My, my, my! Where to begin? Let's start with the obvious. Haken are a progressive metal band from the UK who aren't afraid to try new things as their previous works have shown. The Mountain was their breakthrough album and gathered considerable praise, and for good reason. Their newest opus, Affinity, is an interesting concept as it brings listeners back to the 1980s with throwback samples, sounds, melodies, even the artwork and packaging, marketing materials were all designed with that decade in mind. You know, when chatting involved a corded phone and music was recorded on tape.

What a lame cover art. Can't wait for new Haken material, though!

Each to their own. I think it looks cool. Has a retro feel to it, like some older album from a previous era. The birds flying has been done a bit on album covers - thinking latest Intronaut and a previous Insomnium, and I'm sure there are plenty more. Oh well, most people like birds in flight.

I'm a big fan of this album. It's a wonderful variation in sound and theme for Haken, and it's way more fun that any of Haken's earlier records. The Architect is a masterpiece.

EDIT: I'll be surprised if anything edges this out for prog AOTY, to be honest. I anticipate a lot of people who have been unimpressed with Haken so far jumping aboard.

Not so sure about this one. It's great for sure, but it's not quite as riveting as The Mountain. Perhaps a few more listens...

AWESOME album. Really digging the track '1985'. Very bright and soaring music coupled with the electronics is lovely. What a beautiful record. Definitely a favorite of mine of the year. Every track is wonderful.

I think it was supposed to be a play on the retro Sierra logo

Wow, this is just amazing. These guys never stop improving themselves. Very VERY strong release.

Edit: After a few listen, now I can criticize harshly.

There is a huge Leprous inspiration.
Vocals suck big time. He is trying to be "Einar Solberg" but his voice and vocal techniques have nothing to do with his level. This situation was scratching my mind, but now I'm sure, They should definitely kick the vocalist out of the band.
Lastly, There are a few 'filler' parts on the album, I can feel it. These kind of things didn't exist on The Mountain.

Briefly, They still have so much work to do.

Honestly, I don't think the comparison with Einar Solberg and Leprous extends beyond the Initiate track (on the rest of the album, Jennings is pretty much the same old vocalist). Even then, Haken has worn its influences on their sleeves for all of their career thus far so I don't interpret Leprous emulation on one track to be that big of a deal.Jennings is definitely a vocalist that many people seem to hate, but I think his relaxed approach to vocals suits the band well. That's just my opinion, though. You really think he should be kicked out the band? On Progarchives, this album does not appear to be gathering the ratings of its predecessor so there could be a few people that agree with you.

I know, right? Now he doesn't quite have the divisiveness that James LaBrie has, but I've seen many users on the Internet and on this website who find his vocals awkward. Last Cigarette above and mz come to mind.

Well, he sure is unique, so...that would do it. Personally, I dislike James LaBrie's style, but find Ross Jennings' vocals refreshing.

He is bad. Always has been. The worst part of Haken. I feel no shame saying this - I've been for a long time.

I tend to side with tea[m]ster that he's the worst part of Haken, but I don't find his vocal style objectionable or particularly unique. He's not a flashy singer to me, and that's perfectly okay because he ends up complementing the music quite well. It's interesting that you didn't know a lot of people disliked Jennings We live in our own little prog bubbles sometimes, just as tea[m]ster lives in his own post-metal bubble.

He's one of the few upper-register vocalists who appeal to me so he must be doing something right. All I can say is: "Cockroach King"

I loved most of the songs, except "Red Giant", the beats in first half of the sing is so annoying to me. I see this kind of annoying beat in middle of "The Architect", though it is a great song
