Well, they have set the bar so high that it's almost impossible not to think they can do great. I blame them

Meh. Watershed almost completely killed my interest in this band. If they would go back and focus more on atmosphere like they used to as opposed to technicality, maybe I would get excited about it.

It will be interesting to see what they do on this album. Will they go back to the more progressive style or continue down the road they've been on? Guess we'll have to wait and see either way I'm sure I'll find myself enjoying it.

Jens Bogren is engineering, Steven Wilson is mixing... well, I'm a asshole to say this but it's simply true and it can't be avoided... Attention to every Opeth fan, guess who's producing?? It's Kanye West!!! I don't know what to say, it's like S.Harris producing the next Rihanna album?! WTF? I'm sure you don't belive your eyes and so do I... But I assure you it's true...

It doesn't surprise me. Opeth are about as mainstream as Metallica these days. Everyone and their dog has a copy of Blackwater Park and a few band t-shirts.
Now if he were to produce a Mournful Congregation album I think I'd bloody well shoot up the place. The place being whatever heavily populated area I'm in at the time.

Opeth are about as mainstream as Metallica these days.
Surely not as popular as Metallica. But, mainstream and accessible? Surely. I think everyone I know in real life who likes Opeth is not a metalhead.
Perhaps I get a false impression. I never cared at all for Opeth, as everything I heard from this band was extremely boring.

C'mon, new details already! Steven Wilson mentioned a few days ago that he's finished mixing the 'incredible new Opeth album'. Which means, it's only a matter of time before we get tracklistings and artwork and what not.

This. Although, based off your vote for Damnation, it looks like you hated it. I thought that album was super atmosphere-focused... which is why *I* love it.
Oh and this probably wouldn't be a popular idea, but I'd be pretty happy if Opeth released an album full of songs like Burden. It would be pretty sexy-fresh if you ask me.

Part of what attracts (or attracted) me about Opeth was the variation. Damnation had absolutely none. It was a bit of a borefest.

I can understand that. It does seem like one big song (which is why I think it arguably stays soothing). It seems they had one idea... and then just rolled with that one idea the whole album.

Weird... I really like Damnation but Burden is such a MEH song it's unbelievable, the keyboard solo is chessy as hell too.

Eh, to each his own, I suppose. The keyboard solo is my favorite part of the song. Very blues-rock inspired. I found it fantastic and very fitting. The whole song packs a big *sincere*-sounding emotional punch, I think. Something a good amount of the rest of the album lacks.
But, uh... I think we are digressing. This thread is about their new album, no?
