Hey guys, so I'm really into thrash metal, and I've been looking for some old-school death metal, along the lines of Death, Master, Morbid Angel, etc.

Just wondering if you can recommend anything, thanks.

The Red In The Sky Is Ours is great. But Slaughter Of The Soul is totally bland and watered down. I consider it one of the most, if not most, overrated albums in the history of metal. It's for people who actually can't enjoy proper death metal. SotS is plastic pretend dm lacking any bite or atmosphere whatsoever.

I think that statement applies to a lot of the Gothenburg bands, They are not "Melodic Death Metal" in the literal sense of the word... They are melodic no doubt but I would not consider them death metal or group them in with bands like Entombed or Dismember who can be melodic (mostly with their guitar solos) and play Death Metal, If you know what I mean.

I totally understand and know what you're saying. Even Dark Tranquillity doesn't play melodic death metal in that sense and they are the first to agree on that. Eucharist and Desultory at least play death metal which is melodic so does the Finnish Demigod.

I still don't understand how the Gothenburg (and other bands playing that style) got mislabelled as death metal when they have almost nothing to do with dm. Case here being Arch Enemy. Only thing deathish there are those lame grunts by their marketing trick Angela.
Musically nothing death metal in those sorts of bands at all.

I cannot tell you the amount of times I have been relentlessly mocked by my friends for saying basically what you have just said, I think a lot of people must think this way about it. Harsh Vocals + Melodic Riffs/Leads = Must be Melodic Death Metal (which is incorrect IMO) , A lot of the things that makes Death Metal what it is are ignored with the gothenburg bands (Atmosphere, Song Structure etc). Thanks mate for proving to me im not totally nuts .

yeah also tuning of guitar and bass.
There used to be a lot more sane people like the two of us around here on MS that would agree with us (Valan, Azidahak and some others) but unfortunately they aren't around any more.
But ask most people my age that so the rise of true death metal and all and 9 out of 10 would agree with us.
For example In Flames is just a sped up and more brutal Iron Maiden musically on Jester's Race and such.
So here in this case the majority is bonkers and the vast vast vast minority is sane.

Sorry for the long quote but I need to reply to the whole discussion just saying:
I totally agree with you guys!!!
I'm not really Marcel's age but I saw the rise of true death metal.
In 1990 and 1991 there were Morbid Angel, Death, Entombed, Autopsy, Bolt Thrower, Morgoth, Obituary etc.
We listened also to Carcass, Napalm Death and Terrorizer. (Not death metal really, but you get the point)
These were the death metal bands who's stuff was available over here.
No sign from In Flames or At The Gates or Dark Tranquillity.
Not that they didn't exist at that time, but at that moment nobody was interested or didn't know them: the only death metal bands known to mankind (over here) were the ones I mentioned plus Cannibal Corpse, Pestilence, Gorefest, Nocturnus and a couple more. THAT was death metal.
I don't get the term "melodic death metal": you can play death metal with melody but it stays death f#cking metal!
Then someone says: hey, I've listened to a sissy version of death metal and we call it melodic death metal. That alone almost killed the entire death metal movement. or not.
Btw I like The Red In THe Sky Is Ours a lot

The best thing about old school death metal was i was able to get virtually all the Earache releases on a military base in an island of the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

but as with Dizzy above, from my perspective it was the same basic bands. Morbid Angel, Death, Entombed, Bolt Thrower, Carcass, Napalm Death (who were DM around '91 with "Harmony Corruption"), Amon (before the name changes), Pestilence, yada yada.

i just think of it as death metal.

great stuff.

never got into the In Flames/At The Gates stuff then, and only a couple years ago did i check out Dark Tranquility. Liked Character, but doesn't seem remotely deathy to me.

and i'll take the old stuff over the crystal produced, polished, technical stuff i hear nowadays. might sound good. might have impressive riffs, but is just missing something which made the initial volley of bands so special.

and of course

Asphyx. Especially their demos and first two full lengths and mini as well as comeback album Death... The Brutal Way.

I've been saying this for years. "Melodic Death Metal" is one of the most poorly named sub-genres of Metal. Back when it was coined anything with harsh vocals that didn't sound like the Norwegian Black Metal explosion that had harsh vocals was called "Death Metal." Fortunately, in recent years we were sort of given an out. When referring to bands like In Flames, Soilwork, or whatever clone of those bands you hear refer to it is "Melo-death." Then you are clearly referring to the poorly named sub-genre of Metal that has nothing to do with it's similarly named counterpart. When you say "Melodic Death Metal" make sure you are referring to bands like Intestine Baalism or Avulsed (However, at that point it's a style descriptor and not a sub-genre).

This is true, however, in many cases the history being "rewritten" was never solid except in the minds of small circles of people. Whether it's "Slayer is true DEATH METAL/BLACK METAL and Cannibal Corpse is GRINDCORE," the way the terms "Black Metal" or "Heavy Metal" in general were just thrown around arbitrarily based on interchangeable parts of the music such as lyrical content or simply to sell albums, or even Black Sabbath being a Heavy Metal band (the Ozzy-era does have a few songs that helped lay the groundwork for Traditional/Doom Metal, but that was FAR from the majority of their catalog) for every person who was alive in that era who screams their Metal I'll find you one that says they're a Hard Rock band. If you speak outside of their set mindset you are speaking blasphemy (and to some of them attacking the core of their person), but if you take the population as a whole you find that many of the statements by "revisionists" were mirrored by others at the same time. Not that I actually expect to see a little change and uniformity to discussions, hell, it's still impossible to many convince people that Venom didn't coin the term "Black Metal."

what I love about Dark Descent is also their re-releasing of old forgotten Swedish dm such as Toxaemia and Uncanny.

Anyway, check out this song, The Second Coming:

good news. Just received word that Memento Mori from Spain will be rereleasing this album later this year on cd with bonus tracks.
They will also be rereleasing Acrostichon - Engraved In Black + bonus tracks and also Delirium - Zoouuuh + plus bonus tracks.

That's great news! The Acrostichon and Delirium albums are great as well. Thanks for the heads up

Check out Torturerama - Left As Remains (demo CD/EP 2010)

This is some old-school worship!
Band hails from Belgium and offers us dirrrrrty, grrrroovy, rrrrreal death metal.
It's a self-released album so I hope they find a good label and give us some more.

maybe they should contact Dark Descent or Detest (which is Belgian I think) those two thrive on old school worship.

Sonne Adam - Transformation.

I'm just listening to some songs.... Holy fuck this stuff is nice! Nice find Marcel.

Like I said i didn't find it. Ed Warby of so many bands found it for me.

Had I know about it like two weeks ago you could have wenjoyed it last week
btw also check out Grave Miasma (they played the batcave on Friday durin Sunn O)))'s show)

After I downloaded it and listened to it a lot yesterday and today I just had to staffpick the shit out of that album.

It's only a debut, this band seems really promising! I liked the doomy vibe it had during most of the songs. Hopefully they will get some attention with the MS awards.
