Burzum - New Album Details

Official press release

It's been 11 long years and now the world will see the return of Burzum. The highly anticipated new album is entitled Belus after the name of the ancient European solar deity of light and innocence. Belus is not a religious album or an anti-religious album, nor is it a political one, but an attempt to explore the myths about Belus and unveil the oldest roots of our cultural heritage. The album deals with the death of Belus, his sombre journey through the realm of death and his magnificent return. In essence the album and the story of Belus is meant to be an entertaining story about something that once upon a time played a major role in the forming and shaping of Europe.

Varg Vikernes explains: "The album has been made according to my heart and spirit, and not to fit into any particular genre or category, or to live up to anyone's obvious expectations". The music can best be compared to the music of some of the old Burzum albums; in particular the ground breaking Hvis Lyset Tar Oss and the atmospheric brilliances of Filosofem, only the ambient parts present on these albums has been almost completely left out on Belus. "There is no special reason for this, other than coincidence and the fact that I have for some time made more and better music on the guitar rather than on the keyboard".

"Inspiration for the album has come from a variety of sources, and I find my inspiration from fairy tales and myths, from classical music, from memories of what once was, from traditional music, from fantasy, from the wind and weather, from deep forests and running water, from the sky and the sunset, from misty mountains and from yellow leaves falling from age old trees".

"My ambition with Belus is to create something I - and hopefully others too - can listen to for years and years to come without ever growing tired of it, and at the same time to share with my audience the experience of getting to know Belus, as he might have been perceived by the ancient Europeans". The combination of lyrics and music makes this a fairy tale different from most others, and should appeal to all those who like transcendental music and love to see different things from a different perspective. "If I can make you dream when listening to this album, I believe I have done a good job".

"I am aware of the black metal association with the name Burzum, and I have no real and serious problem with that, but I personally see no reason to place Belus in any category. I think Belus musically transcends all existing categories, but if I have to choose one - and for the sake of simplicity - I will simply place it in the metal category".

Secret Sphere - Working On New Album

Italian power metallers Secret Sphere entered the new Authoma Studios on December 6 to begin recording their sixth album, Archetype. The band will spend two months working on the CD, which is being produced by guitarist Aldo Lonobile and Federico Pennazzato. The album will be mastered at Massive Arts Studio, while the artwork will be handled by Gustavo Savez.

Guitarist Aldo Lonobile comments: "The musical direction will keep strongly the Secret Sphere trademark, with lots of melodies, orchestration and heavy riffs and great solos. It's not a big departure from what we have done in the past, but we feel that we've integrated some new elements that enhance upon everything we've ever done, making this one of our (if not the) strongest albums to date. Some of the songtitles are "Mr. Sin", "All In A Moment" and "The Scars That You Can't See". We're ready to deliver a great album, and show you what our new members Marco Pastorino and Gabriele Ciaccia can bring to our music."

Salem - Sign With Pulverised Records

Official press release

Salem, the legendary and most enduring Israeli Extreme Metal band in Israel's rock/metal history ever, has now officially joined the ranks of Pulverised Records.

Salem achieved international success throughout the years with their consistency in belting out albums and has remained one of the hardest working bands coming from Israel, with each new album more powerful and stronger than the previous.

Some of the highlights of their career include the Colin Richardson-produced album A Moment Of Silence that was released in 1998 and more recently, appearing on main stage at the prestigious Hellfest Festival in 2007, alongside bands such as Machine Head, Slayer, Blind Guardian, Within Temptation, etc.

Salem's latest and 7th full-length album will be aptly entitled Playing God And Other Short Stories, with the band now deep in the midst of the mixing process.

Israel's premier metal act Salem, who recently left Season Of Mist, released the following statement to the local and international press: "We are thrilled to join the Pulverised team. The label is very attentive to our needs and puts us as a top priority act. It is something we have been yearning for years. We feel confident that together we can achieve goals that have alluded us in the past few years. The band's 7th album Playing God... is scheduled to be released mid 2010 and will include 12 scorching new tracks from the band, one of which is the head-turning cover of Bob Marley's "Exodus".

