From Hell , I agree, Sleepy Hollow is a thriller/fantasy whereas From Hell is just a pure thriller. They can possibly be considered as those borderline thrillers that verge on the horror. To me a movie is a horror movie if at the time of it's realise, it was seen as horror. Neither of these two were considered horror upon their release.

If it makes me shit my pants (not literally), make me wanna change the channel (even change it), or something like that, then that's a horror movie for me. But also I agree with what you say, how they were cataloged when they were released also counts big part.

I want to see the House of the Devil. It looks like one of the classic horror movies focusing on building the tension progressively instead of just throwing living dead japanese girls with down syndrome at you and the likes. It also looks like it's strongly inspired by Rosemary's Baby, I'm cool with that.

Out of the latest i've seen i really likes three,

Martyrs - french wich is like really sick but very nice also - has a deep meaning

Rec - pretty well known - made like camera on hand

and Inside (A l' interieur) - french also - sick also - without deeper meaning but keeps you hanging on

Did anyone watched Rose Red the movie it's 4 hours by Stephen King it's very interesting horror movie:)

I recommend you all to see a Spanish movie named "REC". It is a fake documentary turned "evil".

Oh yeah, There some very good spanish horror movies... This one takes the cake imo. I watched it a couple of weeks ago and damn... It was almost unbereable. One of the best things is the acting imo. They were really really good! And the end... God, that ending was insane. That..."girl", fucked up man... I was really scarred when I saw her.

The first Evil Dead... I haven't seen it some I'm really looking forward to watch it. And it is a very nice edition, naci packaning. The other one is Jekyll + Hyde from 2005, seems good but I've heard that there's way too much sex, Like, If I want to watch a lot of sex, I will watch a porn film But it seems to be a good movie anyway, let's see.

I recommend "house of voices" or "el internado St. Ange" for Spanish. Really creepy and misterious...

I haven't seen it, yet, but the recent French horror seems to be pretty promising. I was blown away by Martyrs, truly a kick in the face for me and I loved it. The scene where Anna removed the "helmet" from that tortured woman was überbrutal and the overall tension in the movie was magnificent. I'm a bit afraid now that the other French horror flicks don't match up to that one, though. Should have watched the other ones before it.
Btw, why do you mention a film if you don't wanna see it?

Another French-language film is "Calvaire"... I read the plot summary and this was enough information for me to avoid this film at all costs... it's even more sick and gross than "À l'interieur"...

I read about "Calvaire" and was quite intrigued. Also, a person with a good taste in films recommended it. I find scissors and pregnant women a bit more disturbing than some sickos in a forest

As for classic horror films, I really recommend Wicker Man (the original version) to anyone, even those who don't like horror movies. Actually there isn't much horror in it, although the final scene is a bit sinister. Instead, it has a lot of great folk songs, some naked chicks (Ingrid Pitt especially), nice acting, original plot and beautiful visuals.
The remake has some unintentional comedy value - Nicolas Cage running around in a bear costume and punching women in the face - but otherwise it's just awful.

Next pick: Let the Right One In. I am really excited about this one.

I loved when a stranger calls. Absolutely no blood or gore, but your in suspense from start to finish, and its almost unbearable. One of the only PG-13 style horrors ive ever liked.
But yeah. Dead Alive is brilliant, but not really a horror, more of a comedy.

House Of A Thousand Corpses and The Devil's Rejects

I don't know if they can classify as Horror movies but to me they were awesome oldschool style horror thrillers.The Hills Have Eyes is also good in a funny kinda way

I watched this the other day on my On Demand Free Movies and absolutely loved! No so much a horror as a splatstick. I don't know if there was more gore of more humor. It made me laugh my ass off. Fucking great! Definitely one of the best I've seen in a long time.

The original 1974 Black Christmas. The gore is very minimal, we only see a brief shot of the bloodied corpses and a killing scene where we only see shadows, the blood stained knife, all of this interjected with the singing of Christmas carols, much like the murder of Kurtz in Apocalypse Now. It's very suspenseful and has this grim mood. Realistic too.

Nah. The goriest films are probably the ones in the Guinea Pig series (especially Flower of Flesh and Blood).

