Well, quite simple really. General discussion relating to Swedish band Katatonia.
And seen as I'm jumping on the band wagon of starting new band-related threads before anyone else, I may aswell have my two cents regarding this one.
Their later albums are better. Both "Viva Emptiness" and "The Great Cold Distance" have far surpassed not only the bands own early material, but that of most other bands making music today.
Here is a link to their official website, where you can find out all sorts of juicy information: http://www.katatonia.com/
The above influences are mentioned in the booklet of BMD's reissue, by the way.
Damn... And I just ordered Katatonia's debut for a week ago and should be here in a couple of days. Now I wish I ordered BDM as well
I sense more melancholy in Du & Jag Döden although that album was released in 2005
So the only melancholic albums by kent those yeard were Verkligen and Isola [the debut is quite happy imo] but yeah... that's a little off-topic.
Damn, i can't wait to get Katatonia's debut... Jonas did such an amazing job with thegrowls and screams. Sad that it was only a one-time thing. You see kids... You have to really practice so your throat will not get fucked up.

Jonas seems to do the vocals on old songs again live, and it was pretty awesome to hear him do Murder in Helsinki. Sounded even better than Åkerfeldt, IMO.
Can you explain to me what shoegaze is? I understand the term loosely, but if you could elaborate a bit, that would be great.
Btw, I must have missed your birthday, so allow me to say "HAPPY B-DAY!!!" a few days late.
Shoegaze has always been for me one of the genres that you can easily recognize in the sound of the band, but it's such a pain in the ass to explain it with words since it feels weird [just like explaining to someone what's drone]...
So yeah, acording to my ears [since I believe someone else could give you a totally different answer (and probably better)] Shoegaze feels like listening to pop with lots of distorsion, yeah... that's not really specific but I always felt that way.
There's a lot of guitarr effects, droning riffs and "the wall of sound" from the noisy guitars, the vocals are usually treated as another instrument since they are mostly underneath the riffs, sometimes you can't make out what the vocalist is saying... The always sounded "sweet" or very emotive to me. Then again in DO you can easily hear the vocals but the shoegaze influence it's more in the guitars .P
A fair amount of shoegaze bands use drum machines as far as I know, but there are also many that use live drums
Shoegaze you can clearly hear in the metal scene in DO, Alcest, Amesoeurs, Have a Nice Life, Jesu [as far as I know] and others...
I hope that can help you a little bit, sorry if I can't make a better explanation, and thanks for the greetings
OK, thanks. I kinda understant it more now. Kinda. Ever heard of shoegaze Black Metal? There is a one-man band called Heretoir that seems to be able to mix it quite good. My fav song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvlD_cw6Lvs&feature=PlayList&p=52DA115D7F4D74AF&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=22
EDIT: The best part is from 1:00 and onward.
Some bands that I put like Alcest, Amesoeurs and Have A Nice Life make some Metalgaze with some black around it so yeah... I know the scene a little bit... Although I'm aware that the Black metal influeces aren't that big anyway.
That was a wonderful song btw and yes... the shoegaze influeces are clear. Very good.. .I shall check it out.
And just for the sake of being on topic:
I just recieved my copy of Dance Of December Song with the ep Jhva Elohim Meth as bonus tracks...
Fucking sweet... I'm gonna listen to it this weekend

"Day And Then The Shade's" music video is a very bad copy of "Weak And Powerless's" music video by "A Perfect Circle". the atmosphere of clip reminds me bad black metal clips.

Yep, same over here. Seen them twice this year and both times he has handled the vocals - and in such an amazing fashion as well.

I think that video has got to be one of the crappiest ever.... Possibly not counting some no budget BM videos....

To be honest there isn't one in particular in my opinion. Probably everyone has his or her favorite one ofcourse (mine would be 'The Great Cold Distance' and 'Last Fair Deal Gone Down)', but my advice would just to start at the beginning, and go through their entire discography. Just to be sure you won't miss out on any goodies they got in there. It's worth it. Don't rush it though, let the albums soak in one by one.
Another whining bitch it seems.
Where else would you put them? They sure as hell aren't doom. AT least there isa hint of gothic in their music.
Seriously Marcel "Another whining bitch it seems"? what the fuck are you trying to pull here? if there is one whinny big bitch it's you, hell one needs to look only at your sig. Not to mention the bitch fest you threw in the shoutbox a while ago just because a guy voted Candlemass and didn't listen to the other candidates.
Well since you asked, I'll answer Alternative Metal. Since they created their own branch of Depressive rock. only slightly more heavier.
Brave Murder Day is almost an absolute perfect album in my opinion. It's not long, but it's powerful, growl vocals are amazing, lyrics equally aren't frequent but have deep meaning (to me at least) and having a soft vocals song with catchy mesmerising sounds in the middle of the album nicely seperates the other tracks.
Saying that, I also love most of their other albums, with Jonas Renkse's vocals, even though you can't really compare with the older albums due to them being different styles, there's some amazing tracks split amongst all the other albums.
I'm going to see them in London on the 11th along with Swallow The Sun... can't wait!

I come from Australia and I have to say that the music that those in Europe have access to or are even aware of is amazing. I'm yet to find somebody here who has so much as HEARD of Katatonia. I LOVE THIS BAND! KATATONIA seem to come out with one great song after another - some of them are truly amazing. I would love to see this band live!!
PERSONAL FAVOURITES:
*ASHEN (heavenly to listen to through good speakers!!)
*JULY
*COLD WAYS
*SWEET NURSE
*THE FUTURE OF SPEECH
...and there are many more. Good to read other people's comments here; good to know that others also acknowledge and appreciate awesome music. I checked out Jonas in a youtube interview and he (and his fellow band members) seem like genuine nice guys. A pity more locals don't know about this fabulous band,

Isn't it great when you think you've found an album as close to perfectionism as possible! Me, I play Katatonia a great deal, especially while I'm driving. I think it would be wonderful to see Katatonia live! Their melodies are so often just so good; and I bet it would be wonderful to see them live. One thing I do so like about Jonas is that he isn't into glitz and glamour, frilly trimmings, that kind of thing. He comes across as a fairly ordinary man with no airs or graces who just happens to make music of a high quality.:) And that's nice.
Saw them live at Tuska (for the fourth time). Mostly, it was just the same-old, boring songs from the latest two albums. Then, predictably, Ghost Of The Sun and Right Into The Bliss which nonetheless got me a little excited. And then they played I Break, hell yes! Little did I expect what came next: SWEET NURSE, HOLY SHIT! One of my favorite Katatonia songs ever, definetely in the top 5, and I'd never heard it live. I was extatic, and ready to call it a day and head off to wait for Church Of Misery. But then they did Nephilim, which sounded really good.
So all in all, the show was a pleasant surprise. Katatonia tend to have boring sets and bad live performances, so I wasn't expecting much. But Sweet Nurse, just... yes. Made my day.
So this girl I'm really into tells me Katatonia's Night Is the New Day reminds her of me. Does this mean I'm being friendzoned? Or does she secretly think I'm gay even though I've blatantly expressed otherwise.
For the record, this is the song that reminds her of me the most. :/

It means she wants to do things with you at night, but she fears you may be impotent (idle blood = blood not reaching the correct area).
So either I have ED or I'm a cure for a sleeping disorder.
Close enough.
I dunno what to tell you dude, that song was hella gay... Damn, I've never listened to that album and this song really doesn't make me feel interested in checking more songs.
