And this was WAAY before I started listening to black metal, so when I started listening to it, I already felt a connection!

Thanks! I don't think I even heard a single note of metal music when I made him up. It was mostly from what I saw in movies, tv shows, and video games. The bad guy from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars were huge inspirations for sure.

I just went through few pages of this forum and saw almost all users cited from where they got the name. I thought I should give my proof.

I've used this nick for about 13 years. Since my gaming days. I guess I thought it sounded cool when I was 14. Kind of short for "toxic" or something. Just added an extra "x", because it's much more badass when there's several x'es

Its a derivation from Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven.

My wife, Rachel, actually went through high school with a bunch of other girls named Rachel. So, to differentiate herself from the other Rachels, she started to spell her name Raechyl, which she felt was a bit more Celtic-looking (or some such nonsense). When we started going out at 16, I decided I would give my name the same treatment, and thus, Jared became Jaeryd. The 17 comes from the fact that we both like the number 17 for no specific reason, and just "Jaeryd" seemed a bit boring to me.

To be clear, I don't actually spell it that way on anything official. I just use it for usernames and such.
