Well usually after Reign In Blood most Slayer fans will say their favorite Slayer album is one of these 2 (if they don't like them more than RIB) so I'd like to see which is preferred.
For me it's definetly Seasons. South Of Heaven is a great album but one thing kind of messed it up for me: the vocals. I think they were the weakest vocals Tom has ever done. Not to say their horrible, and they do fit the music I suppose but they bore me after a while. However the album has alot of awesome songs like South Of Heaven, Spill The Blood, Manditory Suicide...and a personal favorite of mine Behind The Crooked Cross . Seasons however was an AMAZING album from all aspects. Incredible riffs throughout, great vocals and lyrics, flawless drumming...I love it. It's right behind RIB for me. Which do you prefer??

I can't answer that question. they are my two favouite slayer albums.
i remember the first time i heard ghosts of war...i thought my stereo was fucked and started hitting it...cause that fixes it obviously.
Spill the blood, mandatory suicide, hallowed point, spirit in black...too many good songs.

ATM it is South of Heaven for me. I've been listening to Seasons of the Abyss since 7th or 8th grade, and as a result, tracks like War Ensemble and Blood Red no longer do much of anything for me. Seems like after a few hundred too many listens, Seasons just has a bit of a cliche factor to it that South of Heaven doesn't have. Born of Fire is a great song though.

I haven't listened to South of Heaven as much, but it seems like they really continued off the success of Reign in Blood (and Haunting the Chapel IMO), whereas Seasons is in many ways, the beginning of the sound for modern-day Slayer. That in itself is not necessarily a bad thing, as I really enjoyed Divine Intervention, but it just lacks the raw feel of the earlier albums.

South Of Heaven, though they are both awesome. But when I list my alltime fav. Slayer songs, SoH gets more than SitA.

It's not THAT hard, sure South of Heaven was great, but Seasons in the Abyss totally has it beat! Too many classics from that album that I can never get out of my head! The music is all in all better to me on that album..

Seasons In The Abyss? That is Slayer's equivalent of the self-titled Metallica album and Megadeth's Countdown To Extinction so their sell-out album to the metal mainstream. (or at least it was for most of us old people)

Yeah man, youre quite a bit older than me. Isnt it kinda weird that all of their sell-out albums are their 5th albums?

Hi there and welcome!
Don't share your opinion though. I voted South Of Heaven. Don't know why, I just like it a little more in general.

This is an easy decision for me, seeing as South Of Heaven is my fave Slayer album! (although Hell Awaits runs it very close!) South Of Heaven has a very creepy and dark atmosphere that Seasons just cant touch. Dont get me wrong, I think Seasons is very good, but songs like Blood Red (although I love the solo!) and Expendable Youth sound a bit dull. Its funny that South Of Heaven is sandwiched between two albums that most people prefer over it. Yet Ive always prefered South Of Heaven to them both!

I find this opinion quite far-fetched. Totally ridiculous, in fact. I mean, "Seasons In The Abyss" is still extreme music and has nothing in common with the shitty black album (which is commercial garbage targeted at the mainstream and got tons of play on mainstream radio stations) or "Countdown To Extinction" (which was still metal but easy listening for non-metal fans).
Sure, Slayer started to be much more well-known at that time but I don't think they achieved it by selling out like Metallica did or by trying to sell out but not being so successful at it like Megadeth did.

Make a test, if you want. Take people who don't listen to metal and can't stand aggressive music. Make them listen to the black album (they most likely already know it anyway). It's not sure they will like it or not but they won't be frightened by it and say "it's insane music". Do the same with "Countdown To Extinction" now. It will be already a bit harder for them.
Then, make them listen to "Seasons In The Abyss". They will probably look pale and tell you "please stop this crazy music, how can you listen to such insane stuff?".

It's less extreme than "Reign In Blood" or "Hell Awaits" for sure but a sold out album? WTF, really.

"Seasons In The Abyss" is in a completely different league than Metallica's post-AJFA garbage.

Problem I have with "South Of Heaven" is not about songwriting or music. What I dislike about this album is how the vocals suck.
