"Batshit insanity." No year in metal is complete without at least one album that can justify that description in one way or another. While maybe not as great as say, Smohalla's Resilience or Lurk's self-titled debut when it comes to lunacy, Ordinance really deserve a few points for coming pretty damn close.

Relinquishment is an amalgam of basically three different black metal sounds; the chaotic, yet somewhat accessible sound of recent Deathspell Omega, the vocals and more chaotic delivery from the last two Mayhem albums, with some newer Marduk interspersed. It's an album of huge scope that drifts through moments of avantgarde bizarreness, post-metal melancholy, and traditional black metal fury. Depth is added through fine attention to detail and unpredictable structure: Acoustic guitars will come forward during the most furious moments, distant chanting background vocals give a tangible, eerie feel to the already creepy Attila Csihar-like lead vocals, and abrupt shifts in mood will leave you guessing where the Relinquishment is going to go next.

"Man fears only what he does not understand." That theory really encapsulates the main issue with Relinquishment. At face value, it is a chaotic, frightening piece of work. While the structure may be unpredictable, Ordinance play a variety of already familiar sounds, unfortunately making the album familiar and comfortable. If bands like Mayhem, Marduk and Deathspell Omega didn't already exist, this album would be a hell of a lot more powerful.

While maybe not "out there" enough to warrant letting out a Downtown Clay Davis "sheeeeee-it!", Relinquishment is deep, detailed and bizarre enough to make it to at least the top ten of your yearly "creepy shit" list.

Note: Since Ordinance don't seem to believe in the internet, here is most likely your best place to hear this wonderful little album.
