Buying by faith or by listening to the album first?

I wanted to know if people also buy, like me, albums by trusting a band. There are some bands of whom I have more than trust of the high quality of their works as to go to the store and buy their albums right away. As a matter of fact, I am thinking of going to the store and picking Slayer's new album (after their EP of course) without any hesitation. Not only for a new release of Slayer I would do that, but for several other bands which I perceived as if they have a "winning formula" that does not allow them to put a record that can be considered less than good.

Also, at times I go with the opinions of other Metalheads and I venture myself into buying albums of genres that I like very much. Of course, I need to see that this band is praised a lot by the people liking them and that they give reasons for liking them so much. Then I try to listen to some songs from the band and if they are good I decide to buy the album. Up until now this strategy hasn't failed me.

Then, there are those who have to listen to the whole album before deciding to spend any money in them.

I would say that I do a little of all the strategies I mentioned above. It all depends of the circumstances. None, of them has failed me yet, except for one time in which I bought this crappy album for this crappy band but let us forget that now. lol

Now, how do you decide to buy albums? Do you go blindly to the store to buy them or are you really cautious in what you spend your money?

Well, there's many people that i know that buy first and after liste, the thread is that sometimes the album is bad and you must accpet it as a good album because you don't listen to it first...

For me, I generally research. I don't have much money to spend on CD's every month, and so I don't want to buy albums that I probably won't like. Blind faith (i.e. buying a band I've never heard before, let alone heard any of their music) is something I don't really do. I may buy an album on a recommendation of a friend or online, but I wouldn't take a chance like that, mainly because there will always be a record of a band I DO know to buy in the store

So, I would normally use Metal Archives or something similar to find out about the band, or borrow a CD off a friend. There are times when I buy albums without hearing anything on them, because I trust the band (Iron Maiden, Dark Tranquillity). Sometimes I use BitLord to preview albums, but if I don't like it, I delete it.

Sometimes by faith and sometimes by listening first. It depends on the band and how much I trust this band. For example I buy Nightwish, After Forever or Symphony X albums without listening to them until I've already bought them. The same happened with Metallica's St. Anger, but I was really disappointed when listened to that album. Anyway, when it's a compilation or a live album, I usually buy it without listening it before.

I never buy by faith unless I'm checking out a new band for the first time. If it's a band I've already heard alot of albums from before I'll listen to it first not because I don't trust them but I probably won't wait untill the release date to hear the album.

If there's something I have a feeling i'd enjoy (usually determined by these forums, and others..) - I just buy it. Rarely have I been disappointed when doing this, so thats how i'll continue most likely.

I prefer to know what I'm spending my money on, unless it is a band I already know and love, then I'll buy it out of loyalty and trust. Now my guitar player, he buys on faith quite a bit (with bands he's never heard of before seeing their album in the store or online) and is actually pleasantly surprised most of the time. It's how we discovered Three Inches of Blood.

Well, sometimes I just buy without having heard anything by the band whatsoever. I remember buying a Windir album, never having heard anything by Windir, just because I had heard a lot about them and it was all good. I had never heard Ulver, and I ordered 'Nattens Madrigal' on a whim. In fact, I've had awesome luck with spur-of-the-moment purchases. Today, I went to the city, with intentions of buying Moonsorrow's latest album (that's a band that I'd buy on faith; having said that I have already heard the new album and do like it), but ended up getting Behemoth's 'Demigod' and Warlock's 'True As Steel'. I already had 'Demigod' downloaded through recommendations, but I had never heard Warlock before (excluding Doro Pesch's cover of 'Breaking the Law') and it was really fun music! Most of the time though, albums that I buy are those that I've downloaded earlier and would like to own legitimately. It varies, depending on my mood, I suppose.

I listen to the album before I bu it, I don't want to spend my money on some bad or mediocre album and then to hear some killer release. I never bought some albums of my favorite bands, For example Megadeth's Risk or Children Of Bodom Are You Dead Yet, I don't want to buy albums I don't like only because I like the band. But if I download some album and it is awesome I will surely bought it....

