Noone has started a topic based purely on the band Death yet... They are quite simply one of the greatest bands of all time... What does everyone else think?

I used to hear this band long time ago. It was actually a great one. Leprosy is a good album to start with Death.. or it was mine at least heh. On the other hand a good one to check up is the Live in LA... all of death expressed on a concert

Leprosy is definitely a more underappreciated release.

Hey, has anyone here heard the old Mantas demos or songs from them? Those really don't seem to get much attention.

You went just a bit far with that Malphas, but i surely agree that Chuck was a master of the art. Symbolic and the Sound of perseverance just blow my mind.

Scream Bloody Gore was the first Death Metal album ever. Talk about innovation! Creating what would become metals biggest and baddest genres!

Possessed had released both Seven Churches (1985) and Beyond The Gates (1986) before Scream Bloody Gore (1987).

Not sure how the Mantas (pre-Death) demos compare to Posessed's Death Metal demo though.

Sadistik Exekution's The Magus was also supposedly recorded in 86, but not released until 90. Whether this is true is another matter.

Well obviously every single album that was made by this band was good...

But my favorite part is certainly the more technical era of death
meaning (Human) - (Symbolic) - (Individual Thought Pattern) and the all mighty and greatest of all IMO (Sound of Perseverance)
That last album by the band is probly the most brilliant work in the history of progressive death metal because of its complexity, intensity and the originality behind Chuck's compositions... This guy was a pure genius, it is sad that few people really understand the quality of this band. All these 4 albums are musts for Death Metal fans and true masterpieces.

- R . I . P Chuck -

My Favorite Songs (I recommend)

- Scavenger of Human Sorrow (Sound of Perseverance)
- Suicide Machine (Human)
- Bite the Pain (Sound of Perseverance)
- Flesh and the Power it Holds (Sound of Perseverance)
- Spirit Crusher (Sound of Perseverance)
- Crystal Mountain (Symbolic)
- Symbolic (Symbolic)
- Misanthrope (Symbolic)
- The Philosopher (Individual Thought Pattern)
- Jealousy (Individual Thought Pattern)
- Lack of Comprehension (Human)
- Zombie Ritual (Scream Bloody Gore)
- Scream Bloody Gore (Scream Bloody Gore)
- Spiritual Healing (Spiritual Healing)
- Trapped In a Corner (Individual Thought Pattern)
- Empty Words (Symbolic)

i listen in a fanatic way to Death metal and Thrash metal. when i first listened to Iron Maiden (about 7-8 years ago -i'm listening to metal about 4 years) i thought it was shit and couldnt understand anything in their music, no instrument, not even dickinson voice, it sounded like TOTAL shit on my ears. after getting used to it and liking it i listened to one song from Kreator from the mp3 of one friend of mine. it was the fastest thing i'd ever heard (i liked fast songs a lot) but i laughed very much as i also couldnt understand anything and thought that he was silly cause he listened to "not understandable" music.
now i just believe that the "few" people who'll give chances to this music are really lucky. they are not smarter, maybe just a bit more open-minded. the others just dont know... you cannot do anything about them most times. especially after an age (20-25 i think).

Please do not confuse between open-minded and accepting everything regardless of quality because [band] did it or because of a certain overdone characteristic.

I would argue that few people understand the quality of the band. Death is actually much more accessible than many other death metal bands, especially their last two or three albums.

LOL that doesn't mean that they're out of quality Pink Floyd is accessible, try saying they're out of quality !
And im sorry to say it, but apart from people that already listen to metal and actually dig up to the early Death Metal. Theres not

There are people who like Death yet don't like "early death metal" or much death at all, because of Death's progressive elements later on.

You'd be surprised. Most death metal obsessed people I know aren't that into death. They listen to them occasionally, but most people I know who listen to Death (the band) are generally prog snobs.

There might be something in your argument as I am not much into Death Metal but I like Death. Two people are not enough to make conclusions though.

But I think here is the simple truth: people who like straight Death Metal would definitely like SBG and Leprosy, less so Spiritual Healing and probably Human, and then maybe ITP. As far as Symbolic and TSOP, I am pretty sure most Death Metal fans don't really listen to those as much.

Symbolic is definitely the softest album and I sometimes doubt whether you can classify it as Death Metal whatsoever. TSOP is definitely harsher but still I am not sure whether it's Death Metal.

I love death metal, but I also love technical proggy stuff too. lol Thats probably why SBG and ITP are the albums I like best by them. The former is one the best raw, old school, death metal albums ever. And the latter is a stunning example of great musicianship, and wonderfully constructed tech-death gems. xD

"Symbolic" is their softest album, but its not that much softer than anything from "Human" onwards. "Empty Words" and "Sacred Serenity" aren't death metal at all, vocals aside. Though "Without Judgement" and especially "Misanthrope" have vicious chorus riffage. Its definitely the least death metal sounding of all their albums, but I think it's still similar enough to their 3 other tech/prog albums that it can be placed in the same genre as them.

Is it just me, or is Death rather boring? I only have Symbolic and The Sound of Perseverance, but I find that although there are many good parts on both, on the whole they sound rather uninspired and average - even though they were one of the progenitors of this style. What's wrong with me? haha
