Forgotten Tomb is a pretty easy band to nail musically. Whether it's their early-Katatonia era worship or the more recent ones which bring some rocking attitude to melodic black metal, and I really like them both even if they're not extremely original.

Hurt Yourself And The Ones You Love sort of follows where they left off with ...And Don't Deliver Us From Evil, with a bit of evolution in terms of sound. The depressive tone is still there, but sort of further buried underneath the façade of an uncaring image, which is a bit like how some depressed people act when they put up a cool / cheery front while their insides are in turmoil. The rockability of the songs are intact as well. What has changed the most is the black metal parts, as it's become a complementary part of the music instead of the core, resulting in a mostly mid-paced blackened gothic metal album.

I'm always happy when a band tries to evolve their sound, and the direction Forgotten Tomb has taken is genuinely a positive step as it helps them further develop their own identity. Can't imagine the band itself being satisfied with the "perfect early-Katatonia clone" label, no matter how difficult it is to achieve that to begin with, right? However, even with the right direction, success is not guaranteed because the execution feels lacking. The band is well established, so I have no complaints in terms of performance, but apart from the first two tracks, the rest of the songs definitely feel that they have dragged on for too long and have overstayed their welcome. Longer tracks are generally not a problem, but the band should at least shoulder 60% of the burden of keeping my attention, and being too repetitive isn't the right way to do it, especially as the band's sound is now more firmly in gothic metal territory. It's not like I had completely fallen asleep, but being aware of the drag can't be a good sign, and it might have to do with the fact that I was expecting that killer climax that never came.

Perhaps next time they'd do better by condensing their musical ideas a bit, though for now, I'll chalk this up as a process of growth and that they have yet to realise their full potentials.

The only thing I heard from this band was the debut and Springtime Depression. I'm not sure about the quality of the rest of their stuff, but this review makes me think that it can't be that bad.

Also, that cover is horrible, I already hate piercings and tattos. And the girl (or boy?) has both. Disgusting for my wonderful and pure eyes.