Comments Pulverised Records A&R Manager Calvin: "Personally, I have been a Salem fan for a good number of years and this is definitely a dream coming true, to be able to work hand-in-hand with one of my favourite bands. The Salem guys are all about pure dedication, as well as very meticulous and professional in every aspect. We are very anxious to see what new grounds Salem will break this time with the new album!"

Salem recently took a brand new promo photo-shoot in conjunction with the concept of the upcoming album Playing God And Other Short Stories, with the entire band donning 'superhero costumes'.

Salem skinsman Nir Nakav explained: The opening track on the new album, "Drums of the Dead" is inspired by a Hellboy graphic story by the same name. It is the first time that Abe Sapien goes on a solo mission and in the promo picture I am wearing a shirt that carries the insignia of his bureau. Remaining true to form, the other guys in the band took on characters that "Play God"; Superman with his ability to reverse time (that is why he can be seen in 3 different places at the same time on the promo shot) and the Punisher who kills evildoers.

Circle II Circle - Part Ways With Drummer And Guitarist

Circle II Circle have made a couple of changes in their line-up. Here's the official word:

"A couple of months ago, we parted ways with drummer Tom Drennan. We love Tom and wish him nothing but happiness and success in his future. Filling the spot is Johnny Osborn (X-Thirtien / Dr Butcher). Also included in the line-up change is the decision to go 4 members instead of 5. Guitarist Bill Hudson (ex-Cellador, ex-Power Quest) is no longer with us. He is pursuing his own band, Written In Blood, which is an amazing band! Be on the lookout for them. There have been rumors of a new guitarist. That is what they are... Rumors. We are happily moving forward as a 4 piece and wish Tom and Bill much luck in their future endeavors."

Katagory V - Change Guitarist, Album Update

Bassist Dustin Mitchell has issued the following update on behalf of Katagory V:

"It is with regret that I have to announce the departure of guitarist Darrin Goodman. Shortly after completing our pre-production sessions, Darrin had decided that due to personal obligations outside of the band, that it would be both in his and the bands best interest to leave Katagory V. We would like to wish him luck in his future endeavors. Rest assured this slight personnel change will not undermine the bands current progress. Returning to Katagory V to help with the live aspect of the band, as well as possibly participating on the new album, is former guitarist Marc Hanson, who appeared on the bands last two efforts The Rising Anger and Hymns of Dissension. Marc and I got together recently and talked about Katagory V past and present and enjoyed a bit of nostalgia, jammed a few riffs ideas and old songs, and then I let him listen to the new Katagory V material. It was at this point that he expressed extreme interest in participating in Katagory V once again. Although Marc's current band SuperSoFar (which also featured Jonni Lightfoot of Starbreaker) keeps him rather busy; he has decided the time is right, and agreed to come back to Katagory V and shred once again! The guitar chemistry between Marc and Kris (Krompel) is absolutely amazing, and is sure to bring the live aspect of the band up several notches.

I'm sure it is becoming very cumbersome and frustrating for everyone out there, especially for myself, being that there is still no new material on display or even a new album after two years, and the revolving door of guitarists seems to keep spinning and hindering the progress. However, that is not the case now. Pre-production is in fact complete, we will be playing live at the beginning of the year, we will start tracking the new album in March 2010, and... we will be uploading and posting clips of new Katagory V songs, as well as revealing the title of the new album in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!"

Kataklysm - Working On New Material

Kataklysm are in full writing mode at the moment for the follow-up to the Prevail album. The band have also confirmed the mixing duties for the next offering.

