Sus Mass

Apparently the site you went on likes to butcher region names. Souss-Massa is how the region's called, takes its name from the two huge oueds that make agriculture possible. Might be my favourite place in Morocco. Really a region of high contrasts, visually. The way the half-desertic plains abruptly end with the ocean <3.
And the Berbers are just so much more civilized than Arabs. And their bread is so much better.

Thanks now I'm day dreaming about taking the car and just driving down the coast with open windows and music blaring.

Is there much differentiation between Berbers and Arabs or have they interbred a lot? That part of the world confuses me. E.g were the ancient Carthaginians (themselves Phoenicians who settled in Tunisia) assimilate into the Berbers and how do Numidians fit? And how separated are Arabs and Berbers? Oh and how do the Western Saharans fit (war between Morrocco and Polisario Front is fascinating)? Are they Arabs or Berbers or something else? And then there's the Tuaregs who seem to come in both Arabic and black African varieties if National Geographic is to go by?

Is there much differentiation between Berbers and Arabs or have they interbred a lot? That part of the world confuses me. E.g were the ancient Carthaginians (themselves Phoenicians who settled in Tunisia) assimilate into the Berbers and how do Numidians fit? And how separated are Arabs and Berbers? Oh and how do the Western Saharans fit (war between Morrocco and Polisario Front is fascinating)? Are they Arabs or Berbers or something else? And then there's the Tuaregs who seem to come in both Arabic and black African varieties if National Geographic is to go by?

There is a big difference as the interbreeding didn't go too far. Berbers mostly keep away from the Arabs, as they were robbed of their land, language and religion by them. That's why a huge part of the population in the mountains and south are Berbers, they simply fled to more difficult terrain centuries ago, and many tribes stayed there. There is of course a Berber diaspora, many have come to the cities to find work, but they always somehow differentiate themselves with their entrepreneurial skills. They tend to stay independent and mostly work amongst themselves, opening shops, small businesses etc. Of course they are involved and integrated in all parts of the public life now, but just tend to keep to themselves, they don't like trouble. And of course many marry with Arabs, have Arab friends, work with Arabs etc. It's not like we all live in separately, it's just that there's a general tendency.

Only like ten years ago Amazigh Berber was recognized as an official language of the country, even though something like 20% of the population is of Amazigh Berber decent and speaks the language. The French tried to make things worse in 1930 when they wanted to divide the country between the two ethnicities by subtracting the Berbers from the general laws. It was more or less one of the rare occasions during which the whole country stood united against the colonial empire. Before that, the resistance against the French was mostly Berber, they were the ones who fought them in the Rif (North of Morocco, populated by a distinct Berber tribe, from which I take my last name and appearance) and the Atlas. Berbers have always been very proud and protective of their land, as they had to fight a succession of invaders, like the Greeks and Romans for example, and mostly the Arabs.

I won't be much help about the Numidians since there are none in Morocco from what I remember, and haven't heard much about them.

There are different tribes in the whole of Sahara as you might know, and the Sahrawi Berbers of the Western Sahara share the territory with tribes that fused with Arab Beduins like centuries ago. They are still keen on keeping the Western Sahara and their traditions for themselves, but there is no... "problem" between them and us. I mean, when you go South you are not treated differently because you come from "up there". The people have little to nothing to do with the conflict, since it's been halted for years. It's politics and diplomacy now. I think we all just do as if it doesn't exist. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to specifics as it was never taught at school, and all the information I have is what I learned from a few books that are not forbidden here and some I read in France, and from the trips I took to the South. Anything that denies Morocco's hold on the Western Sahara isn't published here. I remember when we crossed the customs between Spain and Morocco on our way back from France, my father's map was confiscated by a policeman because that publisher was known for cutting the Moroccan territory in half in all his maps.

And yes the Tuaregs are a mix of both. Many say that they result from slave trafficking, whether as slaves or slave owners, and when the trafficking stopped, there was some kind of blending of the populations of that area. They did develop their own culture though, they're very distinct from the black/berber tribes (Gnawa) that remained up north (sons of slaves etc) and were blended into the population.

I hope that helps .

