A poster used to have the following as his signature:

"Wolves evolve. If you don't like, don't listen."

Feel free to discuss Ulver through all their various evolutions here.

Haha!

You'll never believe it, my friend; but the poster with that signature was myself! I went by the name JackOTheGreen back then, ofcourse. But it was me none the less. And I still believe it!

Although I reckon Ulver's early material is among some of the finest Black Metal ever recorded (more so than I do albums by Mayhem and Darkthrone) there is no doubt in my mind that the later, more experimental and creative recordings, are better; far superior to those of the early days. "Perdition City" is an album that just can't be topped, categorized or immated by anyone making music today. A truly unique and industrious acheivment.

Cheers.

It's amazing to me how they've managed, even through all of their sonic transformations, to keep the quality of their output very very consistent, especially when they're as prolific as they are. Much like Daibh says above, the first trilogie was merely the basis of the stylistically different amazingness that was yet to come back then. I still can't get over how beautiful some of the Nattens melodies really are, underneath that grim wall of noise... to put it slightly, you need to get pretty much everything they've ever released.

Good to see you back Jack. I also agree that Ulver creates some of the most unique music around. From their ear piercing Black Metal to the minimalistic soundscapes of their movie sountracks, the many faces of Ulver are always beautiful and fresh. I really enjoy listening to them. My favorite album by them is probably their acoustic, neo-folk album 'Kveldsjanger'. I am actually going to start an electronica project that Ulver has inspired me to make. Great stuff.

Ulver is a very unique band. Kristoffer (Garm), the mastermind behind the music, has created such a big variety of music!
I really like Perdition City. Svidd Neger is also a really score. I've listened to Blood Inside as well, but differs a lot from the previous albums (As usual for this band). It's a lot harder to get into. I like Perdition City the most. Themes from William Blake's the Marriage of Heaven & Hell is also an awesome CD!

I agree with the expressed sentiments. If I were forced at gunpoint to choose my five favorite albums across all genres, Ulver would have two on the list - "Bergtatt" and "Perdition City" would both make the cut. And to be honest, they would probably be 2 of the only 3 albums I wouldn't second guess (the other would be "disintegration" by the cure).

That would be the evolution of Ulver into ambient/electronic/avant garde music.

The third track in Bergtatt, "Graablick blev hun vaer" is probably my favorite on the album for it's intensity. And, when I have it on LOUD in the background while doing something else the thunderbolt around the 2:00 minute mark always jolts me out of my chair.

The bass in that song is really cool as well... the guitars are screaming along with that "dental drill" sound riffing, but the bass is loosely and slowly meandering around, barely, it seems, within the framework of the song.

Stumbled across this blurb on their myspace page:

"Ulver's next announced plans include a collaboration with doom/sludge/drone rock/metal band Sunn O)))"

I must say I am intrigued.

If this:

is the cover you are referring to, the album is "Bergtatt", their first.

I really like Ulver because of the atmosphere they create. Their top album IMO is "Bergtatt" which is a really great concept album with an amazing atmosphere. I like Garm in Ulver better than in Arcturus. Also "The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell" is a really good release.

and Garm was involved prominently with both at the time, before departing Arcturus a couple years ago.

Glad to see this topic back on the front page for a day. I've been listening to "Teachings in Silence" (comp of the "silence teachs you how to sing" and "silencing the singing" ep's) a lot as background music... just great stuff.

I am still amazed with Ulver still today. Their music holds so much imagery for me it's like experiencing it for myself. However, every album of their's holds one main feeling for me: that you are cold and alone. From the forzen winters of 'Kveldssanger' to the frozen streets of 'Perdition City.' Everything they have created is emotionally strong for me. I can't really capture my feeling in words.

Anyway, here's a favorite picture of mine. Even this reflects that same feeling.

I talked about them when I was doing a William Blake presentation. Because of their cd "The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell" where they used his words. I never actually listened to it.

Just go into it realizing it is an ambient/electronic album and not a black metal album.

As much as I love Perdition City, it is really not as good as you people make it out to be. Sure, for a band that started out as black metal, this sort of style-shifting is absolutely unprecedented and unattainable by most bands; however, compared to the sort of stuff that is happening in the actual dark-ambient/ambient/avent-electronica etc genres, Perdition City is merely a very good album. Bands like Mouse On Mars, Christian Fennesz etc have been making far superior electronic music for years.

Cool, just amking sure. I wouldn't want you or some narrowminded "Metal or die!" fan trolling the boards to go out and buy it anticipating "Nattens Madrigal II: The Revenge" or something and come back with irate rantings or anything.

Not that I'm implying you are one of the many "Beavii and Buttheads" that show up from time to time here, mind you!

'Perdition City' is an amazing record, as is most of Ulver's work...in my humble opinion.

'Blood Inside' is never out of my player since I aquired it, it's been sometime since I heard 'Bergtatt' though...I shall have to dig that out and give it a spin!

Excellent thread *hails*
