This band needs no introduction.

To start things off, what do people think of Vargs' writings about paganism that are posted on his website ((www.burzum.org)?

Possibly the last metal-Burzum track.

"I no longer play metal music" / "Today (2013) I think I am done playing metal music for good." / "So, just like I started out I will finish metal-Burzum with a guitars-and-bass-only track in rehearsal quality. "Back to the Shadows" is made up of the last metal riffs I ever made (in 2012)."

Well that's pretty representative of the quality of metal he puts out today, so probably for the best it's the last.

People are surprised about this? Burzum stopped making Black Metal long time ago, and he went into Skaldic Metal or whatever later on, and now he is returning to the old form. I still have more respect for him than most of these so called BM bands today.

Well, I think it's made of the the very core Burzum melodies, used in both old and new albums. Not a fabulous track, but a cool farewell.

The other guy: Belus & Fallen + re-recorded album

Best thing about it is he'll finally stop churning out uninspired metal albums every year. If we're unlucky, he'll start doing the same with ambient stuff.

this indeed sounds like a farewell track ...

I think it is the right time for it. I didn't mind his Ambient albums, so if that is what he wants, more power to him.

For those interested, here's a few ambient tracks which were not on the album:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASefHYjXx98 | I'd say theme ("From ForeBears" might be the proper title)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_HAsDxvg6o | Han Som Reiste, new film version
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4ZVZOIRhRI | Sounds like a proto of some other track, not sure if it's called "Divine Light".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBWey5s_4Dw | And that

By "re-recorded version", do you mean Aske EP version or 2011 version from the re-record 'compilation'. Or some rare version?

The Aske version.

Well, Samoth (Emperor etc.) plays bass on the Aske version. I'll spin both versions now anyway. I'll report something back, possibly.

The Aske version is:
- about a minute longer
- guitar sound is more 'freezing' and 'bee', and transcendental
- less echoing drums, i think some changes in the drumming as well
- warmer bass, and clearer
- more stable and 'organized', less necro
- varg's voice is a bit more 'normal', this is less Varg + music, this is more music with a bit insane vocals
- the midpart sounds slower and more drowning
- some changes in the 'post-bridge' too, if it makes any sense as a term
- recorded eight months later than the original version, same producer and studio though (Pytten, Grieghallen)

Damn, I was looking into the 2010 reissue of the Burzum/Aske compilation, which means the featured version of A Lost Forgotten Sad Spirit is the very same of the debut. Still, thank you very much for the report

No problem.

Just to make it clearer, I think it's like this:

Burzum: Original version
Aske: Samoth version
Burzum/Aske (original): Samoth version
Burzum/Aske (after jail version): Both versions

Yeah, right. Also this Burzum/Aske 2010 reissue is the first time the debut was "fully" released on CD.

Well it (Burzum - Burzum) was released by Deathlike Silence Productions, so I'm not sure what you mean.

There were some CD versions too, this for example: http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?release=413444

It might be that the LPs and CDs weren't released simultaneously, but close enough anyway. Worldwide? Only if underground fanzines' distribution and other contacts were worldwide.

Watched it yesterday too, and couldn't help myself laughing a bit when the first thing Varg does is tell all over again his side of the Euronymous murder as if he was still trying to convince someone he was inocent

Hmmmmm otherwise, well not much to say. Basically him and his wife telling their side of the story when they recently got arrested. Which isn't a bad thing considering how clumsy the autorities were. The "survival" part at the end was quite fun and interesting.