Ausie one - since pub is off topic anyway so
you told somewhere that immigration and multiculturalism bringswest poor, I disagree west became poor because 3 election circles ago nationalist like lepen and reinfeld (I wonder what did Johan voted for) , they fucked up all social welfare, same time all Europe , social guaranties program was fucked, when socialists came they told its possible all., but nationalists stolled money and fixed own retirement funds, not as Janukovic and Putins people but still. Now because of them , beutty is gone, life long social guaranties and so on... WP and lepen ppl also don't like handicapped ppl, don't like help, it remainds me of Hitlers genocide. Socialsists would make better in that crises, wrong nationalist leadership ruined all, now we cant rise , we need tax up all shit to bring all back ... so its nationalsits its domestic enemy

Some way I agree social guaranties cant be paid to parasites like me (even I want be only person in planet who lives like this, others must work) , but ppl needs have some guaranties to doctor, ppl lose job, cant eb moved to fucking Goteborg if home is Pajala, it means they get paid while someone fix job there

Multiculturalism - I like it sorry man, jamacian weed and rum is better as white soviet bullshit what most of E Europians know
Grow up in one culture country, being anti soviet solder whole life, I like this idea, I like diferent cultures, people, nations, I like to see, sorry man my origin coyntry are boring, my nation and soviets to much fucking boring , since soviets speak only one lang, cant even learn lat, lit and est, Estonia, well rus vs Estonian will speak English, its huge progress
Seeing different cultures in Swe it opened my mind, so I am not rasist, I like culture... want one culture remember in dark ages Christian women wearied something like hijab, burqa ... its monoculturalism. I don't want those days back, drop religion and take culture its total diferent thing. We richen each our cultures and in some way I don't wany live in 50's USA whit white ppl, who are KKK, religuse, southern state blacl community, they had blues man , what had whites shout gun and bible? no thanks. Yoiu better take a shovel with you. You might be the person to officially uncover a chunk of Atlantis in thousands of years!

And thanks for the cultural description. We don't learn anything about that part of the world in Australia (I've met many University educated Australians who don't know where Italy is or what country Eiffel Tower and Paris are - insular bunch!) and my knowledge comes from ancient history (think Carthage and Hannibal), occassional National Geographic article and modern air combat history (with regards to Western Sahara and useage of Royal Morrocan Air Force with savage losses from Polisario SAMs)!

It's really interesting the Berbers managed to maintain their local traditions - the Arabs like the Romans had/have a tendency to absorb everyone and everything. Not surprised about the Tuareg maintaining their unique identity - many of them are quite isolated and they're fiercly independent. Current conflict in Mali was originally a Tuareg rebellion that got Islamicised after overthrow of Gaddafhi in Libya).

drop religion and take culture its total diferent thing.

Religion is part of culture, even in the West. The way people behave say in Sweden* is as much derived from Swedish Protestantism as it is from more modern secular ideas (many of which actually derive from religious people ala John Locke). Indeed Sweden's social democracy is partially rooted in mandatory church welfare - those values become engrained in society and change the way people think.

*I'll focus on Sweden as you live there.

Quote:

We richen each our cultures

No we don't. Other than different types of food and music, there isn't much benefit. I don't see how Croatian, Sudanese, Pakistani or whatever culture would enrichen Australia's mainly Anglo-Saxon cultures, unless endemic corruption, nepotism, criminalisation, terrorism, soccer hooliganism, ethnic tension, religious fundamentalism and marrying girls young as 8 and beating your wife up are considered good things.

The only people who get "enriched" by multiculturalism are the rich - large intakes of new workers keeps salaries growth low (economics 101: supply and demand). One of many reasons why income inequality has been growing rapidly since 1970s.

In essence multiculturalism is bringing back problems Western world worked hard to get rid of for centuries. E.g. they started solving the whole religious problem in 1648 at Peace of Westphalia, and worked hard at getting religion in check. Then they let a whole heap of Muslims in and the problem is back.

Or crime - e.g. Sweden had low crime, then let a whole heap of migrants in and now crime is at all time high. The main areas that have increased criminality are migrant areas like Malmo. Coincidence?

Several prominent studies have found that multiculturalism brings about distrust and even more bizarrely lower spending on public goods (e.g. roads, sewers) than homogenous populations.

