This topic is for the discussion of Anime - The Japanese animation which is either loved or hated by the majority of movie-going individuals.

My experience of the art form is limited however, only being familiar with the films "Princess Mononoke" "Spirited Away" & "Howls Moving Castle".

So if there are any Anime experts out there, please feel free to jump straight into this thread and recommend me some movies that I can't live without!

Cheers.

Hey, thanks a lot for the thorough response here! Gankutsuou looks pretty fantastic just based off of the screenshots I saw online - the animation seems to have a very unique, creative quality about it. It looks like Natsume Yujincho is one of the series they recommend on Anime Planet for Mushishi fans as well so I think that's the next one I will go with. Horror anime, you say? I absolutely love horror films and wasn't really even aware that there were horror animes out there - recommendations, haha?

I admit that I'm not a fan of horror. In terms of anime, the closest I get to is Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, which is more horror/action. Looking down the list of horror anime on Anime Planet, I'm sure you'll find something. Just bear in mind that "Higurashi" and "When They Cry" is part of the same franchise.

Ah, yes, thank you ... guess I should have thought of that myself, haha. You know, I am actually familiar with both Vampire Hunter D films and enjoy them accordingly; the quality of the animation of the second one is, of course, better but I feel the first one had a superior storyline. I have also seen Wicked City which is kind of like surrealist horror and it was cool from what I remember although it's been a while since I have seen it.

Aside from the stuff that everyone's watched (like Inu Yasha, Cardcaptors, Pokemon, Dragonball, etc.), I don't really watch anime. I recently got into Panty And Stocking With Garterbelt. I have to say I was entertained. It's what I imagine Powerpuff Girls would be like if it had the wtf factor of Japan and was targetting an older audience without just being porn.

Hey, I'm interested in the Gundam series, but I have no idea which one is the best. I watched Gundam Wing only (but not completely), and I hated those gay moments in the anime (you know, Trowa with Quatre). I watched Wing thinking it was the best in the series (my interest in it started because of a japanese SNES fighting game I played when I was a kid - Gundam Wing: Endless Duel). So, which Gundam is the best?

Okay, first of all, let's acknowledge that there is A LOT of Gundam out there. As a result, there is no "best" series because there is so much to be subjective about. It would be like asking which metal album is the best: you'd get dozens of answers. For example: Gundam Wing is actually my favorite (though I won't deny the fact that it is kind of flawed). It all kind of depends on what you're looking for.

Still, that isn't to say Gundam isn't without its themes. Nearly every series is focused on "war is hell" melodrama to some level, with varying amounts of angst. I generally consider the traditional UC timeline to be the angstiest, but I think the 08th MS Team OVA series is a pretty good recommendation, as it is shorter with some pretty sweet animation. If you're looking for something more "manly," then I suspect you might find something to like in G Gundam (as weird as it is). Gundam 00 is often recommended to people new to the franchise as it is the series that is the closest to our modern global politics.

I'm afraid that's as far as my experience can take you. Gundam Wing is generally recommended simply because it was the US's main introduction to the franchise (personally, I never thought Trowa and Quatre were that intolerable, but then again I watch the dub, so . . . . . yeah). Fortunately, there is a graphic that provides a massive summary of all the series, so maybe if my advise doesn't help, this might steer you towards what you want.

If you're interested in character development in the horrors of war, semi-realistic robots (capable of running out of ammo/fuel), and a decent dose of political intrigue, then Gundam is a great franchise. If you just want to see big robots hit each other, then allow me to recommend Super Robot anime like G Gundam, Mazinger, Big O, GaoGaiGar, and Gurren Lagann.

As a Gundam fan, Gundam Wing is not very high on my list. If you don't mind the old animation, go for the original Mobile Suit Gundam (If you don't want to watch the whole series, it was compiled into three movies). I don't recommend watching any Universal Century timeline Gundam until you see that one, because it is the basis for a lot that follows. The OVA 08th MS Team, the OVA 0080: War in the Pocket, the series Zeta Gundam, the movie Char's Counterattack, and the OVA Gundam Unicorn, which is the most recent with the sixth episode airing last month, are all great and I would recommend watching in that order.

If you want a standalone Gundam series outside the Universal Century timeline (i.e. a series that has nothing to do with the original Gundam story arc), I recommend Gundam 00. There's also Gundam Seed. And I would recommend Wing before G Gundam, because G Gundam has some really lame mobile suits and tends to stereotype nationalities.

Quite a few Gundam series have not been dubbed in English, so if you don't mind subtitles, there are some more options.

Watching a new anime called Shingeki No Kyojin, 6 episodes have been aired and it's pretty awesome so far.

"Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by Titans. Titans are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source. A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest of giants.

Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a giant in over 100 years. Teenage boy Eren and his foster sister Mikasa witness something horrific as the city walls are destroyed by a super giant (the Colossal Titan) that appears out of thin air. As the smaller Titans flood the city, the two kids watch in horror as their mother is eaten alive. Elen vows that he will murder every single Titan and take revenge for all of mankind."

Shingeki No Kyojin sounds awesome.

I just watched the entire Dragon Ball series, it was 71 gigs! and about 7+ days of content but totally worth it. good, good memories there.

Also Outlaw Star. Great series and very short at 26 episodes. It's comparable to Cowboy Bebop and I'd say heavily influenced but in all the right ways as to not just be a copy. It's its own thing for the most part. It's a really good show though, I watched it as a kid and loved it and it translates well to me now. Maybe I never grew up though

Outlaw Star is one of my favorites as well. I've always loved how they mashed sci-fi with fantasy in such interesting ways. Having an epic quest and good humor helps as well. The only real drawback is that the animation quality can be a little bit all over the place. Still good stuff, though.

