Biography
Hailing from Ballarat in rural Victoria, Australia, Ebonivory delivered an unparalleled mosaic of raw emotion, complex rhythmic devices, and prismatic melody.
Composer and multi-instrumentalist Powlett formed Ebonivory in 2014, later joined by long-time musical collaborators and childhood friends Jake Ewings (guitar), Louis Edwards (guitar, backing vocals), Connor McMillan (bass, backing vocals), and David Parkes (drums, percussion).
Their early releases - Ebonivory I - EP (2014), The Only Constant (2015), Ebonivory II - EP (2016) - became Australian progressive cult-classics; employing a unique distillation of progressive metal, alternative rock, post-hardcore, and modern punk. An amalgamation which had evolved into becoming the band's signature sound.
The uber-talented progressive rock prodigies unleashed their highly anticipated new album The Long Dream I worldwide on June 5th 2020, via Wild Thing Records. The Long Dream I is the first of a two-part concept album, taking the form of scattered memories from a very distant but familiar life, re-living a fever-dream of youth through the lens of lessons learned, and words unsaid. Ebonivory delivered a vision that is pure and unrestrained by musical conformity, often leaving the listener nostalgic, enraged, and paralysed within the span of seconds. Entirely-self produced, mastered by Forrester Savell (Karnivool), and led by singer Charlie Powlett's emotionally powerful delivery, every song presents a completely unique reimagining of what progressive music is capable of; shifting from the punk-inspired moments of 'Hanmer Street' into the gritty, futuristic soundscapes of 'Explosions After Dark', and transcendental riffs and passages of Introvection. All the while effortlessly maintaining cohesive melodic bonds, resembling a sequence of dreams.
Ebonivory's whirlwind performance at Australia's PROGFEST festival in 2019, alongside international heavyweights The Ocean, Monuments and Skyharbor, led to the band to ink management and label deals with Wild Thing Presents, and Wild Thing Records respectively. The group then embarked on several extensive tours of Australia, including supporting Dead Letter Circus and Circles nationally. In sync with their heavy touring schedule, the band released singles 'Patting The Black Dog' and 'Tales of Termina' to international acclaim, landing coverage with PROG Magazine (UK), Metal Sucks (USA), Triple J Radio - "The Racket" (AUS), Rage - ABC TV (AUS), and Spotify "Homegrown + Heavy" and "Prog Metal Essentials" playlists - with earlier single 'Persist' added to the "Progressive Metal" Spotify playlist, garnering hundreds of thousands of streams.
Just as the band was gaining serious momentum, it all came to a grinding halt, when in September 2020, following “serious allegations” made against lead vocalist Charlie Powlett, it was announced that the other four members would leave the band, who had also been dropped by their label Wild Thing Records. A statement was made by the label, and a Facebook post made by Powlett acknowledging the decison of the label to terminate all activity with the band and addressed the immediate department of his bandmates and actions Powlett would take to reflect on his behaviours and focus on his personal issues.
As of 2020, Ebonivory is on indefinite hiatus, with founder Charlie Powlett the lone-remaining member.