If it's a new band then I hunt down mp3's or samples first as I have purchase way to many albums with only 3 good songs on it to want to spend my hard earned cash on. I have had many a friend had me a disc with some new music on it to try and if I liked what I hear then I buy the cd's. If not then it hits the shelf never to be seen again...like Playtapus...that is so lost on the shelf I can't even find it to do a spell check. At best 2 decent songs and the rest of the cd sucked hard. the same with Kings X...at best a good bar band and nothing more yet people raved it...repetitive 3 cord junk. I was so glad I listened to a cassette a friend made me first before I went out and bought.

For me to buy with blind faith you have to be a tried and true great band!

listen to "the force" within your heart, and THAT will surely tell you what path to advance through on the quest of buying "honorable" music...
May wisdom guide you and may your hert be alive with serenity as your mind unfolds the task of CHOOSING THE RIGHT ALBUM to later exploid and review as if it were some sort of obligation.

...but have fun in the process

I used to buy off faith, and I used to have really good luck with it too, just buying an album because it looked cool, thats how I discovered great bands like Wolf, Venom and Dragonlord. But in september I just had a big string of bad luck, I used to buy off the album art and the names of songs (the track titles I could usually tell what kind of music it is) but then I got this CD with a really cool cover called '100 demons' and its terrible hardcore type band. That happened to me about 3 or 4 more times before I finally discovered what MySpace is good for (I refuse to download).

If a band is highly recommended to me, I usually try and listen first, but when its a band that I love, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, etc, I trust them to put out quality material.

Ive learned my lesson with buying albums on faith....because the past few years have delivered a number of shockers. So thats why I always download albums first. Im not shy to say that I download because how else will I get to hear it? Its not like Africa has super cd stores with tons of metal so spending $35 on importing an album that sucks is kinda stupid.

Anyway back on topic, I cant really remember the last time I just bought an album before hearing it. I suppose the only album I would risk buying will be "Time" from Wintersun, because i know that going to be a fuckin masterpiece. Jari can do no wrong

I usually buy from 3 to 10 albums per month. When some of my favorite artists albums gets released, i usually just buy cd without listening any teasers/promos etc. The satisfaction is usually much better after i get the real cd in my hans. For the bands i dont know that well and which have got good reviews in magazines etc; i usually download few of their songs and do a decission then.

I always buy on faith. I love the surprise of hearing a brand new CD I haven't heard before! I even avoid listening to samples, because I like the surprise element so much. With bands I love, I never hesitate. And even with certain sub-genres, I buy albums on faith from bands I hadn't heard before. For example, there is very little in the folk and viking metal genres that I haven't liked, so any time I hear of a well-praised band in one of those genres I just buy the CD. I have only very rarely been disappointed. And if I don't like the CD after all, I can usually just re-sell it to my local used CD store so it's not much of a loss.

Sometimes I even buy on faith based on cover art; in fact that is how I discovered folk metal in the first place! I was in a CD store and I happened to see Finntroll's Nattfodd and Cruachan's The Middle Kingdom, and I thought WOW that's such awesome cover art... so I bought them both on a whim.. and I have been a folk metal addict ever since

Hell no, I'd rather listen to the CD first because I cant afford to buy shitty albums. And even if its a band I like, I cant gaurantee my money's worth if there are other stuff Im interested other than that album at the store.

I first download album or listen music on myspace and then buy it if it's good and if I am not short with money. I actually never buy albums by faith nowdays... When I was getting into metal I did, but now I don't do this anymore.

I'm cursed, because if i found a good album for a band, I try to get its whole catalog. For example, I own every Therion full-lenght album, so if they release a crappy album (wich is impossible :-)) I must have to buy it.
But I think twice if the album features less than 6 tracks, in that cases, get a downloaded copy since the samples aren't enough for me. If I like, I run to the store, if I don't, I erase it.

Yea I recently bought a cd without listening or even hearing of the band before, although it was marked "Good Fast Black Metal". The bands called BELEF and while the album is just what it was labeled as the album drags pretty quickly. There are some decent riffs, but this album lacks originality as well as variety & and some solo's wouldn't hurt either. So I don't believe I'll be buying out of faith anytime soon.

I just download some songs from an album to see if they're any good, if they are then i consider buying the album. I can't risk buying any bad albums because I have practicly no money, so I check some of the content first .
