I don't listen to progressive metal, but I'll second the Liquid Tension Experiment.

Long Distance Calling might be exactly what you're looking for. It's kind of... ehhhh, prog metal or "post-rock". Highly enjoyable though! They've opened for Opeth before, great show, man.

Gordian Knot is a progressive jazz metal group with former Cynic musiscian. Other band is Blotted Science progressive death metal with former Watchtower musician.

I apologize if this has been mentioned before. Good progressive/post-rock stuff from 2010:

Slightly djenty (but not overly so), and really technical.
Oh and the album is available for free (legally).

Hey man, great to see someone else looking for instrumental prog bands! It's such a fine style of metal - You can put it on and feel challenged, moved and intrigued - but still focus on other things because the showmanship of a frontman is not there to get in the way. It's about the music man! haha.

Great thread, I went through to check out some of the bands and to see if I could offer some input.

Already mentioned that I knew of:

Animals As Leaders - great band, now with two albums and a single.
Blotted Science: Awesome stuff, I don't know how they do it.
Indukti: someone mentioned this band....they are worth mentioning again. There are a couple songs with vocals but they are mostly instrumental. Amazing stuff with some Jazz influence on their second album (track: The Ninth Wave)

The only instrumental band I haven't seen mentioned is, Irepress, Check out their first two albums Samus Octology (favorite tracks: Pah No and June Ipper) and Sol Eye Sea I (favorite tracks: Entanglement and Cyette Phiur)

Not to get in a flame war here, I have always respected your musical tastes Baldur - we have the same likes - I just feel Irepress is more 'post' than "prog". Regardless, an excellent band indeed.

i dont know if "Don Caballero" fits the metal term but they do some fucked up instrumental stuff.. gotta check them out

Try "Angel Vivaldi". They play a great instrumental prog / djent. They've been recently added to MetalStorm.