Oh and the multicultural doesn't have to be as radical as Pacific Islanders moving to Greenland. Here in Australia we had similar problems with New Zealanders who are generally similar in culture and of the same ethnic group. As Balkans proves, it can be similar people with just a slightly different approach to invisible men.

Quote:

What did whites have? Classical music, folk, country, rock n roll, punk. Even heavy metal is predominantly white (albeit a large blues influence just like rock n roll). Whites also had some things ala industrial revolution, advances in medicine, the Green agricultural revolution (helping third world populations explode), liberal and social democracy etc.

You live in a world created essentially by Europeans. Sure others contributed (the Arabs for resurrecting Greek scientific concepts, Chinese for a lot of inventions), But since about 1500 the world has been modified by Europeans. Improvements in living conditions, health standards, working conditions etc etc were created by Europeans or their spawn (Americans and Australians).

Sure the Europeans did some fucked up things (everyone else does too). But overall living standards across the globe have improved due to Europeans and their inventions (be it improved agriculture or democracy or medicine or transport or whatever).

And for all the talk of rise of countries like Brazil or China or India, the ideas they're exploiting are still essentially European in origin. There's not much new discourse coming out of the rest of the world (or the West iself). The only stuff they had was the reactive failed third world nationalism which in itself was recycling of European ideas.

Quote:
Ausie culture , to be an ethnos, you need 1000 year and ausie still , same as americans are in building progress, and remember what land it was, its not like STUPID TED NUGENT, told to natives go back where you come from, what a dickhead, doesn't know history .

Australian culture exists - it's a modified British culture.

Essentially I think the so-called first world and third world are converging with the first world becoming more third world:

1. Growing poverty in West
2. Growing income inequality in West.
3. Poorer access to health services in West.
4. Poorer education due to lack of public education funding.
5. Inability of governments to raise sufficient tax revenue to fund public works due to too many tax cuts for rich.
6. Growing racial/ethnic tension due to multiculturalism.
7. Growing criminalisation due to poverty, racial tensions etc
8. Growing sectarianism and lack of unity.
9. Growth of underemployment as well as what one Indian called "timepass" - essentially meaningless employment (often with government) that generates nothingsave keep the employee in a job.

In essence I think the future of the world is cities like Kinshasa, Johannesburg or Lagos and at best places like Rio De Janeiro or Lima. The signs are already there.

the university pubs you hanged at must have been agonizing

Actually it was an assumption based on movie cliches!

Local Uni pub was mainly empty. And Uni nights held by more popular bars mainly attracted non-Uni types who wanted cheap grog.

Besides most Uni students I knew weren't really into what they were studying and thus never discussed it. This was commerce, finance, political science, history etc. Also knew a heap of education students who I guessed correctly would become rather third rate teachers ("4 x 7 = 42" and "Where Is Eiffel Tower" and "I have to get the principle in each time a child misbehaves cause I can't control them"). Even though we had probably 150 undergraduate students studying history, I was the only one in the history club (obviously all the others were postgrads).

They certainly weren't politically minded - even the local Greens association struggled to get required 10 members and only got through after a free sausage sizzle. We never even got our Liberal Party association going - only had 5 potential members. This was at a campus with some 4,000 students! Australian student activism was a trend in the late 1960s/early 1970s and was long dead by the time I got to University in late 1990s.

It doesn't help university these days is something you do to get a bit of paper to get a job. Entry requirements are low and most people aren't that into it. Most people go into university with only a third rate education behind them. Many of the students I knew didn't know how to use proper grammar or even read well.

Ity also doesn't help that you now need university to do just about anything. In the old days, you did a cadetship to become a stock broker. Now you do 3 years studying worthless theory and then need to spend another 2-3 years learning the actual job. And quality of stockbrokers isn't better because they have university degrees.

Basically in Australia, university became something to offset hte fact they don't teach anything in high school anymore.

I've met many University educated Australians who don't know where Italy is or what country Eiffel Tower and Paris are - insular bunch!

Arts degrees don't count as university education.

Before that, the resistance against the French was mostly Berber, they were the ones who fought them in the Rif (North of Morocco, populated by a distinct Berber tribe, from which I take my last name and appearance) and the Atlas.

So your a Berber, then?