I was actually going to point out that Outlaw Star and Cowboy Bebop came out at roughly the same time by the same studio, so the similarities are understandable. However, I went to Wikipedia to do some fact checking and learned that Outlaw Star technically was broadcast first, which surprised me (I thought Cowboy Bebop was first!). The Outlaw Star page has it going from January to June of 1998, whereas Cowboy Bebop had it's troubled run from April to June of the same year before being fully shown from October '98 to April '99. And just to blow your mind a little more, Trigun aired in Japan from April to September of 1998. That means that all three of these shows ran at the same time in Japan, and NONE of them did very well over there. Some year.

wow, what the fuck, mind blown. I didn't know Bebop pulled bad rating and that seems..wrong. I guess they were just to far ahead of the time. Ya I noticed how Outlaw stars narrative seemed really rushed near the end. is that because nobody was watching? damn! Even though it's just wiki I applaud your investigative skills, sir I must dwell on this now.

I say some essential titles if you want violent animes with a good story would be.

Akira, Berserk, Claymore, Elfen Lied, Fate/Zero, Gantz, Hellsing Ultimate, Hokuto no Ken, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Psycho-Pass, Shingeki no Kyojin, and Vampire Hunter D.

I'm a huge anime fan, I've seen over 1,200 hours worth of it. I recommend you watch all of the above in Japanese with subtitles, any other way is just blasphemy.

I'm watching Katekyo Hitman Reborn these days. It's a pretty good anime (and weird, and funny too), practically all characters are likeable, except one. I'm talking about that fucking Hibari Kyoya asshole. He's so fucking annoying, and keeps repeating that "kamikorosu" bullshit. Makes me want to beat him to death. It's just ridiculous that he's the strongest in Tsuna's team.

In my opinion, not at all. Far too often, people make a big deal of liking something that's supposedly "out of character" for someone's demographic or personality or age or gender or whatever, but I think we need to get over ourselves and allow people to like what they like. Arguably, this happens a lot in metal. It's pretty hard not to see some of the crazy, cheesy, over-the-top nonsense, and it doesn't hurt to laugh at ourselves from time to time, but that doesn't mean we can't still like it, warts and all.

Another example: I am a MASSIVE fan of Gundam Wing and consider it to be my favorite series, but I can also tell you that it is rather flawed. The plotting is pretty ridiculous, as characters are flung all over and organizations rise and fall. I could also point out nearly every instance where they cut corners by reusing some bits of animation. I can even recognize the pretty-boy nature of the heroes design, and that it spawned quite a pile of yaoi doujinshi. But none of this doesn't change how I feel about the series and what I like about it (complex story, interesting characters, awesome battles, etc.). I know the series doesn't hold up very well compared to what's being made now, but that doesn't stop me from popping it back in every few years and enjoying it again.

I could also bring up the fact that I thoroughly enjoy Card Captor Sakura, despite the fact that it's one of the most saccharine, cutesy magical girl shows that doesn't have a proper villain (if you think about it). Sure, I could justify it by saying I enjoy the character relationships or the humor or the quality animation (Madhouse at their finest, IMO), but you know what? It IS cute, and whimsical and pleasant, and I enjoy it as much for that as for anything else.

Should you be ashamed? Pfft. Forget about it. Like what you like, as much or as little as you like. I highly doubt anyone around here will judge, and in fact might even have a few encouraging things to say about the series. For my part, while it's been quite some time since I've watched any Sailor Moon, I do seem to remember liking the world-building and mythology they developed around the characters, when they did decide to focus on it around their monster-of-the-week structure. And sometimes, that's enough.

Well I AM the same person who's openly a brony on a metal forum so I wasn't 100% serious with that question
I just sometimes feel like when I'm trying to make friends offline, perhaps I should hold back on mentioning that I'd rather be watching cartoons than whatever it is that people my age normally watch until I know they already like me too much to judge me negatively. I watch tv mostly to help get rid of stress or as background entertainment when I'm knitting, so silly shows that don't require me to think too much are ideal.

I tried to get into Sailor Moon years back, but decided it was too cheesy and girly for me. But this time it actually stuck with me. I think it has good storyline overall, but I could do without all the moping and crying for Tuxedo Mask. Some of the characters are so irritating sometimes, but I guess that's because the aim was to keep them relatable for young girls and also to add humour and opportunities for character development. I only watched the English dubbed Cardcaptors, which I hear they made much less girly than the original. I'm sure elitist anime fans would hate me for saying this, but I usually watch only dubbed anime. My reasons are that I hate the high pitched girly voices that they give to most female characters and because I can't be constantly reading subtitles when I'm knitting (and am too lazy to learn Japanese).

I watched a bit of Polar Bear's Cafe (or Shirokuma Cafe as its originally called) and that's a perfect example of a cartoon that's just cute innocent funny stuff. It's the perfect show to just relax to. There's no real storyline, it just draws you in with awful Japanese puns and talking animals being silly lol

Well, it kind of depends on what you're looking for.

Also, you can do a google image search for "anime recommendations" and get charts like this one or go to Anime Planet, find a show you liked and look for recommendations based on that.

EDIT: I should have noticed earlier, but I saw that earlier in the thread you asked about Gundam. Did you try any, do you want more, or are you looking for something different.
