I know there are a lot of Helloween fans here. They're probably my absolute favourite power metal band of all time. I love how they can produce the serious songs and then make songs such as 'Perfect Gentleman'. Like most fans, I perfer the Kiske/Hansen albums to the more recent ones. I think Deris' voice is more suited for a heavy metal band TBH. Though it is still enjoyable to listen to him.

What are your thoughts on this band?

There has never been another band whose catalogue of albums are a rollercoaster of quality. Honestly, practically every other album they did is pure crap, but there are some really great ones. Walls of Jericho is a very solid effort and definately teh best of thier "classic" years. Both Keepers are hugely overrated and made an entire genre of pansies and tree huggers, complete reversal of lyrical subjects from Walls of Jericho, mind you. Something must have happened.

Pink Bubbles is pretty weak, although some really good songs are to be found, a lot of variety too, but not really organized. Thier best by far is Chameleon, and I'm serious here, I'll make an in deph review sometime, but just nothing touches the variety and fun of the whole album.

Everything with Andi Deris is pretty lackluster except for Better Than Raw, which some can argue is thier best, which is really right up there with Chameleon. Better Than Raw contains some of the best productions in a metal album ever. Dark Ride is just pretentious and flat out bad. One of the worst albums of all time for sure, nothing on it is worthwhile except for Mr Torture, which is actually a great song. From being harshly overproduced and horrbily marketed as a "dark" album, oh yea, Deris sings low sometimes, big deal. I heard a lot of peole messed with the album. Changing the production and sound of it all the time, it certainly shows too. Rabbit Don't Come Easy is okay, and I won't even hear the new Keepers.

Overall, they are a good band, each albums has atleast a few kick ass songs, so they're not really that bad.

Fellini Wizard: why arent you going to give the new album a go? who knows, you might like it!
its weird that you prefer their albums that the masses don really like at all
i love 'Chameleon' as well, but i like all of their albums a lot
least favorite in my opinion is probably 'Better Than Raw' even though i do still like it - i dont just feel it to be a consistant album

really though - you should listen to the new album. you probably wont like some tracks, but you might really like some others. it is a long album, there will be some material on there you like

I've heard a few songs actually, it sounds like Rabbit Don't Easy a lot I think, just with a lot of synths. It just sounds very rushed and half assed so far. The lowest I have heard from the band possibly. But I did say just about every album has a few really kick ass songs. I forgot to mention Master of The Rings, that's a pretty cool album too, but half of the album isn't all that good.

I love Helloween, and after seeing that set list,I have for so long wanted to hear Andi doing I Want Out, I was bummed when they didnt do it on High Live. They are my third favorite band behind Iron Maiden and Stratovarius. I own almost all of their albums including the Keeper albums, which I think are absolutely essential to anyone who considers themselves a power metal fan or maybe even a metal head in general. Helloween kick ass and will kick ass for many years to come.

What I liked:

Helloween - Walls of Jericho -- Absolutely mindblowing. Despite the horrid quality this album has (production wise), it was so original at the time, and so furious. The solo's and everything are just outstanding even to today's matured bands.
Keeper Albums -- I love them to death, but they should never overshadow Walls of Jericho.
Pink Bubbles -- Not as bad as I was expecting, but definitely way too different from them. Medicore at best.
Time of the Oath, Master of the Rings, Darkride, and Better than Raw are so far the only Deris-Saga albums I've liked from them. I'm not a huge fan of Deris honestly, his voice just doesn't seem to be very tough compared to some other vocalists with more of a texture to their voice. But I don't hate him.

Definitely, a legendary band. But overall I prefer ... Gamma Ray.

read this reply from Michael Kiske in regard to the acoustic Helloween songs he will be doing:

(original message)

Deborah:

Hi Michael,

In these days I was reading some Italian Webzines, and someone has posted a new about your acoustic project, and believe me... I'm still angry after hours and hours!
Many persons (the major part) used to blame and critic you in every ways possibles, people who say: "Mr.Kiske You used to eat from Helloween's songs, then you criticized them and metal music, and now you want to record Helloween's songs and go to EAT again from them?"

(and his reply)

Michael Kiske: Don't worry. I don't give a hack about this! Unfortunately the metal-world is full of people who bark and complain and bark and complain forever
anyway, no matter what I do. They will always search for reasons to cry.

I was part of that band; so I didn't just ''EAT'' from them - that's a very weird way of thinking - I was BUILDING the band together with the original members; and no one can forbid me to re-record acoustic-version of MY OWN music. I don't think I have to ask "metal-popes" for their permission to do that at all. Those are MY songs; If I feel like doing this, I do it anyway!

The good first Helloween years (with Kai Hansen) were also absolutely great; I don't reject them at all! And I think it was a good idea from Serafino (Frontiers-Records) to give my songs of the past a new acoustic-sound that fits me today. Because on one hand this shows that I don't reject my past; and on the other hand it can also give some (more open and intelligent) people another perspective at those songs. And if anyone doesn't like that idea: no one forces him or her to listen to it! These new recordings will NOT AT ALL sound like Helloween or Metal; so it is VERY stupid to put it the way some do. I have already started to go through some arrangements, and it's big fun; I'm really excited about it. Those early songs of mine were not so bad at all, and they work great as acoustics. -

Unfortunately, Deborah, metal these days means a lot of negativity, dogmatism and art-enemy-mentalities. They really believe THEY have to tell musicians what they are ''allowed'' to do or not (as you can see again). And they can also only look at everything from a negative and destructive angle; they will always put everything in a way so they can slander around about it. They just can't help it! And a lot of them don't even understand what I am talking about, when I'm explaining my ways of thinking. They also intentionally mix things up which are separate issues. I don't really say anything bad about Helloween. I had my problems with one particular person in there, and sometimes I have to defend myself a bit because of things this
particular person (successfully) likes to spread about me, but I enjoyed the first years a lot! The reason for this hatred is that I name what is wrong and sick about today's heavy-metal-scene; and THAT'S really what many are so pissed about! The metal-spirit tries to dictate laws for thinking and music, and if you don't follow those laws, you ''betray'' them. But that spirit IS a pure betrayal of freedom in itself. So to be true to yourself, you've got to ''betray'' that dogmatism sooner or later.

This is actually a big part of WHY I can't stand this scene anymore. They can't handle someone like me anyway. I disagree with the typical metal-ideologies in so many ways, and I'm not afraid to speak my mind about it; and that's enough for many to go against someone like me. They simply don't LIKE how I think, Deborah, so they will always find reasons to talk dirty against me. Who cares! -

But I'm always newly surprised again about the reactions of certain smart-asses there; about what they cherish and what they condemn. I can't see at all where my ''crime'' is supposed to be here? I thought (think) this acoustic-album of my past is a nice idea, which should cause some excitement and maybe even some peace, but many minds obviously function in different ways. But they won't have any effect on what I am doing anyway; that's for sure; I won't allow that. And my friends are going to enjoy this. -

I am slowly building my own fan-base now; and I don't really need to know about all the nonsense certain jerks like to spread about me. They can fuck-off! And you shouldn't let this get to you either, Deborah. Believe me: it ain't worth it!

I'm trying to lead a pretty clean live, I'm not a perfect man, but I'm always straight forward and honest; so who are those a-holes to teach me morals?! ... They certainly don't stand for MY morals!
