer to reaching our unique vision of progressive death metal."

Obscura - Begin Recording New Album

Progressive death metal act Obscura has begun recording the follow-up album to their breakthrough release Cosmogenesis at Woodshed Studio in southern Germany. Engineer V. Santura (Triptykon, Dark Fortress) will helm the recording. An early 2011 release date is expected with additional album details to be announced soon.

Obscura founder Steffen Kummerer commented on the new album: "We are glad to work with our long-time friend V.Santura once again to record our new album. The new material feels broader in some way as everybody in this band brought many unique ideas to the songwriting and we were able to integrate different elements into our sound. More open chords, more acoustic guitars, more seven string shred-tunes. Remember: more is always more. We are excited to create another album of progressive death metal and to start touring through the whole world in early 2011."

Obscura's recording and touring line-up remains as Kummerer on guitar and vocals, Christian Muenzner on guitar, Jeroen Paul Thesseling on bass and Hannes Grossman on drums. The band will round out the Cosmogenesis touring cycle with a performance as part of the Mezcal Metal Festival in Mexico City, Mexico in September.

Jeroen Paul Thesseling (Obscura/Ex-Pestilence) - Bass Players In Death Metal Should Be More Audible In The Mix

Dutch bass player Jeroen Paul Thesseling (Obscura/Ex-Pestilence) says most bassists should be more audible in death metal recordings. "In many of the death metal productions the bass guitar is simply absent or inaudible in the mix, which is a shame. Perhaps this is one of those aspects that will change as the genre evolves. We are lucky to have bassists like Steve DiGiorgio and Alex Webster, both of whom have contributed greatly to the death metal style of bass playing."

Further information can be found at www.jeroenthesseling.com and www.warwick.de

Thesseling joined the German progressive death metal band Obscura in 2007. He toured North America and recorded their second full-length album Cosmogenesis, released via Relapse Records in February 2009. This August, Obscura will embark on a European tour alongside ATHEIST. With PESTILENCE, Jeroen played on their fourth album, "Spheres" (1993).

Obscura - Join Relapse Contamination Tour 2009

Origin, Skinless, Obscura, Man Must Die and Antigama will join forces for the first-ever European edition of the legendary "Relapse Records Contamination Tour". The tour will bring extremity as only Relapse Records can provide to the UK and Europe in an extensive four week run.

Tour spearhead Origin recently issued their new full-length "Antithesis" to massive worldwide acclaim! Widely thought of as one of the most brutal and technical death metal bands in the world, Origin return to stake their claim as the leaders of metal's new wave of extremity. Faster, heavier, and decidedly more advanced than anyone could have ever envisioned the genre becoming, "Antithesis" is a modern day death metal classic which proves Origin stand head and shoulders above their peers. Infamous New York death metal destroyers Skinless will co-headline the bill and bring their patented brand of chaos back to Europe for the first time in years. Widely-regarded as one of the best live death metal bands in the world with their slamming death metal grooves and hell-bent commitment to fun, Skinless will be previewing new material from their forthcoming new album as well as delivering all the crushing hits from their previous four full-lengths.

The newest addition to the Relapse family, Germany's technical metal masters Obscura boast a lineup packed with ex-members of such legendary bands as Pestilence and Necrophagist. Obscura's forthcoming Relapse debut "Cosmogenesis" (coming March 2009), might very well be THE death metal record of 2009 and will more than justify the bands already impressive pedigree. Prepare to be amazed! Scotland's metal wrecking crew Man Must Die, the first-ever UK band signed to Relapse, will release their new full-length"No Tolerance For Imperfection" in April 2009. The band previously turned heads in '07 and '08 with their Relapse debut "The Human Condition" and tours alongside heavyweights such as Misery Index, Despised Icon, Hate Eternal, Kataklysm, Cephalic Carnage and more. Poland's progressive grindcore quartet Antigama will release their new full-length in March 2009. The follow-up to the bands critically-acclaimed debut "Resonance", the new album will undoubtedly see the band push their off-kilter grind attack to new sonic levels.

The "Relapse Records Contamination Tour" is an institution in North America and has been a vehicle used to expose some of its newest and most exciting bands over the course of the label's 17-year history. Previous "Contamination Tours" have included bands such as Mastodon, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Neurosis, Nile, High On Fire, Cephalic Carnage, Coalesce, Origin, Misery Index, and many, many more.