Guitarist Jean-François Dagenais comments: "I'm really excited to be deep into the writing process for the new Kataklysm album, the band is more focused than ever. This album will be different from Prevail, but will still have the classic Kataklysm trademarks and hooks. You will see a much more intricate record than we've done in the past. It will contain some really fast and dynamic parts, but we will also aim for a very melodic driven record and it will contain lots of technical parts as well that we haven't explored much lately. And no worries, the bone crushing grooves are always a must with Kataklysm and will be present. I've also seen Maurizio's lyrics for this album so far and let me tell you that they hit really hard. I know it's a very personal album to him as he is going through some tough times in his personal life. So I'm not worried about what he will bring to this record, so expect a very real, aggressive and determined Kataklysm album! We know we have set the bar high for ourselves, but we are confident to deliver the goods once again. On the production end I will handle the recording as usual, but for the mix we have decided to enlist Tue Madsen from Denmark. We feel he captured best the band's sound on In the Arms of Devastation. We feel it's a winning team and we're gonna make sure you have the best sounding record to date."

The album is scheduled for release in late summer/early fall 2010, and vocalist Maurizio Iacono will reveal the new album title on Christmas Day on the band's MySpace page.

Power metallers Kamelot have issued the following update:

"As Kamelot's concert schedule grows and commitments increase the demand on its members has also increased. Kamelot's guitarist Thomas Youngblood states "Glenn called me a few weeks ago and told me he just couldn't do it anymore, and has to step aside. He is like a brother to us and we've been through a lot of great times, so we wanted him to make this decision."

Bassist Sean Tibbetts has been on tour with Kamelot now for more than 2.5 years, stepping in for Glenn Barry while he took time off for family. We are very pleased to announce Sean Tibbetts as the new Kamelot bassist!"

The Old Dead Tree - Call It Quits

Season Of Mist press release

We are sorry to announce French goth metallers The Old Dead Tree decided to call it quits. Here is frontman Manuel's official statement:

"The Old Dead Tree is no more.

I wish I never had to write those words, but nothing is forever. These last few months, some disagreements started to grow within the band, regarding commitment and musical direction in the making of our fourth album. Those differences of opinions soon turned out to be a dead-end problem and led me to make the decision of ending the band's activities.

In twelve years of existence, The Old Dead Tree had its share of line-up changes. Of course, each of them has been an improvement, but they were also painful losses. And I do not want to face that kind of loss again. Be that as it may, I am still extremely proud of the work we have achieved and I want to thank all the people without whom nothing would have been possible: past and present band members with whom I learnt so much and had amazing times, our wonderful crew, our label Season of Mist, our tour booker K Productions, and especially the fans who supported us and encouraged us to go forwards. I wish them all the best in their future endeavours. This is now farewell."

Season of Mist thanks The Old Dead Tree for having created three great albums and wish its members good luck for the future. So long, guys!

Gloria Morti - Recording New Album, Keyboard Player Leaves

Finnish Melodic Black metallers Gloria Morti have issued the following update:

"Gloria Morti is entering studio to record their third full length album. The recordings of the album will be carried out in the same fashion as the last album Eryx by Juho Räihä in SoundSpiral studios. The recordings will start on November 21th. We will have a studio diary online and we will keep you up to date. The working title of the album is Anthems Of Annihilation and it will contain ten tracks of the most diverse and crushing Gloria Morti material to date.

Anthems Of Annihilation is a concept album about mankind making an irreversible mistake in trying to overcome all of its biggest problems. The storyline borders from a war between men and machines to the slavery and exploitation of a whole generation. The lyrical theme takes a stance on current problems and is a reminder of the stupidity of man.

Some working titles of the tracks:

"The Solution Called War"
"Awakening Of A Discordant Machine"
"Infiltration"
"Swallowed By Defeat"
"Obey"

Jenni Kemppainen is no longer a part of Gloria Morti. Keyboard arrangements on Anthems Of Annihilation will be written and performed by our long time friend Lars Eikind (Before The Dawn / Producer on Lifestream Corrosion, additional keyboard arrangements on Eryx).

Expect fast blast beats, flesh ripping melodies and huge soundscapes."
