have you left germany now?

no, just the "The funniest thing I encountered in Germany" sounded like you might have left, not being a pedantic or anything, just the reason i thought you might have left

Behold the latest batch of "comeback albums" - Cradle of Filth, Kataklysm, Fear Factory etc etc.

Weren't their previous albums lauded as "comebacks" or "best album since classic album X" though?!?

It's one thing I hate about a lot of metal - fanbois jumping up and down regurgitating the same tired lines about "comebacks"and "best albums" then promptly forgetting these albums as soon as the hype is gone.

If one was to take all the successive "improvements" together then surely these bands would have more than surpassed their classic albums by now?

Personally the amount of regurgitation in metal right now irritates the crap out of me. I'd rather a band do something different that I don't like than regurgitate the same old formula every 2 years.

Now for my projections as to next "comeback albums that are best since classic album X:"

Amon Amarth
Lamb of God (I'll enjoy this one but so far no indication at all it's gonna be another Sacrament or As The Palaces Burn or Ashes of the Wake - it sounds like more Resolution or Wrath)
Iron Maiden (same concept as LoG).
Soilwork
Slayer ("best album eva coz Hanneman is dead and this album is like a beautiful classic tribute" *)
Annihilator

*Ie sounds mainly like World Painted Blood and other generic Slayer but cause Hanneman is dead, it's classic Slayer. It's kinda like that overlong Batman movie with Heath Ledger. It could've been 120 minutes of Heath whacking off to goat porn and people still would've praised it cause Heath is dead.

Stuff that'll be chastised for being "crap" if it does anything different but praised if they play generic crap:

Megadeth** - for getting a country guitarist in on one track and not playing generic thrash.
Anthrax** - for not playing generic thrash .

**The metal community reserves the right to ignore the fact that these bands have not played thrash metal for about 25 years.

Though to be a hypocrite, I did find the new High On Fire to be something of a "comeback." De Vermis Mysteris was poor in song writing department and sound. Luminiferous has great songs and the sound isn't so "noisy".

Is there any point in checking out releases from genres that are over saturated, dominated by cliches and generally artistically bankrupt (ie heavy metal, power metal, thrash metal, melodic death metal and most conventional death metal)? Nearly everytime I bother, it's the same crap regardless of band or genre or mainstream v underground.

If they at least wrote good songs with a modicum of originality. But no, it's a case of "here's out best attempt at writing generic filler tracks for the most cliched album that represents the genre."

I'm finding every year is getting poorer and poorer in terms of releases (with 2012 being somewhat of an exception to the rule). 2015 is the worst year in Deadone styled metal for a long time!

(What prompted the rant were recommended albums by some MS users - one was generic third rate filler Exodus worship and the other overall boring as bat shit third rate filler Dark Tranquillity worship).

Bah - goes back to cranking 1990s shit where they weren't afraid to do that thing called "progression" and the peak of music production.

There's supposed to be a new Sound Of Thunder album in a couple of months. And The Slow Death's Ark is still my pick of the year.

Checked out Sound of Thunder's Key Of Solomon. Reasonable except for when they slow down and go completely generic e.g. The Boy Who Could Fly. The singer's voice lacks individuality though she is competent enough at what she does. There's some cool guitar riffs and passages and the singer at least isn't scared to belt it out unlike so many of the pop princesses in the genre.

A lot of these female metal vocalists lack individuality. If I want female vox, I'd rather go the pop, rock or alternative route - Lady Gaga, Fiona Apple, Dido, Adele, PJ Harvey, Babes in Toyland, Hole, Beth Orton, Baby Animals etc (and all of these don't come under my collection cause they're actually physcially separated into my wife's collection so she doesn't have to sift through all these metal CDs to find what she wants to listen to).

Most modern male metal vocalists are just as unoriginal too - we don't get many Chris Cornells, Bruce Dickinsons, Hansi Kurchs, Randy Blythes, Mikael Akerfeldts, Joey Belladonnas or Jan-Chris de Koeijer (vocalist out of Gorefest) these days.

All of their albums are like that: a mix of great and ordinary. Not too much consistency, although it still evens out to a good album.
I suggest you avoid the new Timo Tolkki album. It sounds (musically) exactly like his last 2.

Society. Countries like Switzerland have large number of guns per capita but less gun crime. The US culture has always had a predisposition towards resolving one's problems with guns.

Bare in mind though most US gun owners never harm another human being.

I think part of the problem is that they leave their guns where any nutter can get them, not locked in a safe like here.

Yeah - especially kids.

Very lenient gun laws too. I have nothing against sports shooting, ownership of firearms or collecting them, but I do think getting a gun should involve more than just picking one up at Walmart.

Someone actually got a gun licence for their 1 year old grandson (or kid, or nephew, can't remember) a few years ago. Mainly as a joke, I think, but they were surprised it actually got approved.
