Noone has started a topic based purely on the band Death yet... They are quite simply one of the greatest bands of all time... What does everyone else think?

It all depends on what you are looking for in music. I mean I don't look for over-the-brim brutality, so their early era (although of course not so brutal as modern DM) wouldn't appeal to me as much, but there are definitely good songs on every record they put out. Consequently, beginning with Human everything is much more interesting to me than before it, and I don't see any possibility of Symbolic and TSOP being boring. There are so many great riffs and solos, you just don't get bored, but then again it all depends on your expectations and preferences.

Sorry but i have to agree with the guys above, their earlier stuff is the best with Human being my fav album, i just love that raw old school death metal style...which is rare nowadays, for example: Obituary gets worse after Slowly We Rot and Cause Of Death too :S

I believe that death never got boring (though i dont like that much the last album and find it a bit boring -because i hate progressive) mostly because they changed their style in EVERY new album so the listener was always there to listen to something new. also they had nice solos, melodies and also heavier and darker parts and generally magnificent guitar work and they are pretty enjoyable for most people...

"Flesh and the Power it Holds" must have some of the most amazing lyrics ever, and they are sooooooo true. It's amazing how Chuck understood it and wrote a song about flesh. He was truly a man of great insight.

Is it just me, or is Death rather boring? I only have Symbolic and The Sound of Perseverance, but I find that although there are many good parts on both, on the whole they sound rather uninspired and average - even though they were one of the progenitors of this style. What's wrong with me? haha

Well you know I think its just a matter of opinion because I got both albums... and I never stopped enjoying them since day 1... Lol and personally I dont find them uninspired nor boring Im a guy who enjoy multiple sounds in the metal scene.. and to me Death did something new everytime anyways like I said its just an opinion

The fact that they constantly evolved and were one of the first tells you something, many of them stick by the original sounds. And I disagree with alot of people who only like the old sound, it's hard to say something is bland when you like just the stripped run of the mill sound that was on the first 2 albums. Yes SBG and Leporsy are good, but Symbolic is whole hell of a lot better. My favorite is Human. I'll never understand "I like it cause it's old". lol

I totally agree with you on every aspect you mentioned Human is awesome, Symbolic is better thant the first two, and a band should always try different things.

I find death to be one of my favorites and a very fun band to listen to. I don't find them boring at all, especially the solos, Death is one band that can always hold my attention through the guitar solos.

I like everything up to (and including) ITP... I dont like their last two albums that much... The musicianship is good and all but I think the last two albums are a bit overrated... just my two cents.

i agree that you can say them overrated but it is because all their albums are awesome and so the rest are underrated in comparison with the 2 last...!

Death is, by far, my favorite band. While I agree that their later stuff wasn't quite as interesting as Leprosy or SBG, it's still amazing material. Chuck was a genius, and I love how their sound changed with nearly every album.

I just can't agree with you, because i can't see Symbolic as a overrated album, but we both agree that the earlier albums are masterpieces.

That's my thoughts. I like the title track and a few other moments on Symbolic and TSoP is pretty catchy and all, but they don't impress me on the level that they seem to for many other metalheads. I like the earlier albums a lot more.

Gotta disagree, SBG is a good album lacks the maturity, adventureous song writting, harmony, complexity, etc etc. The first 2 albums are only as good as the other early DM bands albums, it's the rest that made them standout from the others.

I agree with Yasmine 100%. Especially for the time that those albums were being released. I also think later era Death is some of the greatest death metal ever written.

Death was one of the first proper extreme metal acts I was introduced to. I will always have a fondness for Individual Thought Patterns because it was the first Death album I owned. I like the band's progression. Leprosy was crushing and catchy too, but if Chuck had done that album over and over it would have gotten old. The later albums are just as great and really inspired a new generation of progressive and technical shredders.

In the favorite death album poll, I voted for Leprosy... Now I wish I could change it to TSOP. Techical, melodic, deathly, and every other posotive adjective that can be used.

Leprosy was the first Death album I ever bought...in fact it was the first death metal album I ever bought. I got it right after it came out in 1988 and I was blown away by it then. It didn't sound like anything else that I had ever heard. The only other Death album I had to compare it against at the time was Scream Bloody Gore, which I also liked, but not as much as Leprosy. Since that time I got each subsequent Death album as they were released and I have enjoyed, very much, listening to their evolution. I honestly didn't care for The Sound of Perseverance as much as the others, but it was still a good album. Actually, maybe that's what I always liked about Death...each album was a different evolutionary stage.

But my favorites are (and as far as I know always will remain) Leprosy and Human.

Oh, I don't dispute the technical superiority of either Symbolic or The Sound of Perseverance. There was a definite evolution in Death's history. My personal judgment is highly subjective. Leprosy left a deep imprint on me. I was 16 when it came out and I had never heard anything quite like it and my judgment is probably made out of my initial impression and now nostalgia. I could not judge it in hindsight because it was still all so new at the time. I saw Death twice in 1990 and that probably further cemented my feelings on their earlier work. They were great live!! As for Human...again, it's from a very subjective place. I love the feel of the album. Nothing more or less. As a matter of fact, I like it better than Leprosy.

One other thing...I agree: Symbolic > The Sound of Perseverance