I don't usually watch horror movies(except mostly for entertaining purposes). i generally dislike gory movies, my favorites are the "suspense" types, and so my favorite is Blair Witch. that movie looks so real it's no wonder some people actually thought that stuff was a real piece of footage.

I remember watching Braindead in the cinema when I was teenager, and there only being two people there aside from me.

Its not a true horror, in that its more of a really black comedy. But some of the scenes are truly disgusting. Especially the scene were bits of the woman fall into her custard. Everytime I ate for the next few weeks afterwards, I felt very nauseous if I thought of that scene. And now Ive made myself think of it again! Damn

Although I have only seen little bits of them, I know the first 2 Guinea Pig movies are more like torture films than actual horror. And when the Japanese do movies like that, they are brutal and unforgiving. Lots of people think Eli Roth invented the "torture porn" genre in movies, nope, it was the Japanese at least 2 decades before that. I definitely wouldn't be able to sit through them. lol

I'm probably in that massive minority who still thinks Blair Witch is the closest films have got to true horror. Purely because it relies on the viewer's imagination rather than on screen effects and monsters etc. If you don't find it scary then that's probably because Hollywood monster/slasher films have destroyed your imagination ^^ Paranormal Activity was also a good example of that kind of film, and another that tends to split opinions drastically.

[REC] is probably my favourite shaky-cam horror, particularly the last 20 mins or so.

The Thing and Descent are probably my favourite standard visual horror films, I really like the isolationist locations and also the mono-sexual casts of each. They both just kick ass.

Most genuinely scary films though are ones that aren't classed as horror. The scene in Lost Highway with the phone conversation and subsequent return to the house (even though nothing is found) ranks amongst the all time freakiest moments

yup, from what i've seen the horror genre is the one you have to sift through the commercial shit the most in order to get to the really good stuff. almost all horror movies that get shown at the cinema suck so badly, culminating in one of the top 3 worst movies i've ever seen, The Midnight Meat Train(still doesn't top Meet The Spartans but that's another topic). it's incredible how some people actually pay so much money to see such shit.

i love how Blair Witch doesn't have any gore at all but the whole "action" is inside your head, i genuinely felt quite scared when i watched it. the suspense is great, and i LOVE how low-budget and REAL it all looks. those guys drink liquor and smoke weed in the beginning, then they try to sort out the situation even though it consistently gets more and more fucked up. they just behave so naturally that, apart from the ending, if i didn't know it was actually shot professionally, i would have thought that shit was real.


another good horror movie imo, with a good balance of scary-fucked up was The Exorcist. it wasn't too scary apart from a few scenes (like when he finds the statue or when the woman is searching the attic) its strength was that it was quite an extreme movie, definitely not for anyone with even a slight hint of Christianity in them, and i'm not talking about gore here, but about the general offensive-repulsive-factor. i remember people were raving that Passion of the Christ was an extreme movie and that people were crying and running out of cinemas, fuck, Passion of the Christ is NOTHING compared to this.

Well that's just it, it doesn't take a genius to realise that to make an effective horror film you need to make it as close to reality as possible. The moment you start using high production values, snazzy camera work, high contrast post-production effects and of course, a cast that consists entirely of stupidly good looking dumb-ass teenagers it's all going to take away from any real sense of reality. And like you I also don't get how they churn out endless films like the ones you mentioned. I think people like "shock" films with murderers that appear behind fridges or in mirrors. People are morons. Films with real tension are annoyingly rare.

If I saw a film called Midnight Meat Train I would assume it's a porn flick haha!

The Exorcist is just a great film through and through. I didn't like it when I was younger but I really appreciate it these days.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre, along with The Exorcist, were kind of "legendary" films when I was growing up where in school how gross and shocking they were would get exaggerated by everyone and then when we'd finally come to watch it it would be a bit underwhelming. Again like The Exorcist I like it more these days than when I was younger. I recall there was a lot of screaming and running around being chased by inbreds with chainsaws.

Is that hammer bit the bit where the person he hits starts convulsing and twitching on the floor? Or am I thinking about something else?

Oh! And Eden Lake! Fuck, that film will probably only be scary to people from the UK who have an understanding of chav culture and continuing persecution we alternative lot face on a day to day basis. Makes me not want to leave the house.
