‘Gentle brutality’ is quite a fitting description for a whole range of metal sub-genres that equally feature fervent extremity and touching beauty. The band that has made Gentle Brutality, Massen, incorporate elements from a few of these sub-genres.

Once going by the name Massenhinrichtung, Belarussian-born/Berlin-based six-piece Massen rebranded themselves in 2020 upon joining Apostasy Records. While the name change seems to have been triggered at least partially due to joining this label, there was a notable stylistic divide between Massenhinrichtung and 2021’s Contraesthetic, their debut under their new name. The group started off as a pagan-tinged black metal group, but while their releases under the old moniker exhibited a certain degree of refinement and evolution towards a less raw and more melody-conscious sound, Contraesthetic represented a significant stylistic reconfiguration, one that has been furthered on Gentle Brutality.

Contraesthetic was nominated in meloblack in the 2021 Metal Storm Awards; this partially reflected their updated sound, but there were also folk, melodeath and prog elements on the record, and the now-prominent role of vocalist/violinist Karalina Nasko really shaped the band’s sound when compared with her Massenhinrichtung debut on Апошняя Птушка Надзеi (The Last Bird Of Hope). Gentle Brutality takes things further; there are substantial black metal remnants still present, which can be encountered as early as the first minute of opening track “Energy System” with a sharp-edged blasting assault. Black metal is also present to varying degrees in melodic and even non-melodic forms on the likes of “Disgusted” and “Our Melody Is Not Dead”, but the majority of the album is detached from this genre.

In its place, one can encounter melodeath, which takes over not long after that initial blackened outburst on “Energy System” to add a touch of melancholia. Additionally, there are outbursts of more straight aggressive death metal (see the opening of “Corps De Ballet” for an example), while the regularly full-pelt drumming also takes a more punky form in moments, such as in parts of “Our Melody Is Not Dead”. At the other end of the spectrum, the melody from the violin and clean vocals adds regular brightness to the record; at times, it feels somewhat folk-influenced, particularly in the latter stages of album highlight “Disgusted”, while “Dym Idzie (Smoke Is Going To The Sky)” has the kind of delicate aura that Heretoir are capable of. Massen also dial down the intensity on “Together Alone”, which features a lot of spacious clean tones filling out the background behind Nasko’s tender singing.

In terms of reference points for newcomers, the black metal-tinged dual-vocal plus violin combo has a touch of A Forest Of Stars to it, although Massen are less expansive and esoteric. “Throwing Of Stones”, with its rich textures and mixture of extreme and melodic riffs, reminds me somewhat of In Vain. Also, while the lyrics are in Belarussian, there’s a certain something to the dramatic closing minutes of “Disgusted” that makes me feel that perhaps it could fit into an Orphaned Land song. While Massen are perhaps less overtly prog than those two bands, some of the more complex song structures, such as on “Energy System” and “Askoma (Sorethroat)” (which is also notable for its industrial electronic introduction) do indicate a prog-metal influence on the group.

Gentle Brutality is a solid evolution from the group’s debut, which was already an advancement on what came before; the apparent contradiction in the album title is justified by the range of intensities explored across this record, and if Massen continue to be this adventurous going forward, who knows what they may be able to accomplish.

What a lame name change. Downgrading from "mass execution" to just "mass" (or, perhaps, interpretable as "masses")

I think the name change is good actually. Massenhinrichtung is a real tongue twister for anyone who doesn't speak German and they've steered away from the war theme of Закон Зброі (The Order Of Force). I don't think "Mass Execution" as a band name is fitting for the type of music they play now.

You're the second Swede to believe that, and you're right that the former name doesn't fit the band anymore. Nevertheless, I'm with F3ynman, because 'Massen' sounds painfully awkward and it doesn't work at all in German. Seriously, they couldn't have picked a worse moniker.

Imagine if Helloween were tired of their pumpkin image, Dave Mustaine's delusions of grandeur were a little more pronounced, Sakis Tolis would be obsessed with the idea of headlining a club tour through Vatican City, and Suicidal Tendencies were longing for more radio airplay. I think we can all agree that 'Hello', 'Mega', 'Christ' and 'Tendencies' wouldn't be particularly good names for these new incarnations. But 'Massen' is even worse because it's grammatically incorrect.

That said, this is a very fair and well-founded review. Special cheers for the In Vain reference. I was wondering the exact same thing about “Throwing The Stones”, but couldn’t put my finger on it. The name of the Norwegians just didn't come to mind.

What is grammatically incorrect about it? You can e.g. say "Die Zuschauer kamen in Massen.", right?

But what if they were called, Ween, Deth, Rotting and Suicidal? I would definitely listen to Ween
Jokes aside, I get your point but for all the non German speakers 'massen' probably doesn't mean anything in their native languages. It's not a Swedish word for instance. But to take a Swedish example that sounds similar, Messa is slang for 'texting' or more precisely to send a text message from your phone. I still don't have a problem with that band name. And as a funnier example there's an 80's heavy metal band named Tröjan (Trojan) but the umlaut makes the name mean 'The Sweater' in Swedish which makes it sound very stupid Also the members of Massen are originally Belarusian so maybe they don't see the problem you and F3ynman do as Germans and just shortened the name and removed 'hinrichtung' without any thoughts about it sounding strange (for Germans). But that's just a guess as good as any.

Either way it's a very good album and I really enjoy it. Recommended.

Sure. And 'In Massen' would actually be a pretty cool band name, I think. But it's just 'Massen' without a preposition and without an article. That doesn't really work in German with declined nouns.

I am with you, it does sound a bit strange. It is being used though. See e.g. the Wiki entry about it, where the plural form without preposition pops up several times (spam alert: in German):

Greatyr
I've come here to read some comments about the album and had a German grammar lesson!
Although, this is a very good play! The total death metal intro, or Sepultura-ish riffs, of "Throwing Stone" becoming a full pagan black metal so smoothly is the highlight! Cheers and long live to them!

You failed to mention that "Energy System" could be up for song of they year, which it is xD Also I feel like you described the sound but not whether you were enjoying yourself listening to the sound if that makes sense? Hopefully this doesn't come off too assholey, sorry haha

That's fair enough; reading it back, it's true that the only times I really comment on quality in this review are calling it a 'solid evolution' and giving it a high score - not sure what happened with this one, I feel like I usually manage to give an indication of what I enjoy in an album in my reviews. Tbh, I'd say it was a pretty good album that I enjoyed a fair amount when spinning it during the review process, but it's also not one that I felt much inclination to revisit after writing the review

I hear you, that happens to me as well (not the reviewing process though, I've not tried my luck thus far) when I'm really into a record and then other stuff comes along and I don't revisit it. Not enough time in the day for this shit😅
