What genres out there do you find completely useless? I think the whole point of this thread back in the old MS was not coming out and saying what you hate about current genres. The point was to talk about sub-genre names that people just make up due to lyrical content, image, etc...

I would say glam metal!!!!!!!! lol

its basically like heavy metal but with a little glitter on top its like alice cooper & twisted sister for example instead of just singing they do magic tricks & acting etc while performing live!!!!!!!!

Alice Cooper is the father of Shock Rock and has nothing to do with Glam Metal. The fact that a bande does a perfomance on stage instead of just play song after song, for me its a good thing. What bothers most about Glam Metal is the fact that they dreesed as women to proove their manhood????,The lyrical themes that werte cheesy to the max and songwritting that made Metal look like music for fags.

Im agreeing with that statement.

Ok, here it is:
Hair Metal - hu? just because they have long hair?! it's rock music, period.
Glam Metal - Hard Rock to Pop Rock, it's just a visual thing but doesn't affect the music
Shock Rock - again, it's rock with a certain visual show..... it's visual, not musical
Viking Metal - because they tell stories about...... err...... vikings and that sort of stuff. So, if they talk about ducks, are they going to call it Duck Metal?? Quaaaackk!! ........ chugga, chugga..... quaackk!! It's either heavy metal or power metal
Epic Metal - It's Heavy Metal, Power Metal or Symphonic Metal, longer songs maybe
Grind Core - It's Extreme Metal who really cares about what the lyrics say? if you understand 2 words in the same sentence then you have a very good ear for this kind of...... singing?
Nu Metal - New?..... New???? it's 2011 and they still call it, New(Nu)?? New was back in 1998-2000.......call it melodic thrash, melodic alternative, melodic extreme, rap metal, whatever you think it really defines it's musical approach, but NOT nu metal..... it's not NEW anymore!

Hipster metal, I really don't get that term. It's given to stoner/sludge bands usually. Maybe there's a difference between it, I don't hear it.

And also pretty much any genre that's labelled for their lyrics. Like christian metal, pornogrind, unblack metal. national socialist black metal, etc.

Although for Viking metal I don't mind. It's actually up for debate on if it's just about the lyrics. I do believe their is a playing style for it and it's not just metal songs about vikings. Personally most of the viking metal I've heard just sounds like folk metal, melodic death metal or extreme power metal to me, but I don't listen to a lot of it. I wouldn't consider Amon Amarth for example, a viking metal band as the viking themes don't go much further than the lyrics for them.

Extreme power metal, Eww... I'm pretty sure it's only this site that ever uses the term for a few melodic death metal bands the use keyboards but think it's not br00tel enough or something. I dunno! I just don't like it. I mean, bands like Wintersun and COB are labeled this and bands with some the same amount of power metal influences like Into Eternity and Mercenary are not? Lets not play favorites with our stupid genre names.

Does anyone here think that calling christian black metal bands "unblack" metal is stupid?

YES

Yes indeed! I've always thought of Black Metal as a genre in the same way that Thrash Metal is for example in that it represents a certain type of music and not a specific belief system.

Exactly! Christian metal?? why? because of the lyrics? their beliefs? remember that we're talking about the MUSIC.... only the MUSIC. It's rock, metal, thrash, etc. regardless of the lyrics.

I totally agree. No other style is named by their lyrics... Calling christian bands White Metal or something alike is stupid. It's like dissociating metal in two opposite parts, the good and the evil, because of the musicians beliefs, while we use the genres to define the sounding of the band.

Well, now answering the topic. Most of the styles' names are stupid. Metal itself for instance...

IMO the subgenres should be called Steel Metal, Iron Metal , Aluminum Metal, Copper Metal, etc... It'd make a lot of more sense.
------

I haven't thought of it before but I see that most names end up saying that genre is heavy or brings evil feelings in it's sounding or in it's lyrics. But it's impossible to know the music only by it's styles' name.

Lol, would be funny if they actually used those names for sub genres.
Most of the current sub genres do give the listener an idea of what they are getting into. It's not just random names.

Evolution of the term metal
You had the term rock being used before the term metal originated. They started calling heavier bands, heavy rock and hard rock. But that just didn't do it for people. They wanted something else. So whats harder than a rock, more powerful and stronger? Metal!
So now everyone is happy with the new term, they get on with the music and their lifes. But now newer heavier sounding bands start evolving. They don't sound like the old metal bands, so people are wondering whether these guys are still metal or something else. And so you have the origin of all these little sub genres

The Wii seems like a progressive move for gaming, and if I'm correct the 3DS is the first 3-D handheld system, which would qualify as progressive.

Heh maybe you're right. like...metal is harder than rock indeed. But I just can't see it in the rest..

Besides, I've heard that the "heavy metal" term ( and "metal" along with it ) came from Black Sabbath. Ozzy said that they were on a TV program when this presenter, who had hated their music, said they sounded like "heavy metal" clashing. From this day on people started calling "heavy metal" a new music genre and the name caught on. Also, Ozzy says he doesn't agree with it.

But what I see is that some people use "heavy metal" to name a subgenre of metal, while others name "heavy metal" as the group of all metal. It makes me confused.

Hmmm... I don't really agree here. Core is just a suffix from hardcore and there's nothing wrong with that until people start putting it everywhere but that's not the suffix-fault... I can clearly see how people would think metal is kind of a dumb name that people put everywhere.

Still... -core will NEVER beat Post... that one is in a whole different league.

Marcel, I was talking about a genre of altrock called Slowcore, it has nothing to do with metalcore That genre sounds most like shoegaze minus the layered guitars and it has NO relation to hardcore whatsoever, which is why I don't see a reason to label it -core.
