Apologies if there's already a thread about it. What's your favorite BM releases of this year? Not necessarily a pure BM release.

Mammal by Altar of Plagues
777 Sect(s) and 777 Desanctifaction by Blut Aus Nord
Noregs Vaapen by Taake
Femundsmarka - Eine Reise in drei Kapiteln by Waldgefluester
Dort, wo das alte Böse ruht by Aaskeria
Passion by Anaal Nathrakh
Fallen by Burzum
Diotima by Krallice
Varjoina Kuljemme Kuolleiden Maassa by Moonsorrow
Vlast by N.K.V.D
Kosmonument by Oranssi Pazuzu
Redemption at the Puritan's Hand by Primordial
Heart of Darkness by TOBC
Beyond the Watercolor Sunset, We Feel New Life by Verwustung

Mine would be:
Taake - Noregs Vaapen
Wolves In The Throne Room - Celestial Lineage
Deafheaven - Roads To Judah
Fen - Epoch
Woods Of Desolation - Torn Beyond Reason
Ash Borer - S/T

Wow, that was almost every album I deemed unworthy of some kind of reward.

OK Deafheaven I'm just indifferent to and the likes of Fen is a good band just let down big style by the album mentioned. Taake are just an anachronism these days and Ash Borer are just a bit meh. Woods of Deportation, can't say I've ever given them the time of day.

I have only heard the Deafheaven and WITTR. So I can't comment on the other two, but I found them both to be fairly interesting, mind you they were the first black(ish) metal albums I listened to.

The only thing I'm certain of is that Two Hunters is their best and Black Cascade is their worse (not a bad album though) but all of their other stuff I adore the same

I don't know but for me Black Cascade is intense. The riffs are so good. It's not their best but still, like you said, it's not really bad.

It's not the best of the best for me, but it's definitely some quality material. Then again I love a lot of early black metal.

To me it's like there can't possibly be a BEST black metal album. It's like a catch 22. If a black metal album is best then it's per definition not good. I mean a black metal album shouldn't be good, it should be annoying and hateful and ugly and against everything. It's like someone said "if everyone agree with me then I don't agree with me", that's black metal in a nutshell, it's like a more metal version of punk, against everything. I'm probably not expressing my thoughts in a good way right now but if you try really hard you are probably intelligent enough to understand what I'm trying to say. And for best black metal album of 2011 I would like to say BaN, that music never fail to perplex me and make me want to go back again to try to understand what happened. To add to that I would like to say that there has been many very black black metal albums of 2011 and I hope to hear a lot more in 2012.

Keep the black flame burning!

I think black metal was supposed to "sound bad" when it was in its primal state - when The Black Circle and The Black Legions were composing some of the ugliest forms of raw music. Black metal has since evolved and changed immensely... it's not all about that punk-inspired DIY sense of raw emotion and careless "against the grain" attitude. Some people take a more professional approach and their music sounds just as "proper" as a result.

The question is if "proper" is a good thing in black metal. I respect of course that people think that (and evolution will of course in the long run take the best parts of black metal and incorporate them in as a part in something else) but imo "proper" is a bit of a turn off where black metal is concerned. As a side note I must say that to me punk has nothing to do with the USA (no offense intended).
