Noone has started a topic based purely on the band Death yet... They are quite simply one of the greatest bands of all time... What does everyone else think?

@ Troy

Definitely, I still think Death were at the're best when they we're playing in a more straightforward Death Metal style. This and Leprosy are Death's best albums IMO.

Agreed, they found their own sound... their own touch. Thats better than doing the same thing over and over.

Not really, it'd not that different from other early death metal, and they certainly stand out much much more later on.

Agree. Hey guys, try to search for a death metal album before 1986 that sounds like Scream Bloody Gore.

Death deserves all the recognition for their debut tbh.

Exactly. The thing with Death (more so with Mantas) is they practically fucking created the death metal genre. So it's understandable if they don't sound too far off from other releases around the same time. I mean, if I'm a musician sitting around listening to music, and all of a sudden I come across Death by Metal, I'm thinking "Holy shit, I've never heard anything like this before, but I'm definitely into it. I want more. Mantas/Death aren't just going to be the only ones to do it either. I'll form my own band and we'll play what they play."

Now it's 2011 and death metal is absolutely huge. Not that I'm judging their early works for the influence - they're great on their own merit - but you can't just say "SBG is like every other old death metal album". Such a statement reveals one's lack of knowledge on the subject of death metal if you ask me.

As for them standing out later, I think that's subjective. While objectively you can point out the songwriting prowess and the technicality and blah blah blah, objectively I can point out that Death was not a pure death metal band in the '90s and therefore the "old" and "new" eras can hardly be compared.

The first four albums are still my favorites. In all honesty, I like the vocals better and the less technical approach...and the fact that it is pure and honest death metal. And I'm telling you, when I put Leprosy in my car stereo in 1988 it kicked my ass and I loved it! As a matter of fact, I'm going to listen to the first four Death albums when I get back home.

Absolutely as was Leprosy and Spiritual Healing. People who deny that clearly weren't listening to that sort of music at the time.

advanced search for 1987 and death metal gives you this
on Metal Archives and as can be seen only a couple of death metal albums were released that year and some are totally not death metal (i.e. Sepultura, Napalm Death)

I saw Blood Feast on that list...I had completely forgotten about them.

Anyway...that's absolutely true. Besides Leprosy being the first Death album I ever heard...the first death metal shows I saw were Death (as I've posted before). I wish I had been able to catch even earlier shows...but I did see them twice when they were touring for Spiritual Healing. Great shows...especially the second one I saw. Pestilence was one of the opening bands... Anyone who caught one of those earlier Death shows saw them in their prime.

Out of curiosity...did anyone else catch a Death show from 1990 or earlier?

Im not saying it does not deserve credit omg... lol don't put words in my mouth please and calm down instead of going all mad.

Im just saying its good that they changed and did not do the same thing over and over. Yes it was their sound aswell but they experimented
alot and found something more to it, also they stood out after the tons of copy-cats created by their debuts.

People saying it isn't another early DM don't know their shit, they think album dates mean something, bands like atheist, MA and others trolled around the same area as Death for years, so no it wasn't just THEIR sound, Spiritual Healing on is THEIR sound, end of story. Guib is absolutely right, many bands are supassed by their clones, AA and Unleashed for example. There's tons of cases, and yet they survived because of progression.

No offense buddy, but I was never mad... I don't know what's "mad" to you tbh since I only used the s-word.

Not like I like to be specific about little things: I never quoted you, I never said *YOU* didn't know shit. So... No, that is not personal. If you can sue me for something is because I did a generalization about people knowing shit or not (that sounds weird)... I can say sorry for that I guess but the "being civil" I will leave aside since I'm always civil here
We can always agree that metal is cool, Death is cool... mmmkay? I even agree with you that most of the time it's good that bands do go and do the same thing over and over again. I just refuse to say that their debut wasn't their own sound and that it was just like most of the sutff at the time.

Cheers dude.

Easily my favorite death metal, no, all metal band of all time. I think Human is the best, though I honestly love all of Chuck's albums. Not a stinker in the bunch. If I was forced at knifepoint to rank the albums it would go like this:

1) Human
2) Individual Thought Patterns
3) Sound of Perseverance
4) Leprosy
5) Symbolic
6) Scream Bloody Gore
7) Spiritual Healing

Death is heavily included in my 7.5 hour death metal mix mentioned in my signature.

My personal ratings for Deaths discography would be this.

1) Leprosy
2) Scream Bloody Gore
3) Human
4) Individual Though Patterns
5) Spiritual Healing
6) Symbolic
7) The Sound of Perseverance
Deaths earlier stuff is undoubtedly the best they did IMO, Generally the more "Progressive" Death became the less I enjoyed the material.

Anyways, Death apeals to so many different people for so many reasons. They experienced different sounds. Thats probly why its one of the band that makes people argue the most Anyways we all agree on one thing. They fucking ruled.

Yes Death were indeed a good band. I would say I enjoy all their albums, SOP is undoubtedly the worst they did IMO and I have constantly gone between hating and liking the album, Nowadays id say I like it but its still easily their worst. I just prefer the raw hard hitting stuff Death did before they became progressive (Not that being progressive is a bad thing mind).

After trying soooo hard to get into them over the last 15+ years, I have given up.

I can't stand Chuck's vocals nor the sterile production on later albums. I don't mind Scream Bloody Gore in moderate doses and that's it! Even something about Leprosy doesn't sit well with me - probably the muddiness of the sound.

Very innovative band but not for Deadone!

Chuck's vocals certainly are dreadful most of the time, but I still love Death's first two albums. I do agree that the production on the later albums is horrendous, and for me, Sound of Perseverance sees Chuck's vocals at an all time low. Now that album is a real steaming pile of shit.
